16 films compete for the Palme D’Or

Introducing the official lineup for the next Cannes Film Festival…

Cannes Film Festival organizers unveiled the 16 films in competition for the prestigious Palme D’Or award.

There are no Canadian films in competition at the festival’s 63rd edition. However, Les amours imaginaires, a new film by Quebec filmmaker Xavier Nolan will be presented in Un certain regard. This is a category that recognizes young filmmakers.

Three French films are among the 16 selected in competition: Tournée by Mathieu Amalric, Des hommes et des dieux by Xavier Beauvois and La princesse de Montpensier by Bertrand Tavernier.

Some films to look for by known directors include Another Year by Mike Leigh, Biutiful by Alejandro Gonzalez and Fair Game by Doug Liman.

Director Tim Burton is the president of the jury for the 2010 edition. The rest of the jury consists of Kate Beckinsale, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Alberto Barbera, Emmanuel Carrera, Benicio Del Toro, Victor Erice and Shekhar Kapur.

Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe, kicks off the festival on May 12. The festival wraps up on May 23.
