Trump costs Airport more than $5.5M in egomaniacal renaming bid

Donald Trump has decided to satisfy his ego once again after succeeding in a bid to rename Palm Beach Airport ‘Donald J. Trump International Airport’. Palm Beach International, which sits just five miles from Trump’s infamous Mar-A-Lago golf course, where he visits every week to play golf and host tacky parties for his millionaire donors. The name change was passed with sweeping approval through the GOP-run Florida House, with representatives voting 81-30 in favour of renaming the airport. According to Palm Beach County’s department of airports, the name change will cost more than $5mn to implement.

Democrats scrap on the House floor

While Florida House representatives voted in a clear majority, the sense on the House floor was significantly more divided than the total count implies. Democratic representatives from Florida fought tooth and nail to deny the name change, but their cries were in vain. As soon as Donald Trump announced his wish for the renaming, Republican senators trampled over each other to shout their approval of the President. Nonconsequential name changes are the kind of pro-Trump behaviour MAGA-verse politicians will take every opportunity to support in order to show their support for America’s fearless leader.

Florida House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell called the name change a grift, even if Trump claims his family will receive no financial compensation for the name change. GOP lawmakers lauded the move, citing Trump’s stellar reputation and his positive impact on Palm Beach. According to GOP state Rep. John Snyder, Trump has turned Palm Beach into one of the most desirable and important locations in the world, and Mar-a-Lago is a symbol of power for the United States. Snyder also called the golf course the ‘winter White House, ’ leading to questions about the merging of government office and personal property. The renaming also raises questions about the intersection of public infrastructure and private brand ownership, as it was Donald Trump’s LLC that originally lobbied Congress to rename the airport.

Another Trump building?

In December 2025, Donald Trump added his name to the legendary Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, renaming it the Donald Trump – John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (very subtle). After Trump quite literally slapped his name on the Kennedy Center in December 2025, the President clearly needed another monument to his greatness – this time around the corner from his other home. While it’s clear that Trump wants to see his name on every building he passes, these re-naming bids are not free, and while Trump’s camp reportedly won’t see any profit from the renaming, it’s also not paying for the logistical costs the renaming includes.

The cost of an ego

It’s unclear how much Trump’s renaming of the Kennedy Center cost taxpayers – the renaming was part of a larger renovation that cost roughly $250 million in Congressional funding. The $250 budget was used in part for the renaming. Donald Trump’s Gatsby-esque ballroom, which he destroyed half of the White House to build, will cost an estimated $400 million. While Trump continues to claim that the ballroom will be funded entirely by private donors and what he calls ‘Great American Companies,’; but with much of the funding still in the air, and the final design for the ballroom only just being approved on January 20th, Trump’s $400 million figure seems more dubious by the day.

With hundreds of millions of dollars already being spent to satisfy Trump’s ego, what’s another $5.5 million? According to Palm Beach County’s department of airports, that’s what the name change will cost to implement: $5.5 million. The costs will include logistical changes such as remaking signs, uniforms, promotional products, and equipment, as will as ancillary costs related to marketing and training. Trump’s holding company, DTTM Operations LLC, also filed patents on the names “President Donald J. Trump International Airport,” “Donald J. Trump International Airport,” and “DJT,” the latter most likely being the airport code Trump hopes Palm Beach International (currently PBI) will switch to once the new name is in place.

An (un)consenting Palm Beach

Surprisingly, while Florida’s House has already voted and passed the bill, the Palm Beach County Commission has not had the chance to weigh in on the effort to rename its airport. While republican lawmakers convince the public that Palm Beach is in debt to Donald Trump, the city did not vote for him in 2024. Donald Trump lost Palm Beach County to Kamala Harris by less than 500 votes in 2024. Palm Beach County has long been a Democratic stronghold, and the Harris’s narrow victory in 2024 was the slimmest democratic win in more than 20 years. Trump’s relationship with Palm Beach has resulted in the county’s demographic seeing a steady flow of high-income conservatives, but Trump still lacks majority support in the county.

New in-depth poll shows the scale of voters displeasure with Donald Trump

A new poll released by YouGov/The Economist revealed statistics on American voters’ opinions of Donald Trump, his actions as President, and a wide range of politicians across the aisle. Unsurprisingly, the polls didn’t reveal anything favourable about Trump. The documents included data on his handling of the Epstein files, ICE agents in Minnesota, foreign relations, and everything in between. The poll also included a list of terms describing Donald Trump and asked voters how strongly they associate the term with Trump. There were only a handful of words that voters strongly agreed Trump personified, including racist, dangerous, corrupt, and cruel. The poll sampled 1,674 Americans and mimicked a scaled, but accurate, demographic makeup of the United States.

