Potente will play Johanna von Ingelheim, a 9th century German woman, who disguises herself as a man and climbs through the ranks of the Vatican.
Volker Schloendorff (The Tin Drum) will direct. Filming is set to begin in May. Potente is best known for her work in Run Lola Run and The Bourne Identity.
