An Electric Audi Convertible

After the success of its e-tron prototype at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi has announced that an electric convertible is on its way to production.

Called the R4, Audi’s project is somewhat of a cross between the TT and the R8. Thanks to VW’s recent acquisition of Porsche, the Audi R4 will adopt the same platform as the forthcoming Boxter and Cayman.

The R4 will be also be offered as a gas model, with an engine most likely derived from the TT-RS, which runs off a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder 335 hp turbo.

At the top of the range, we will find the electric model based on the e-tron concept, with a convertible also in the works to give the Tesla Roadster a little competition.

The R4 electric is expected to take on the e-tron’s system, including two electric motors on each axle and the Quattro all-wheel-drive, and should deliver around 300 horsepower.

The Audi R4 is set to make an appearance in 2012.