Breaking down the votes

The first section on Donald Trump calculated his job approval and his handling of a slew of issues. Included were crime, race relations, immigration, and the environment. Trump scored an impressively poor score in his job approval, with an impressive 56% disapproval rate, and an approval rating below 40%. Trump was closer on crime, but still 47% disapproved of his handling and 43% approved. Immigration was a tougher loss for Trump, with 53% of voters disagreeing, and his handling of race relations scored even worse, with only 34% of polled Americans believing he has done a good job. His score on the environment was no better, with 52% disapproving and 35% approving of his handling of environmental issues.

Up next, voters were tasked with deciding on Trump’s ideology. 57% of voters believe he is a ‘total conservative’, and he got another win in the sincerity column, with an impressive 53% of polled voters thinking that Trump believes what he says. Trump’s faithful showed in the next question, where 29% of voters said they liked him as a person, but 44% saying they ‘disliked him a lot’. Possibly the most telling statistic came from question 19. Voters were asked to poll how strongly they agreed with the statement ‘Trump cares about people like you’. A whopping 47% said they believed the president doesn’t care about them ‘ at all.’

Associated words

In the next section, voters were tasked with connecting terms to Donald Trump and judging how accurately they describe the President. The list of words included honest, intelligent, inspiring, bold, effective, steady, racist, dangerous, corrupt, divisive, cruel, strong, and out of touch. With six positive terms and six negative terms, voters were given an opportunity to praise and criticize the President. Trump did poorly in the honesty section, with just 20% of voters deeming him honest, and he fared no better in ‘inspiring’, with just 18% Americans feeling inspired by the President.

Trump will be glad to know that 43% of Americans describe him as bold, and it’s a safe bet that the real number is higher.

Opinions were split into thirds on whether or not Trump is effective, and voters were stumped on whether or not he’s ‘steady’. Voters were not stumped on whether or not they think Donald Trump is a racist, though. An impressive 47% of Americans would describe Donald Trump as racist, and only 24% believe the word racist does not describe the President. Out of the remaining six terms (dangerous, corrupt, divisive, cruel, strong, and out of touch), only three of them ended with decisive data. Unsurprisingly, they weren’t a positive trio.

Dangerous, corrupt, and cruel

The three categories with the clearest answers were all negative toward Trump. Fifty percent of Americans believe Donald Trump is dangerous. Another 49% believe him to be corrupt, and 46% of voters believe Donald Trump is cruel. Dangerous, racist, corrupt, and cruel.

These are the four words that America has chosen to describe its President, and he’s done his best to exemplify those values over his tenure in the Oval Office. The rest of the poll was also critical of Trump, showcasing Americans’ displeasure with ICE action in Minnesota, and his handling of the Epstein files.

Fifty-seven percent of the population disapproves of his handling of the Epstein files, and another 53% believe Trump is hiding something.

Not fresh news

While we act like this is fresh data, YouGov and The Economist release this poll every year. This is the second year in a row that the general questions on Trump have remained unchanged. The media is writing articles about this poll as if it’s fresh news, but in reality, nearly all the statistics from 2025 are identical to those from 2024. Americans have held these beliefs for at least a full year, so when are they going to do something about it?

Newsom Eyes 2028 Run, Frames Possible Harris Rivalry as «fate»

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is openly contemplating a 2028 presidential campaign, acknowledging in an exclusive interview with CNN’s Dana Bash that his political future could intersect with that of former Vice President Kamala Harris. Speaking during the nationally televised exchange, Newsom did not dismiss the possibility of facing Harris in a Democratic primary, instead casting such a scenario as beyond his control.

Asked what would happen if their «parallel careers intersect and collide,» Newsom replied, «Well, I’m San Francisco now, she’s LA. So there’s a little distance between the two of us. You know, fate will determine that.» The remark immediately fueled speculation about a high-profile California rivalry on the national stage.

Getty Images

Pressed further by Bash about a direct presidential contest against Harris, Newsom reiterated that he sees the matter as circumstantial rather than strategic.

«Yeah I just – that’s fate. I don’t – you know, you can only control what you can control,» he said, emphasizing that he has never tried to obstruct Harris’ political ambitions.

«I’ve never gotten in the way of her ambition, ever. I haven’t. And I don’t imagine I would in the future.»

