The High School Musical star asked Vanessa to marry him because her mother didn’t approve of them living together without being married, according to the National Enquirer.
"Zac is relieved to be out of the pressure cooker, because Vanessa’s mother has been putting serious heat on him. She is old-school and doesn’t approve of Vanessa living with Zac without some type of wedding promise," a source told the tabloid.
According to rumours, Efron proposed in January while the two were in Japan. The two stars plan to wed next year.
