Who will be the Rocket’s next head coach?
We asked ourselves this question a month ago, before Jean-François Houle signed a new contract…
But the question is back again today, after Houle’s departure for the NCAA .
We’re hearing a lot about Pascal Vincent’s name today because he’s just been fired in Columbus.
He’s available, and he should be one of the favorites to fill the Montreal Canadiens’ club-school vacancy.
But according to Herb Zurkowsky, Sylvain Favreau’s name also seems to be popular at the moment.
The journalist, who covers Montreal sports for The Gazette, has heard that Favreau “could be the leading candidate” to replace J-F Houle in Laval:
Hearing Sylvain Favreau could be leading candidate to coach Laval Rocket. He led Drummondville to a Memorial Cup berth

(OBOXADSQ || []).push({“cmd”: “addBanner”});
Favreau’s name was also circulating a month ago, when the season was over and before Jean-François Houle signed his deal.
And ultimately, it makes sense because Sylvain Favreau has had a fine résumé since the start of his coaching career.
He coached for five years in the Central Junior A Hockey League, he was an assistant in Halifax for four years, he took the Mooseheads to the QMJHL final in the 22-23 season, he won the QMJHL championship with the Voltigeurs last season…
He seems ready to move up to the next level, to put it another way.
And the opportunity could come if the Habs approach him for the head coaching job that’s been vacant in Laval since noon today.
It’s also a good idea because Favreau is used to working with younger players.
The Rocket will be counting on several first- and second-year players next season, and the organization needs to find a coach who is capable of being close to the youngsters in order to coach them in the best possible way and improve their respective development.
That’s the goal, after all.