The comments reflect careful positioning as both figures weigh their options in a party still recalibrating after the 2024 election cycle and looking ahead to a potentially crowded 2028 field.

«If I listened to polls I would have not run for my first office, or my second office — and I certainly wouldn’t be sitting here.»

-Former Vice President, Kamala Harris

Harris, meanwhile, has left little doubt that she remains engaged in national politics. In recent interviews, including a BBC appearance following the end of her vice presidency, she declined to rule out another presidential bid.

«I haven’t decided. Sincerely. I have not decided. I may or I may not. I have not decided,» she said when asked directly about 2028. At the same time, she signaled continued political resolve, declaring, «I am not done.» Harris has framed her career as one rooted in public service, adding, «I have lived my entire career as a life of service and it’s in my bones.»

Those statements have reinforced perceptions that a third run remains plausible.

Getty Images

Early Democratic polling has reflected that possibility. Surveys conducted in the months following the 2024 election have placed Harris near the top of potential primary contenders, in some cases ahead of Newsom.

Although polling at this stage is highly fluid, the numbers suggest that Harris retains significant name recognition and party support despite her previous defeat. She has also dismissed the idea that surveys dictate her political decisions, remarking, «If I listened to polls I would have not run for my first office, or my second office — and I certainly wouldn’t be sitting here.» The comment underscores her long-standing argument that electoral viability cannot be measured solely by early snapshots.

Getty Images

The dynamic between Harris and Newsom carries added weight because of their shared political roots in California. Both rose through San Francisco politics before ascending to statewide and national prominence. Harris served as district attorney in San Francisco before becoming California attorney general, U.S. senator and vice president. Newsom was mayor of San Francisco prior to becoming lieutenant governor and then governor. Their careers have occasionally overlapped in cooperative and competitive ways, including Harris’ account in her memoir of reaching out to Newsom during the 2024 campaign. The possibility of a primary contest would bring that long-running California narrative onto a national stage.

«Well, I’m San Francisco now, she’s LA. So there’s a little distance between the two of us. You know, fate will determine that.»

-California Gov. Gavin Newsom

Despite the mounting speculation, Newsom has stopped short of formally declaring his candidacy. In the CNN interview, he stressed that any decision would be made in consultation with his family. Recalling a text from his son reacting to headlines about a potential run, Newsom said, «My son … it was very powerful, texted me a few months ago when there was some headline that suggested that I made some decision, and he goes, ‘Dad, are you running (for) president?’» Newsom said he told him the choice would be collective.

For now, he insists no final decision has been made, leaving the prospect of a Newsom-Harris showdown in 2028 — as he repeatedly put it — to «fate.»

Mexico Erupts in Violence Following El Mencho’s Death

Widespread violence erupted across multiple Mexican states after Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, was killed during a Mexican military operation in Jalisco, setting off an immediate and coordinated backlash attributed to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Within hours of confirmation of his death, highways were blocked with burning trucks and buses, gunmen torched vehicles to paralyze traffic, and commercial districts shuttered abruptly as residents rushed indoors. Airports reported disruptions, schools suspended classes, and public transportation halted in several cities. For travelers, the situation turned alarming as road closures stranded motorists and hotel guests were urged to remain inside while security forces moved to regain control.

Getty Images

The operation that led to El Mencho’s death unfolded in the mountainous municipality of Tapalpa, Jalisco, where Mexican armed forces engaged cartel members in a firefight. Officials said the cartel leader was seriously wounded during the clash and later died while being transported under military custody. The confrontation left multiple casualties. Authorities confirmed that several suspected cartel members were killed at the scene, while members of Mexico’s security forces also suffered fatalities in subsequent retaliatory attacks. In the days following the operation, violence expanded beyond Jalisco into neighboring states, reflecting the cartel’s capacity to mobilize rapidly and to impose disruptive tactics designed to demonstrate strength and territorial reach.

«The country is at peace.»

-Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum

Retaliatory attacks included coordinated roadblocks across major highways, particularly in western Mexico, where convoys of hijacked and burning vehicles were positioned to obstruct movement. In urban centers, heavily armed individuals were reported patrolling certain corridors, forcing local authorities to deploy National Guard units and army reinforcements. Businesses closed early, public events were canceled, and residents described a tense atmosphere marked by sirens, smoke plumes and uncertainty. Travelers in affected regions reported sheltering in hotels as transportation routes became impassable. U.S. officials issued security alerts advising citizens to avoid travel in impacted areas and to «seek shelter and remain in residences or hotels,» underscoring the seriousness of the unfolding situation.

