A Serious Role for Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank is playing a female pioneer in the film Amelia.

In order for Swank to understand her character, famous female flyer Amelia Earhart, Swank is taking flying lessons.

According to FemaleFirst, Swank intends to get her pilot’s licence, although she is anxious about taking her first solo flight to finish the course.  She explained, "I am (studying for my pilot’s license).  I don’t sweat a lot, but when I fly, my whole back is drenched."

The actress will now join a short list of stars who have all learned to fly, including John Travolta, Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie.

Amelia, which opens in theatres on October 23, follows the life of Amelia Earhart, the legendary American pilot who disappeared somewhere over the Pacific Ocean in 1937, while attempting to fly around the world.
