The strangest or most nonsensical fashion trends of the 90s
We can all agree that every decade has had its own trends, and that every generation that grew up in those periods tries its best to defend its own. The majority of these styles may provoke a touch of nostalgia, or even make a comeback several years later, but others frankly deserve to be forgotten. And in this respect, the 90s are no exception, with their share of absurd fashions that we still don’t understand thirty years later. From horrible cuts to extravagant outfits and completely unnecessary accessories, we’ve selected 15 of the strangest fashion trends of the 1990s.

The majority of these styles may provoke a touch of nostalgia, or even make a comeback several years later, but others frankly deserve to be forgotten. And in this respect, the 90s are no exception, with their share of absurd fashions that we still don't understand thirty years later. From horrible cuts to extravagant outfits and completely unnecessary accessories, we've selected 15 of the strangest fashion trends of the 1990s.
Multiple facial piercings
A few piercings are nice, but too many are ugly. On the nose, on the tongue, on the eyebrows, on the chin and not to mention the dozen or so on each ear, there really were piercings everywhere. You'd think it was a contest to turn yourself into a walking Christmas tree.
Upside-down caps
We were determined not to protect ourselves from the sun. Hats have been used for centuries to keep the face in the shade, except in the 90s. In those days, you had to wear your cap with the visor tucked into the back of your neck to look cool even in the blazing 1 p.m. sun in the middle of June.
Dungarees worn with a single strap
The advantage of dungarees is that you don't need a belt to prevent them from falling off. What we don't know is why it's become fashionable to wear just one strap. However, we're not talking about overalls designed from the outset with a single strap. They did indeed have two straps, just that one always had to be undone.
The bowl cut
It's a classic of model children who kindly obey their parents, boys and girls alike. As the name so aptly suggests, it looks as if a soup bowl has been placed on your head and only the protruding strands cut off. To this day, no one understands how it could look so pretty.
White knee-high socks in sandals
Even today, socks worn in sandals are scoffed at, even though they can help keep feet warm in winter. However, wearing them on the street is more than illogical. For that, there are shoes, which seem much more practical. What's more, do socks really have to be white to get dirty?
Leather jackets with metal studs
Rock fans and bikers know all about those black jackets with their huge spikes and other metal decorations. One wonders what they're good for, apart from scaring off those who want to hug you. I can't even begin to imagine the atmosphere when thousands of fans wearing these outfits pile up at concerts.
Giant wallet chains
While tying up your wallet can protect you from pickpockets, using huge chains only makes them more greedy. What's more, these chains are often of poor quality and can easily break in the event of a snatch. If you opt for a sturdier material, expect to pay a few extra kilos.
Tiny, colorful sunglasses
Logically, sunglasses are designed to protect you from the sun. They usually do the job, except when they're the same size as your eyes. With these oval mini sunglasses from the '90s, you have to look directly at the sun to have any chance of not being dazzled by it. See the logic?
Extreme mullet cuts
We weren't about to forget this haircut, which looked so seductive at the time. Basically, your hair should be fairly short at the top of your head and temples, and very long at the nape of your neck. Even today, many people are afraid to take out their old photos for fear of looking ridiculous.
Ultra-high waist pants
We all remember those straight-leg jeans that were tightened not at the waist but above the navel. What's more, you absolutely had to show them off over your t-shirt or you'd look tacky. You ended up with a choked belly, especially in the middle of summer.
Ultra-thick curtain fringe
This haircut was very popular with girls of all ages. It consisted of a thick fringe separated in two and covering practically half the face. With it, it's a little harder to look both ways before crossing the street.
Buffalo shoes
Popularized by the Spice Girls, these shoes with their giant soles were totally in vogue. All the girls proudly walked around in 20-centimeter-high sneakers, as if they were trying to catch the clouds. However, they are extremely difficult to walk in, and can easily sprain an ankle.
Gel-sculpted hair in spikes
The easiest way to rebel against the bowl cut was to do the complete opposite. You'd ruffle up your hair in several spikes, as if you wanted to look like a Dragon Ball Z character. On the other hand, you'd have to empty an entire can of gel to style your hair just once.
Ultra-low-rise pants
Towards the end of the decade, ultra-high waists gave way to ultra-low pants. Now it's imperative to show everyone your underwear, even if it's only the tips. You then have to roll up your pants often enough to keep them from falling down to your ankles. We didn't know how to wear our pants properly at all.
