A Day in the Life named best Beatles song

Rock magazine compiles list of top 100 all-time best Beatles songs.

Although it was never released as a single in its own right, A Day in the Life has been proclaimed the best Beatles song, beating out runners up I Want to Hold Your Hand and Strawberry Fields Forever, in a Top 100 list compiled by iconic music magazine Rolling Stone.

Co-written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the winning track appeared on the popular album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club, released June 1967.

"It was a peak," Lennon said in an interview in 1970. "Paul and I were definitely working together, especially on ‘A Day in the Life,’"

I Want to Hold Your Hand, which spent 15 weeks on the chart when it was released in 1963, was ranked the band’s second-best song, followed by the 1967 single Strawberry Fields Forever. McCartney’s slow, sad ballad Yesterday was ranked fourth, followed by In My Life, off the 1965 album Rubber Sole.

The top 10 Beatles songs, as determined by Rolling Stone, are:

1.     A Day in the Life

4.     Yesterday
5.     In My Life