Getty Images

President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the country following the outbreak of violence, seeking to reassure the public while acknowledging the scale of the security response.

«The country is at peace,» she said during a press conference, adding, «It’s calm.»

Her administration emphasized that federal forces were actively dismantling roadblocks and restoring order, framing the operation as a decisive action against one of the country’s most powerful criminal figures. Security officials confirmed that dozens of blockades were removed and that federal troops were deployed in reinforced patrols. The government maintained that the objective was to prevent further civilian harm while stabilizing regions destabilized by the cartel’s reaction.

Getty Images

The killing of El Mencho marks a significant moment in Mexico’s long-running confrontation with organized crime. As founder and leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, he oversaw one of the country’s most powerful trafficking organizations, with influence extending into fentanyl production and distribution networks that have drawn intense scrutiny from U.S. authorities. His death removes a central figure long sought by both Mexican and American officials, yet analysts caution that leadership vacuums can trigger internal fragmentation or further violence as factions compete for control. The immediate wave of unrest illustrates the group’s operational strength even in the absence of its top leader.

Getty Images

In the aftermath, questions remain about how quickly stability can return and whether the cartel will consolidate under new leadership or splinter into rival factions. Security analysts note that major cartel operations often prepare contingency plans for succession, suggesting that violence could persist as new figures assert dominance. For residents and visitors alike, the sudden eruption of coordinated attacks served as a stark reminder of the volatility that can follow high-profile security actions. While federal authorities insist that order is being restored, the days following El Mencho’s death have exposed the fragile balance between military enforcement and the enduring power structures of organized crime in Mexico.

Trump Now Threatens Netflix And Its Executives

Donald Trump sharply escalated his confrontation with Netflix this week, publicly demanding that the company remove board member Susan Rice as it pursues a high-stakes takeover of Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and HBO assets. Writing on Truth Social in response to a post by conservative activist Laura Loomer, the president issued a direct warning to the streaming giant.

«Netflix should fire racist, Trump Deranged Susan Rice, IMMEDIATELY, or pay the consequences. She’s got no talent or skills – Purely a political hack! HER POWER IS GONE, AND WILL NEVER BE BACK. How much is she being paid, and for what??? Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DJT».

The message immediately injected partisan politics into an already sensitive corporate transaction.

Getty Images

Susan Rice, who served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and later as national security adviser under President Barack Obama, joined Netflix’s board in 2023 after previously stepping down to join the Biden administration as director of the Domestic Policy Council. Her return to the company placed a high-profile Democratic foreign policy figure at the center of one of the most powerful media corporations in the world. Rice has long been a target of Republican criticism over her role in Obama-era national security decisions, and her presence on Netflix’s board has drawn renewed scrutiny as the company seeks to expand its influence through a transformative acquisition.

«This is a business deal. It’s not a political deal.»

-Netflix co-CEO, Ted Sarandos

At the center of the dispute is Netflix’s proposed acquisition of major Warner Bros Discovery assets, including the Warner Bros film and television studio and the HBO brand, in a transaction valued at more than $80 billion. The deal, approved by Warner Bros Discovery’s board in December, would combine Netflix’s global streaming dominance with HBO’s premium content pipeline and Warner Bros’ historic production library. Franchises ranging from DC Studios to long-running HBO series would fall under Netflix’s umbrella if regulators grant approval. The scale of the proposed takeover has already prompted questions from antitrust officials and industry analysts about competition, market concentration and consumer impact.

Getty Images

Netflix leadership has sought to frame the transaction strictly as a business matter. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos addressed the controversy in an interview, stating «This is a business deal. It’s not a political deal.»

Sarandos emphasized that regulatory authorities, including the Department of Justice, are responsible for evaluating the merger under antitrust law. The company has not indicated any intention to alter its board composition in response to political pressure. Instead, executives have focused on the strategic rationale behind the acquisition, arguing that integrating Warner Bros’ production capabilities and HBO’s brand would strengthen Netflix’s competitive position in an increasingly crowded global streaming market.

«Netflix should fire racist, Trump Deranged Susan Rice, IMMEDIATELY, or pay the consequences. She’s got no talent or skills – Purely a political hack! HER POWER IS GONE, AND WILL NEVER BE BACK. How much is she being paid, and for what???».

-President, Donald Trump

The political dimension intensified after Laura Loomer urged Trump to intervene and block what she described as a dangerous consolidation of media power. Trump’s reposting of her message and subsequent demand regarding Rice placed him directly into the corporate governance debate. The president’s warning that Netflix should «pay the consequences» if it does not comply has raised broader questions about the boundaries between political authority and private enterprise.

