DiCaprio will be producing and financing the animated movie Akira, in association with Warner Bros. The Hollywood Reporter stated that Akira is an animated film by Katsuhiro Otomo based on his manga.
The film takes place in 2019, in a futuristic time following a nuclear war. A teenager who is the target of governmental experiments, finds himself with new powers. It will take place in Manhattan, a city rebuilt with the help of the Japanese.
The remake of Akira will be in theatres in the summer of 2009.
