Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black hits new sales record

Singer’s death has pushed album back to top of charts.

At the news of her untimely death, Amy Winehouse’s albums soared back to the top of the charts, and the additional sales have helped her break a new record, becoming the best-selling artist of the 21st century on the British charts.

Selling 3,259,100 copies, her 2006 album, Back to Black, has now beat out the previous record holder, James Blunt’s 2005 album Back to Bedlam, which sold 3,241,118 units.

American singer Tony Bennett – who was the last artist to record with Winehouse before her death – will introduce a tribute to the singer during the 2011 MTV Music Awards this Sunday (August 28). Proceeds from their duet, Body and Soul, will go towards the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a new charity set up by the Winehouse family to help people struggling with addiction.

"It was a thrill to record with Amy Winehouse and when you listen to the recording of ‘Body And Soul’, it is a testament to her artistic genius and her brilliance as one of the most honest musicians I have ever known," said Bennett.