Legal experts note that while presidents can influence regulatory agencies through appointments and policy priorities, corporate board decisions typically remain under the purview of shareholders and directors rather than elected officials.

Getty Images

As regulators continue to examine Netflix’s Warner Bros–HBO takeover, the controversy surrounding Susan Rice underscores how cultural and political tensions are increasingly intersecting with corporate strategy. The merger, if approved, would mark one of the largest media consolidations in recent history and reshape the competitive landscape of film, television and streaming. At the same time, Trump’s public intervention highlights the degree to which media companies have become central actors in the nation’s political battles, particularly as he has signaled support for Paramount’s competing bid.

Trump allies have openly encouraged efforts to steer control of Warner Bros and HBO away from Netflix, framing the rival proposal as a preferable alternative in both political and regulatory terms. Whether the pressure campaign alters the boardroom calculus at Netflix or simply intensifies partisan rhetoric remains uncertain, but the confrontation has already elevated the stakes of an already consequential deal.

New legal twist in Prince Andrew case: King Charles’ reaction and what it means for the monarchy

The arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on his 66th birthday has reignited intense public debate in the United Kingdom and abroad. King Charles III responded by expressing « the deepest concern, » emphasizing both his personal concern and the need to respect the judicial process. This case, which combines old allegations, the recent publication of millions of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, and questions about the exercise of public office, is a significant test for transparency and accountability among the elites.

Royal shock: King Charles expresses deep concern In his statement, the sovereign chose to maintain institutional distance: he indicated that the palace would not interfere in the investigation and insisted on respect for the judicial institutions. The message is twofold: family compassion and commitment to the independence of the judiciary, in order to protect the credibility of the Crown.

The context is important. The renewed focus on this case stems in part from the widespread dissemination of documents related to the Epstein network, which has led to a new wave of scrutiny and calls for transparency. These files, sometimes referred to as the « Epstein files, » contain hundreds of thousands—even millions—of pages that have fueled journalistic and judicial investigations. Their publication has reignited outrage over networks of influence and the alleged protections that prominent figures may enjoy.

Prince Andrew's 66th birthday Former Prince Andrew has been publicly associated with Jeffrey Epstein for years, and the case has reached a new stage after repeated accusations, including those made by Virginia Giuffre. Andrew has always denied the allegations against him, and he stepped down from his public duties after the much-discussed 2019 interview with the BBC. Nevertheless, the ongoing investigations and recent arrest show that the scope of these cases may evolve as new evidence comes to light.
According to publicly available information, the investigation is focusing on possible professional misconduct related to his former role as trade envoy. Authorities are seeking to determine whether sensitive information may have been shared inappropriately or whether any abuse of power occurred. Searches and seizures of evidence have been reported, indicating that the investigation is now focusing on material evidence that could support—or rule out—prosecution.

The deepest concern The royal family finds itself in a delicate position: it must both manage personal relationships and preserve the institution. King Charles has chosen wording that aims to limit the institutional fallout while affirming the principle of presumption of innocence and the need for a fair trial. This stance shows Buckingham Palace’s desire to be transparent without interfering with the work of investigators.

The implications are manifold and can be summarized as follows:

  • For Andrew: a potentially lengthy legal and media process, where his public image and the possibility of formal charges remain at stake.
  • For the monarchy: a test of institutional resilience: how to reconcile family support, public duty, and the requirement for impartiality?
  • For public opinion: renewed calls for transparency, especially after the disclosure of numerous documents related to Epstein.

Millions of pages The international dimension adds another layer: in the United States, where the Epstein case has already had political repercussions, some have linked these new developments to broader debates about the impunity of the powerful. Some politicians have seized the opportunity to call for more thorough investigations, while others have denounced partisan manipulation. In any case, the case now goes beyond the scope of a simple national affair.

Virginia Giuffre In this climate, it is essential to remember two principles: the presumption of innocence and the need for a rigorous and independent investigation. The justice system must examine the facts and evidence without external pressure, and public communication from the palace tends to frame collective expectations while affirming respect for institutions. Ultimately, this case is more than a painful private episode: it highlights how public institutions handle crises involving historical figures. For now, the next steps will depend on the investigators’ conclusions and, if applicable, the decisions of the public prosecutor’s office. In the meantime, King Charles has sent a clear message: the royal family will follow the process, cooperate, and seek to protect the integrity of the institution while justice takes its course.

