A 70s hit gets a makeover

Bassist Peter Hook digs into the cult album Unknown Pleasure.

Joy Division co-founder and New Order bassist Peter Hook plans to bring Unknown Pleasure back to life.

He will perform the entire album with an orchestra and choir at the Vintage at Goodwood festival in the UK on August 15.

Punk music was raging in England in the mid-1970s. At the same time, a small band from Manchester was laying the foundations of the post-punk movement. Joy Division led the transition to what would become new wave.

Joy Division released Unknown Pleasure in 1979. It was the first of only two albums the band would put out. The band’s second album, Closer, was released after enigmatic lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide.

The remaining members of the band reformed as New Order and the rest is history.
