Angelina Jolie will play Cleopatra

Angelina Jolie may portray the Egyptian queen on the big screen.

Angelina Jolie is tipped to embody Cleopatra in the film adaptation of the book Cleopatra: A Life.

Producer Scott Rudin (It’s Complicated, Julie & Julia) acquired the rights to the biography written by Stacy Schiff. It will be released on November 1 by the publisher Little, Brown and Company.

Schiff mentions that Jolie is physically perfect for the role, despite the fact that few details are known about the true appearance of the sovereign. Cleopatra is remembered for relationships she had with Marc Anthony and Julius Caesar.

A spokesperson for Rudin confirmed the news to USA Today.

In 1968, Elizabeth Taylor played the Egyptian queen in Cleopatra. Richard Burton played Mark Antony and Rex Harrison was Julius Caesar.

Catherine Zeta-Jones is also preparing to embody Cleopatra in the musical drama Cleo directed by Steven Soderbergh.

Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie stars in Salt coming to theatres on July 23 and The Tourist which will be released on February 16, 2011.
