The idea of sending Christian Dvorak to Columbus is gaining ground in Montreal

Needless to say, the NHL is officially into the off-season, even though the Stanley Cup has yet to be won?

Pierre-Luc Dubois vs Darcy Kuemper… Ty Dellandrea… Jacob Markstrom… Barclay Goodrow…

Aside from the Oilers and Panthers, we’re all already looking ahead to the 2024-25 NHL season. The amateur draft opens in eight days’ time, and it’s usually around this time that GMs and hockey presidents experience their biggest rush of the year on the Bettman circuit.

It’s crazy to think that the Oilers don’t even know who the GM will be right now. #Holland #EndOfContract

Yesterday, we saw the Capitals get their hands on a very bad contract (seven seasons at $8.5 million annually)… by letting go of a goalie who was a little overpaid (three seasons at $5.25 million annually). After all, Charlie Lindgren is currently the Caps’ #1 goalie…

This transaction gave TheAthletic’s Arpon Basu some ideas. Actually, no, Arpon Basu launched a hypothesis on June 17 during The Basu & Godin Notebookpodcast… a hypothesis that makes perfect sense since yesterday’s transaction. Thumbs up to Marco Normandin for making the connection between Basu’s proposal and the Pierre-Luc Dubois deal.

We all know that Patrik Laine has expressed a desire to leave Columbus, and even though he’s slowed down recently, the Finnish forward ticks all the boxes on Kent Hughes’ form.

Often, teams who want to get rid of a big contract have to agree to acquire a smaller one. Kuemper for Dubois…

According to Basu, Kent Hughes could try to get Laine by asking the Blue Jackets to take Christian Dvorak’s contract… along with a young prospect or a good draft pick.

It could be Jayden Struble, Owen Beck or the 26th overall pick… or maybe even less than that, when you look at what the Capitals gave up to get their hands on Dubois’ bad contract.

Basu also notes that Laine’s value is pretty much nil and he could be “given away” or close to it to the Habs.

Christian Dvorak will complete the final year of his six-year contract. He has a limited no-trade clause (eight teams), the Blue Jackets are looking for one or more center players (Don Waddell’s word) and Dvorak might even have a chance of breaking into the top six in Ohio.

Dvorak and Struble va Laine, who’d say no? The Habs or the Blue Jackets?

Brendan Gallagher (3 seasons at $6.5 million), Josh Anderson (3 seasons at $5.5 million) and Joel Armia (one season at $3.4 million) are all still under contract with the Habs.

Jeff Petry ($2.34 million) and Jake Allen ($1.93 million) are also on the team’s payroll for another year.

And don’t even get me started on Carey Price…

Overtime

England – Denmark (noon), Italy – Spain (3:00 p.m.), Canada – Argentina (8:00 p.m.)… big day in the soccer world!

– Since we’re talking about the Canadian soccer team, happy viewing!

– The Alouettes will open their home season tonight at Percival-Molson Stadium. It’ll be banner day at the Stade! #OtherFoot

– Victor Wanyama wanted nothing to do with wearing the captain’s armband when he entered yesterday’s game. He tried to give it to Josef Martinez, before passing it on to Jonathan Sirois.

Wow!

– To be continued.
