American Idiot takes to the road

Green Day’s Broadway show going on North American tour.

This week, producers announced that Broadway show American Idiot, based on the Green Day concept album of the same name, will begin a North American tour in December, reports the Hollywood Reporter.

The musical premieres in Toronto for a two-week run December 28 to January 15, and wraps up in Seattle, Washington for a five-show run June 5 to 10, 2012.

The award-winning stage musical enjoyed a successful run at the Berkeley Repertory Theatres in 2009 in California, before moving to the St James Theatre on Broadway with previews beginning March 24, 2010.

The show, which features an onstage band, opened to mixed and positive reviews, and received an all-important rave review from the New York Times. American Idiot won two 2010 Tony Awards for best scenic design of a musical, and best lighting design of a musical, and was also nominated for best musical. On February 13, 2011, it won a Grammy Award for best musical show album.

The show closed on April 24, 2011 after 422 performances. While Green Day did not appear in the production, lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong performed the role of ‘St. Jimmy’ occasionally throughout the run.

Casting and additional dates are expected to be announced shortly.
