Wood: Uses, Properties, and Selection — A Comprehensive Guide for Flooring, Furniture, and Structures

Wood is a fascinating material: it combines strength, aesthetic warmth, and technical versatility. Whether we’re talking about furniture that lasts for generations, floors that can be refinished, or monumental roof structures, wood possesses qualities that explain its longevity and its ubiquity in construction and design. In this article, I offer a comprehensive overview of the main uses of wood, the technologies that enhance it, and tips for choosing the right type based on its intended use.

1. The Intrinsic Qualities of Wood

Wood possesses excellent mechanical strength relative to its mass, natural thermal insulation properties, and resilience against mechanical stress. Depending on the species—oak, ash, birch, spruce, etc.—these properties vary: density, elasticity, and resistance to moisture and fire. The choice of wood species therefore depends on the intended use: a floor, a roof structure, and a musical instrument do not have the same requirements.

2. From Traditional Furniture to Designer Furniture

Antique furniture made of solid wood remains the gold standard for durability. Its success stems not only from the wood species used but also from traditional joinery techniques (mortise and tenon, dowels) that facilitate repair and ensure longevity. Conversely, modern Scandinavian furniture favors clean lines and solid wood for its stability and warm appearance. These two approaches demonstrate that wood, when well-crafted, meets both aesthetic requirements and longevity criteria.

3. Wood Flooring: Why Choose Solid Wood?

Solid wood floors, particularly oak, are valued for their durability and ability to be refinished. A solid wood floor can be sanded multiple times, repaired, and oiled to restore its original luster—an ecological and economic advantage in the long term. Solid wood also offers pleasant thermal inertia and excellent resistance to foot traffic, making it a preferred choice for high-quality interiors.

4. Roof Frames and Structures: The Old and the New

Traditional oak roof trusses have proven their ability to last for centuries. Today, techniques such as glued-laminated timber further expand the possibilities: long-span constructions, curved forms, bridges, and public structures. Glued-laminated timber combines the natural beauty of wood with high structural performance, while remaining lighter than many alternative materials.

5. Exposed Beams and Siding: Aesthetics in the Service of Function

Exposed beams remain an excellent way to showcase the structure while taking advantage of wood’s strength. When it comes to facades, wood siding offers effective weather protection and a warm aesthetic. When properly ventilated and treated, siding can last for many decades and contribute to the building’s overall insulation.

6. Making an informed choice: sustainability and maintenance

To choose the right wood, you must consider its origin (forestry certifications), intended use, and necessary treatments. Sustainably managed and locally sourced wood reduces the carbon footprint. Maintenance (cleaning, oiling, inspections) significantly extends the life of wooden elements. Finally, opting for wood species suited to the intended use limits the need for chemical treatments.

Conclusion

Whether it’s an antique piece of furniture, an oak floor, a monumental roof structure, or a modern timber-frame building, wood consistently proves its relevance. It combines performance, aesthetics, and restoration potential, meeting contemporary needs for sustainability. By choosing suitable wood species, prioritizing responsible practices, and properly maintaining the elements, wood can be made into a sustainable and attractive solution for many projects.

FBI warned of possible Iranian drone attack in California

California Governor Gavin Newsom sought to reassure residents after reports revealed that a federal intelligence bulletin warned of a potential Iranian drone attack targeting the state. Speaking publicly after the memo circulated among law enforcement agencies, Newsom emphasized that authorities had not identified any imminent threat to Californians. The alert, issued by the FBI to federal, state and local agencies, suggested Iran had explored the possibility of launching a retaliatory attack on U.S. soil. While the memo raised concern among officials, Newsom stressed that the information remained preliminary and precautionary, adding that California was coordinating closely with federal security agencies responsible for monitoring national threats.

«Drone issues have been top of mind.»

-California Governor, Gavin Newsom

The FBI bulletin, distributed to law enforcement partners, described intelligence indicating that Iranian actors had discussed the possibility of targeting California with unmanned aerial vehicles launched from a vessel positioned off the West Coast. According to the memo, investigators warned that «We recently acquired information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United State Homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event that the US conducted strikes against Iran.»

The document also cautioned that intelligence remained limited. Officials added that «We have no additional information on the timing, method, target, or perpetrators of this alleged attack.»

Newsom addressed the situation shortly after the memo became public, emphasizing that state authorities had already been aware of the intelligence warning through federal coordination channels. The governor said California continues to monitor developments while working with national security agencies. «Drone issues have been top of mind,» Newsom said when asked about the alert.

He added that state officials were «working collaboratively with the State Operations Center and our federal partners» to review any possible threats. Newsom also reassured residents that officials had not identified any immediate risk tied to the information contained in the federal memo.

Local law enforcement agencies across California confirmed they had received the FBI bulletin as part of standard intelligence-sharing procedures used to warn authorities about potential threats. Police departments and regional security officials said the memo did not identify specific targets within the state.

Nevertheless, some facilities increased precautionary measures while monitoring developments. Military installations, transportation hubs and major public venues are routinely included in such security assessments, and authorities noted that the alert was being treated as part of ongoing vigilance rather than a confirmed operational threat.

-A federal intelligence memo, FBI

The warning emerged amid escalating tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran following a series of strikes carried out in recent weeks across several locations in Iran. While some of the operations targeted military infrastructure and facilities linked to Iran’s defense and nuclear programs, Iranian authorities and regional media reported that civilian areas were also affected. Among the incidents cited by Iranian officials were strikes that damaged residential zones and a school, where children were reportedly killed. The events intensified international concern and further raised the risk of retaliation against American or allied interests.

