George Clooney To Direct Leatherheads

George Clooney will direct and star in the football film Leatherheads.

According to Variety, Universal Pictures has chosen Clooney to direct the film.  Actress Renee Zellweger is currently in talks to play the female lead in the project.

Leatherheads is the story of a professional football player in the 1920s.  At the moment, Clooney is working on the script, and hopes to begin filming in 2007.  Clooney’s production company Smoke House Productions is also part of the team.

Different versions of the film have been circulating for ten years.  The plot follows an aging football player who urges a young college star to drop out and join a professional league.

Clooney, 45, will be working again under the direction of Steven Soderbergh in his next film, Out of Sight.
