McKellen and Molina in The Da Vinci Code

Sony Pictures Entertainment has signed Ian McKellen and Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2) to play in The Da Vinci Code.

Ron Howard will direct the film which is an adaptation from the best-selling novel by Dan Brown.

Molina will play a zealous Bishop Arigarosa, who is interested in the sleuthing activities of Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and of cryptographer Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou).  McKellen will play Sir Teabing, a wealthy man who finances Langdon’s research efforts, and who also hopes to uncover the mystery.

The movie will also star French actor Jean Reno.  Filming is set to begin in June, and should reach theatres by May 19, 2006.
