Alsace opens Munster cheese museum in 2011

Say ‘cheese’ when you visit the Munster museum in France.

If you love cheese and French cuisine, be sure to add the Alsatian city of Gunsbach to your itinerary next year so you can visit the Hexagon.

On April 2, the cheese museum will open to celebrate the history of the regional Munster cheese which dates back more than a thousand years.

According to legend, monks who Christianized the region circa 700 to 800 AD around the time of Charlemagne, passed along their cheese-making knowledge to the locals. The name ‘Munster’ comes from the Latin word for monastery.

When the museum opens its doors in 2011, visitors can learn plenty about cheese-making and its history that is unique to this particular region on the Franco-German border. The museum will also include farmer’s market, restaurant, and educational workshop.
