ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS – AUGUST 28: A general view of the city center from the roof of art storage facility Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen on August 28, 2024 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Dutch cities are struggling to cope with increasing temperatures, largely due to the urban heat island effect. This phenomenon occurs when densely built-up areas absorb and retain heat from the sun, leading to significantly higher temperatures than surrounding rural areas. The urban environment, filled with heat-generating sources like traffic, air conditioning and everyday human activity, exacerbates the heat making cities much warmer. Buildings, roads, and other infrastructure also trap heat, reducing the cooling effect of natural landscapes and further intensifying the heat stress in Dutch cities. Singapore, one of the world’s most trade-dependent economies, faces significant challenges amid escalating global trade tensions and protectionist policies. The recent imposition of universal tariffs by the United States, including a 10% baseline tariff on Singapore’s exports, has disrupted trade flows and weakened external demand. Singapore is particularly vulnerable to these shifts as a small, open economy with outward-oriented sectors such as manufacturing, wholesale trade, and transport. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has warned that the tariffs represent a « seismic change in the global order, » threatening economic growth and job opportunities. Despite its diversified economy and extensive network of free trade agreements, Singapore must navigate these turbulent times by leveraging its resilience, fostering partnerships with like-minded nations, and adapting to the evolving trade landscape, according to local media.
