Annie Lennox Wins the Nobel

Annie Lennox was crowned the "Woman of Peace" this week.

The former Eurythmics singer was granted the Nobel Peace Prize on Wednesday (November 11) in Berlin.

The Scottish singer received the award in recognition for her fight against HIV/AIDS.
Lennox was chosen for her dedication to the cause, while working to educate the public on the impact of the disease on women and children, especially in South Africa with her SING campaign.

While she was accepting her award, the singer stated, "I want to express my profound gratitude and deep humility. I honour all the women working around the globe to reduce the effects of this pandemic. This is for them, they truly deserve it."

Since 2003, SING has raised 2 million dollars and through its affiliation with the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), helped to provide tests and treatment for South Africans, educate them on the HIV virus, and develop prevention programs.

The 54-year-old singer says that her inspiration came from the former South African president, Nelson Mandela, who described the HIV pandemic in Africa as a genocide.
