The star of the television series Lizzie McGuire has been dating Madden since June, 2005. Joel Madden is a member of the rock band Good Charlotte. Duff, who starred in Cheaper by the Dozen, has made some compromises to accomodate her boyfriend’s lifestyle.
Madden, who has been sober for two years, normally likes to stay home, while Duff, 18, likes to party a bit. Duff said of their arrangement, "I can’t say I’m never going to drink for the rest of my life – I wouldn’t want to make that decision. He has to – and he’s really adjusted. Sometimes I’m the one who’s like: ‘Let’s go out! Let’s go out!’ and he’s like: ‘No, I don’t want to. Let’s stay in.’ I think that the way people think his personality should be is more like mine. It’s like we’re reversed!"
