According to Variety, Angelina Jolie is getting ready to accept the main role in the spy thriller Edwin A. Salt.
Tom Cruise had been committed for a long time to be part of this project, but he finally backed out.
When Angelina Jolie’s interest was piqued in the film, the studios decided to rewrite the screenplay by Kurt Wimmer, and change the gender of the main character. Naturally, Edwin A. Salt will also get a title change suitable to describe a female.
Jolie will play a CIA agent accused of being a Russian spy. She will have to dodge those who are after her long enough to prove her innocence.
Philip Noyce (The Bone Collector) will still remain director of the project.
Edwin A. Salt would mark the actress’ return to work after the birth of her twins. Another film, entitled Atlas Shrugged, adapted from a novel by Ayn Rand, could also be Jolie’s choice as her comeback film.