Iranian leaders have repeatedly condemned the strikes and warned that retaliation would follow. Officials in Tehran described the military operations as aggression and pledged that the United States and its allies would face consequences. Analysts say Iran has historically relied on asymmetric responses, including cyber operations, proxy militias and indirect attacks against Western interests. U.S. intelligence agencies continue to monitor the possibility of retaliatory actions, including scenarios involving drones or maritime platforms. For now, American authorities emphasize that the FBI memo reflects a potential scenario under observation rather than evidence of an imminent or active attack plan targeting California.

A vegan sugar shack just a stone’s throw from Montreal!

As maple syrup season approaches, one place in the Laurentians stands out for its different but equally delicious approach: La Cabane à Tuque, located less than an hour from Montreal. The establishment is reinventing the sugar shack tradition with a 100% vegan version. A rarity that is worth the detour, both for the curious and the already convinced.

Conceived and created by founder Simon Meloche Goulet, La Cabane à Tuque is a bright and welcoming space that invites guests to gather, slow down, and celebrate local cuisine.

La Cabane à Tuque offers an all-you-can-eat sugar shack feast, available in four courses for both lunch and dinner, as well as a family pancake breakfast during spring break. The menu revisits classic dishes with a vegan twist: comforting soup, plant-based creton, millet tourtière, vegan sausages, beans without bacon, forest vegetables and mushrooms, homemade sauerkraut, kimchi, buckwheat and spelt pancakes, a revisited version of pouding chômeur, not to mention organic maple syrup produced on site. Each bite tells the story of the region, the surrounding forests, and a sustainable vision of gastronomy.

Among the new features for 2026: a simple and affordable breakfast option during spring break, allowing guests to discover the world of the sugar shack without too much formality. And the inauguration of a brand new building, constructed directly around the evaporator, allowing the establishment to welcome even more guests.

Open seven days a week during maple syrup season, La Cabane à Tuque proves that it is possible to celebrate Quebec traditions in a different way—with awareness, creativity, and a lot of delicious food.

Canada Seeks Trade Deal as China Pushes Ottawa to Distance Itself From U.S. Influence

The high-level meeting between Canada’s prime minister and China begins today and marks a pivotal diplomatic moment after years of strained relations, opening what both sides present as a renewed opportunity to reset a relationship that gradually eroded during the Trudeau era. The visit signals a clear shift in tone, with both governments emphasizing dialogue and pragmatism after a prolonged period of diplomatic tension. Beijing views the talks as a chance to re-engage Ottawa at the highest political level, while Canada approaches the visit as an opportunity to reinsert itself into major Asian trade discussions. The timing underscores the significance of the moment, as global trade realignments and geopolitical uncertainty push both countries to reassess their strategic priorities and economic partnerships.

China is expected to use the visit to advance a broader geopolitical message, seeking to encourage Canada, a long-standing U.S. ally, to pursue a more independent foreign policy course. China’s state media has already framed the objective in explicit terms, calling on Ottawa to embrace «strategic autonomy» and reduce its alignment with Washington, reflecting Beijing’s wider effort to weaken U.S. influence among allied nations. For Canada, the stakes are equally high, as Prime Minister Mark Carney has said his travel to China is expressly focused on trade, describing the trip as part of a broader push to forge new partnerships worldwide and lessen Canada’s long-standing economic reliance on the American market. As discussions begin, both sides signal that tangible economic and diplomatic gains remain possible if interests align.

New commercial alliances abroad

Prime Minister Mark Carney has framed his China visit as a direct extension of the message he carried throughout his election campaign, during which he repeatedly argued that Canada’s economic and strategic relationship with the United States had fundamentally changed and could no longer be treated as an unquestioned constant. During the campaign, Carney warned that Canada had become overly dependent on a single trade partner and said that this reliance needed to be reduced through diversification and new commercial alliances abroad, signalling a clear break from past assumptions about the Canada–U.S. relationship. That positioning has now translated into policy, with Carney explicitly linking his China trip to the pursuit of alternative trade partnerships. Just days before departing, he reiterated that objective in clear terms, stating: «We’re forging new partnerships around the world to transform our economy from one that has been reliant on a single trade partner, to one that is stronger and more resilient to global shock.»

As the visit gets underway, expectations in both Ottawa and Beijing remain cautiously high, tempered by lingering apprehension after years of diplomatic friction. On the Canadian side, several export-driven sectors are watching closely, including agriculture, agri-food processing, energy, critical minerals, clean technology, manufacturing and the electric vehicle supply chain, where industry leaders are particularly attentive to the future of EV tariffs and broader trade conditions affecting batteries, components and finished vehicles. Companies in these sectors hope the talks can ease market access, clarify regulatory barriers and reduce uncertainty tied to geopolitical tensions. China, for its part, is seeking signals that Canada is willing to stabilize the relationship and explore deeper economic cooperation, while remaining aware of Ottawa’s continued alignment with Washington. The meetings in China, scheduled from Jan. 13 to 17, are widely seen as an initial step rather than a venue for immediate breakthroughs. During his trip to China, the prime minister will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to his office. The visit forms part of a longer international tour, with the Canadian leader set to travel to Qatar on Jan. 18 before heading to Switzerland from Jan. 19 to 21 to attend the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, highlighting the global scope of his diplomatic and economic agenda.
