Arcade Fire impromptu backyard gig

Montreal band goes from Madison Square Garden to library backyard.

Shortly before the official start of summer, in preparation for the release of their third album, The Suburbs, Montreal group Arcade Fire began playing some rather unusual venues.

Whether they played the small city of Sherbrooke, or a shopping centre parking lot in Montreal’s South Shore, the group was becoming known as a surprising and innovative act.

Their latest gig in Big Sur, California showcases the band’s quirky nature, where they played to an intimate crowd of 250 in the small backyard of the Henry Miller Library, according to Spin magazine.

Despite the constant threat of rain, Arcade Fire performed on a small stage, with no lighting trusses or a roof. Inspired by the famous Woodstock concert, Win Butler urged the crowd to chant “No rain!”

In early August, Arcade Fire played to a packed Madison Square Garden in New York City with the concert later broadcast on YouTube.
