Arctic Monkeys didn’t want their new album to sound like "four lads playing in a room."
The ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ band have fused rock and hip-hop into their upcoming fifth studio album ‘AM’ but frontman Alex Turner was eager for the group – also made up of Jamie Cook, Matt Helders and Nick O’Malley – to pull off a sound that has a bizarre beat.
Speaking to NME magazine, Alex said: "We wanted it to sound less like four lads playing in a room this time around."
He added: "Essentially, that’s what it is, but if you can find a way to manipulate the instruments or the sounds to the point where it sounds a bit like a hip-hop beat that’d be boss in your car, then I think there’s something quite cool about that."
The band have a formula for creating their catchy tracks, which includes making the sound and then penning the lyrics afterwards.
Speaking about how developed their ‘I Want It All’ song, Alex explained: "It were quite early on, that one. We were messing around with this four-track cassette recorder, and he [Jamie] was playing this riff, so we recorded five minutes of that I wrote melodies and lyrics over top.
"That became a formula, almost – we recorded instrumentals on this four-track and then I’d sit with my headphones on and write."
‘AM’ is released in September.
