Monica Bellucci to Play Sonia Gandhi

Italian actress Monica Bellucci will play politician Sonia Gandhi on the silver screen.

The actress, who was recently a judge at the Cannes Film Festival, has agreed to work with filmmaker Jagmohan Mundhra to play the daughter-in-law of the fomer Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Bellucci (The Passion of the Christ, The Matrix Reloaded, Irreversible) will begin working on the film soon.  The project will be shot on location in London, Italy and India.

The biographic movie will recount the story of the life of Sonia Gandhi, who was born in Italy.  In 1968 she returned to India, eventually marrying Rajiv Gandhi, the son the the country’s Prime Minister.  In 1984, her famous mother-in-law was assasinated.  In 1991 her husband was killed in a suicide bombing, and now she is the Prime Minister.
