It’s the beginning of the Rio Carnival!

In a sign that the severity of the pandemic is waning, Brazilians are once again hosting the world’s most famous carnival, Rio de Janeiro.

Originally scheduled for last February, the Carnival of Rio instead started in the last hours due to a postponement caused by the pandemic. Brazil experienced a huge spike in cases of the Omicron variant that spread throughout the country in January and February.

The first carnival was conceived in 1640, when it was a festival based on the Roman festival of Saturnalia, where participants paid tribute to the Greek gods of wine, Saturnalia and Bacchus.

African culture has since greatly influenced the carnival with the introduction of samba music in 1917. Samba is now considered traditional Brazilian music.

The Rio Carnival culminates in the Sambodromo on the avenue Marquês de Sapucaí. This huge stadium hosts 80,000 enthusiastic visitors who applaud some 5,000 participants.

The Rio Carnival is held until April 30.

Chelsea FC: Lewis Hamilton and Serena Williams are among the potential buyers

Two of the biggest stars in sports, Lewis Hamilton and Serena Williams, are among a group of investors who want to buy the English soccer club Chelsea.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the assets of many Russian oligarchs have been frozen by various countries around the world. Among the billionaires close to Vladimir Putin affected by these measures is Roman Abramovich, owner of the Premier League soccer club.

Roman Abramovich has also seen France confiscate a dozen properties from him.

Chelsea FC has been under trusteeship since the start of the war and is now looking for a new owner. At least three groups have already shown interest in the club, which was founded in 1905, and is reportedly selling for around 3 billion pounds (4.9 billion Canadian dollars).

One of these groups is said to include F1 champion Lewis Hamilton and tennis champion Serena Williams. According to Sky News, the two athletes are each investing $13 million (US ) in the venture, along with other partners.

In addition to the group of two big stars of their sport, Todd Boehly, owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Stephen Pagliuca, owner of the Boston Celtics, are also said to be in the running to become owners of the European champions of the game.

Lewis Hamilton and Serena Williams are not the only sportsmen interested in investing in the Premier League. Basketball icon LeBron James has owned a stake in Liverpool FC since 2011.
