"I remember being really nervous, thinking, she’s such an intelligent European woman – what are we going to do together?" says Jolie, 31.
The two women chose to watch a serious, existential theatrical production for their first meeting, but were both happy that their children didn’t permit them to stay long.
Mariane Pearl was the wife of Wall Street Journal writer, Daniel Pearl, who was captured and killed by Islams in Pakistan.
Following her husband’s death, Mariane was not sure how she could raise her son alone. "I was alone in New York with Adam, still having a rough time [after Danny’s death]," Pearl tells Glamour. "I read an interview with Angie in a magazine, about her and Maddox and her life as a single mom. And I thought, this woman could be my friend. … So I sent her a note saying, do you want to have a playdate?"
The two women have become good friends, and have much in common.
A Mighty Heart was produced by Brad Pitt’s company, and will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival this month before opening in theatres in June.
