People reported that Madonna hosted the event and invited many celebrities to raise money for UNICEF and her own foundation Raising Malawi. Madonna has a two-year-old, David, whom she adopted from this African country. The event took place in New York City and was sponsored by Gucci.
Madonna stated, "I am grateful that Gucci has underwritten this event, that’s all that matters to me – their generosity."
The star added, "I want to put Raising Malawi on the map. I want credibility as a philanthropic organisation. I want to inspire people. I don’t want them to just write me a cheque – I want them to give me a piece of their heart."
