Alex Ovechkin believes Tom Wilson will be the next Caps captain

Until he breaks Wayne Gretzky’s scoring record, Alex Ovechkin will continue to be the talk of the town. The Russian is only 42 goals away from breaking the record of 99.

He can do it.

But he’ll have to stay healthy. He’s the first to admit it.

Washington may not be the team it was a few years ago, but the players will have to face facts: they won’t win a Stanley Cup with the current squad.

The Capitals have only one goal in mind: to help their captain become the all-time leading scorer.

Tom Wilson will be an integral part of this accomplishment, having signed a six-year contract that will pay him $6.5 million annually.

This pact begins next year. He’ll be in Washington for a long time, then, and that’s one of the reasons he’ll be the next captain, according to Ovi.

Will we really live in a world where Brad Marchand and Wilson are captains?

Despite his antics in years past, 43 remains an excellent teammate and leader. He could also be named by default, as there won’t be many veterans on this team after number 8 retires. I imagine John Carlson could also be considered for the captaincy.

Stay tuned.
