Arnold Schwarzenegger to make The Last Stand

Former California Governor confirms his return to films.

After the shocking news surfaced that he fathered a 14-year-old child with a one of his housekeeping staff, actor and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger chose to put his career on hold to deal with the fallout including the subsequent divorce from wife of 25 years, Maria Shriver.

Yesterday (July 12), Lionsgate announced that Schwarzenegger will be making his return to film in The Last Stand, which the company is developing as a starring vehicle for the 63-year-old actor.

Schwarzenegger will star as Sheriff Owens, a man resigned to fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction, having left his LAPD post following a bungled operation that left his partner crippled.

The leader of a drug cartel escapes from a courthouse and, along with a hostage and a fierce army of gang members, speeds towards the Mexico border, where the only thing in his path is the sheriff and his inexperienced staff.

Due out in 2013, the action-thriller will be directed by Korean action-suspense master Kim Jee-Woon (A Tale of Two Sisters, The Good, the Bad and the Weird) based on a spec script by Andrew Knauer that was subsequently rewritten by Jeffrey Nachmanoff.

According to a spokesperson, the actor is currently in discussions for several other projects.
