Another Michael Crichton Novel Heads to Theatres

Steven Spielberg is developing a film project based on Michael Crichton’s last book, Pirate Latitudes.

According to USA Today, Spielberg plans to bring Crichton’s final work to the silver screen.

The story takes place off the coast of Jamaica in 1665, and tells the story of an undercover mission into the town of Port Royal to steal a Spanish treasure.

Screenwriter David Koepp wrote the script.  He also adapted the Crichton novels Jurassic Park and The Lost World into screenplays.  Steven Spielberg will produce the project, but also plans to direct.

Michael Crichton died last year after a battle with cancer.  Timeline, The Terminal Man and Rising Sun are among his many novels that have been made into movies.

Steven Spielberg’s next release will be The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, opening December 23, 2011.  He will also begin working with Will Smith in the film Old Boy.
