A new way to smoke in Japan

A new smokeless cigarette launches on the Japanese market.

A Japanese cigarette maker, Japan Tobacco, will launch a tobacco product that you do not smoke the traditional way.

The Zerostyle Mint does not need to be lit or put out in an ashtray and does not leave butts on the sidewalk.

It is a new snuff-style cigarette product. A replaceable cartridge containing tobacco leaves is placed in a plastic cylinder. The cigarette produces no smoke and consumers can use the product for approximately half to one full day on a single refill cartridge, depending on the individual. To allow for easy carry and portability, the refill cartridges are individually wrapped in pouches.

JT developed this in the face of new government restrictions against tobacco. Japan has long been a smokers’ haven where taxes are low and restrictions nonexistent. This is slowly changing and in some areas it is now forbidden to smoke in the street. The government intends to take these measures even further.

A Japan Tobacco spokesperson says, "We have created this product to respond to a concern by smokers who do not want to bother others in public areas. This is a completely different way to smoke."
