An Effective Treatment for Infantile Bronchitis

By combining two medications, doctors have succeeded in reducing the number of babies being hospitalised due to a respiratory infection.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that the combination of two drugs, epinephrine and dexamethansone, reduced the number of babies being hospitalised for bronchitis (an inflammation of the bronchioles in the lungs) by 35%.

Dr. Amy Plint, Dr. Terry Klassen, Dr. David Johnson and Dr. Hema Patel worked with 800 babies hospitalised because of a respiratory infection.

"Until this point, we’ve had no good treatment options for bronchiolitis, except for supplemental oxygen and extra fluids. In this study, we looked at two medications that have been used to treat bronchiolitis without great benefit when used separately. But, combining the two resulted in a reduction of hospitalizations," explained Dr. Plint.
