Allergen Labels to Become More Obvious

Food allergen labels will soon be easier for consumers to understand.

One million Canadians suffer from food allergies and 90% of them are allergic to eggs, milk, soy, wheat, peanuts, nuts or fish.

However, the current food labels are not clear and often list ingredients under different names. For example, gliadin, spelt and atta flour indicate the presence of wheat.

The Canadian government is implementing new regulations on the labelling of allergenic ingredients and require that the actual names of ingredients be displayed.