Possible professional misconduct Stay tuned for developments: this case illustrates how transparency, judicial work, and public communication have become essential to maintaining confidence in historic institutions.

Op-ed: Jamil Jivani just can’t stop putting his foot in his mouth

OPINION

Jamil Jivani may just be putting on a masterclass of how to become un-electable in Canada right now, and he just tripled down on his pro-US, anti-Canadian rhetoric with a visit to Washington. After essentially calling Canadians pathetic and spouting a torrent of pro-American sentiments, Jamil Jivani has gone ahead and visited the US, much to the disagreement of his fearless leader, Pierre Poilievre. Poilievre made it extremely clear in his statement after Jivani returned to Canada. Poilievre stated that Jivani speaks only for himself, and it’s Pierre Poilievre alone who speaks for the Conservative Party of Canada.

Jivani bends the knee

In case you missed it, Conservative MP Jamil Jivani has been encouraging Canadians to bend the knee to Donald Trump’s fascist threats of annexation. First, Jivani gave an interview to far-right American outlet Breitbart, something he certainly didn’t need to do. In the interview, Jivani said that Canadians needed to stop throwing a hissy fit over American tariffs. He claimed that Canadians are ‘shooting themselves in the foot’ with their anti-American hissy fit. Calling Canada’s response to Donald Trump’s damaging tariffs insulting enough, but when you realize that Jivani is a longtime friend of US Vice President J.D. Vance, it goes from insulting to appalling.

After multiple Conservative politicians called out Jivani for his statement, Jamill decided to double down on his pro-US behaviour and took a trip to Washington D.C. to meet up with his buddy J.D., U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and automotive manufacturer General Motors. More than 1,000 Canadian auto workers were laid off at a General Motors plant in Jivani’s riding of Oshawa, Ontario, the week prior. Jivani claims he went on the trip to help Prime Minister Mark Carney negotiate a trade deal with the U.S., but the claim is nonsensical. Carney rightly pointed out that Jivani is neither the Conservative Party’s trade critic nor the Canadian government’s Minister of International Trade. No foreign trade delegation would fail to include the Canadian Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, making Jivani’s visit, at best, a tourism trip.

Poilievre strikes

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has made his displeasure with Jivani clear. Poilievre told the media that Jivani does not speak for the party, effectively neutering Jivani’s verbal power in the caucus. It’s never a good sign when your boss tells the world that your words hold no weight. Poilievre also validated Canadians in his statement. The opposition leader claimed that Canadians have every right to feel hurt and angry about the things the President has said about Canadians, and that Donald Trump’s tariffs are wholly unjustifiable. Pierre Poilievre has worked hard to distance himself from the Trump-esque politics that turned him into a household name. After years of successfully fighting the ‘woke mind virus’, Poilievre’s politics came crashing down with Donald Trump’s turn to what sometimes feels like fascism.

What’s next for Jivani

By abandoning Canada during a moment of struggle, Jamil Jivani has effectively ostracized himself from his own Party. What’s confusing is why. After dominating a snap election in Durham after the resignation of Erin O’Toole in 2024, Jivani underperformed in his first proper election in 2025. After the riding of Durham was expanded into Bowmanville-Oshawa for the 2025 Federal Election, Jivani narrowly beat his opponent despite polls projecting a clear win. Since his election, Jivani’s constituents have been critical of his actions, and after his recent anti-Canadian actions, he’s at risk of losing even more support. Some voters see his relationship with J.D. Vance as a bargaining chip; others see it as proof of his willingness to bend the knee to America.

Jivani’s decision to position himself as an independent voice in the Canada-US trade war is a gamble, but if he’s doing it for the right reasons, it could pay off. It’s possible that Jamil Jivani could use his relationship with Vance and the US brass to benefit Canada. Jivani’s riding of Bowmanville-Oshawa has been disproportionately affected by Donald Trump’s tariffs, and it’s not a stretch to claim that Jivani should be working overtime to combat the tariffs. That being said, choosing to belittle Canadians and pander to the US is a strategy that will have consequences back home. There will be constituents who feel betrayed by Jivani’s buddying up to the US, and unless the MP can create actual results from this mess, Jivani’s going to lose it all to the House.

There is no question that Jamil Jivani will be a central figure in the trade war between Canada and the US. What’s unclear is how he will bridge the independent efforts he’s making with Carney’s Federal message. After Carney’s internationally praised speech about Unity in Davos, and a slew of Conservative MPs defecting to the Liberal side, the message to Jivani is clear: get with the program or get out.
