A Dark Mood for the Next Almodovar Film

Oscar-winning Spanish director Pedro Almodovar took inspiration from American film noir for Los abrazos rotos.

The director will again be working with his eternal accomplice, Penelope Cruz.  Blanca Portillo and Lluis Homar will also star in the project.

Almodovar, 56, wrote the film as a four-way tale of love, in the spirit of the 1950s American films noir.

Los abrazos rotos takes place in the present day, but makes stylistic references to Nicholas Ray’s In a Lonely Place and Vincente Minnelli’s The Bad and the Beautiful.  The film will explore the themes of fate, the mystery of creation, guilt, power, and the search of fathers and sons.

Production for the film, that has a budget of $15 million, will begin in Madrid in the spring.  Almodovar says that he is completing the screenplay, and that the project is, "like some of my other films — ‘Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown’ — this film came easily, in one go".
