The Habs have the best future in the NHL (according to The Athletic)

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a dominant team on the ice in Montreal. The Canadiens have made the playoffs twice in the last five years, but they’ve never really had a legitimate chance of winning the Stanley Cup. That could soon change, though. The club is building a really solid foundation, and with the youngsters in place, it’s possible to be optimistic about the future. On this subject, Scott Wheeler and Dom Luszczyszyn(The Athletic) have carried out a really interesting exercise. By combining the levels of current players and the levels of prospects in each club, they were able to create a model that shows where the teams are and where they’re going in the next few years. And it’s interesting to see that the Canadiens, in the two guys’ model, are the club with the best future in the NHL.

In the text, we read that Hutson, Demidov, Slaf, Fowler, Suzuki, Reinbacher, Dobson, Montembeault, Bolduc, Caufield and Hage are seen as player guys who will help the team be one of the league’s best:

[content-ads] The future is bright in Montreal and it’s not the first time we’ve said it.

There’s already a nice core in place with guys like Caufield, Slaf, Suzuki, Demidov, Bolduc, Hutson, Dobson, Monty, Guhle… and when the other players are added (I’m talking here about Reinbacher, Hage, Zharovsky and Fowler), it should make for something really interesting on the ice. And the Canadiens will have the resources to be dangerous at all positions too. That, to me, is the most interesting part of looking at the Habs’ future situation. Obviously, there are no guarantees here. The plan can always go off the rails, you never know what can happen at any moment… but if the stars align and everything goes the right way, the Canadiens really could be in for a lot of success – and for a long time.

New face of the NHL: Hutson receives one vote in player survey

Several NHL players took part in the NHL Media Tour, which took place last week in Vegas. And for the occasion, The Athletic took the opportunity (for the third year in a row) to question several guys about lots of different topics. One of the questions went something like this: “Not counting the current stars, who will be the next face of the NHL?”… and the answers were interesting “Macklin Celebrini (24 votes), Gavin McKenna (4 votes), Connor Bedard (3 votes) and Matthew Schaefer (2 votes) were the most popular players in the poll. But it’s also worth noting that six players each received one vote. We’re talking about James Hagens, Zayne Parekh, Leo Carlsson, Jack Hughes, Matvei Michkov and… Lane Hutson. Seeing the defenseman on a list like this is intriguing:

It’s intriguing because Lane Hutson is a 5’9 defenseman who was still able to have a huge first season in the National League. And deep down, his talent doesn’t go unnoticed… because there’s at least one NHL player who sees him as the next face of the Bettman circuit. Speaking of the Canadiens’ defenseman, let’s not forget that he hasn’t signed his new contract yet. And perhaps the Canadiens are also waiting to see what the Devils will do with Luke Hughes, who must also sign a new contract. Is there a link between the two defensemen’s situations?

Let’s remember one thing, though. Just because Hughes signs for the long term doesn’t mean we’ll see Hutson do the same. The idea of a shorter contract may interest him… because he could sign an even more lucrative deal when his next contract expires with the increase in cap and salary in the National League. We know the Canadiens would like that, to put him under contract for eight years. But maybe the player wants less… and maybe it has something to do with the fact that he hasn’t signed his contract yet. To be continued. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Yes.

– Indeed.

– The situation must be resolved.

Martin St-Louis expects to see the best version of Patrik Laine this season

When he arrived in Montreal last year, Patrik Laine wasn’t at the top of his game: he hadn’t played in a while, he was recovering from surgery… and he’d had to miss games due to his mental health. On the other hand, Martin St-Louis – who spoke to reporters this morning – liked what he saw from the player this summer. Laine spent his summer on the ice, he worked hard to be ready for the start of the season, and that can produce an interesting result. In fact, the Habs pilot went further, saying that we could possibly see the “best version” of Patrik Laine this season. Laine is in shape, he has what it takes to help the Canadiens on the ice… and with his current state, he can become a really important player in the Montreal line-up. St-Louis is well aware of this:[content-ads] If Patrik Laine does things the right way on the ice, the Habs could have a top-6 player. Laine has the skills to succeed, and we know how devastating his shot is too, but everyone can also recognize the fact that it was his level of effort that bothered many last season. We didn’t see him get involved every night, and when he did, the Finn (very) often found himself at the heart of several criticisms the day after a game. There’s a great opportunity presenting itself for him, though. Laine is likely to start the season with Ivan Demidov at his side(and Kirby Dach at center), and the two wingers seemed to build a certain chemistry this summer in Brossard. Laine – Demidov, that could become dangerous. Especially if Dach can keep up, too…

Laine has worked hard this summer, the Canadiens’ head coach acknowledges… and ultimately, it’ll be interesting to see what can come of it. Because once again, with Patrik Laine at the top of his game, things can change on the ice. And if we truly witness the best version of the sniper from the start of the season, there could be some interesting results too. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – I don’t hate the idea.

– Nice line-up.

– Of course.

– To be continued.

Kirby Dach to start camp as second center

The cat’s out of the bag: Martin St-Louis said on Monday that he already knew who his second center would be to start the season. But this morning, he did: Kirby Dach.

Of course, that doesn’t mean it will be the case for the whole camp and for the first game of the season. But right now, he’s the one in that chair, and it’s up to him not to lose it. He’ll have to earn his ice time, and we can probably expect Ivan Demidov to be there and Patrik Laine alongside him. Zachary Bolduc is also an option, of course, but in light of the coach ‘s comments on Laine, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the top-6 – especially knowing that the Finn doesn’t have a bottom-6profile . #MeilleureVersionDePatrikLaine[content-ads]

Compulsory military service: Canadiens’ prospect Arseni Radkov needs to sort it out

Arseni Radkov isn’t the Canadiens’ best-known prospect. The goaltender was selected in the third round (82nd overall) in 2025 by the Habs at the last draft. This year, the plan is for him to play with the Armada. In the last few days, he was present at the Canadiens’ rookie camp. He even played a half-game at the Bell Centre when he came on Sunday to back up Jacob Fowler.

Normally, the goaltender who was traded back to his junior club on Sunday night would have simply taken the 15 to Blainville following the rookie camp, but he took a detour to his native Belarus instead.

According to Mikaël Lalancette, who wrote on the subject for Le Soleil newspaper, the Armada goaltender was forced to return home to deal with passport issues. His club preferred that he settle everything at home, to simplify the process. content-ads]

What Lalancette explains in his paper is that the Belarusian authorities feel that his current status does not give him permission to avoid compulsory military service. It’s stories like these that are scary when it comes to relying on a player who grew up in a country with values different from Canada’s, isn’t it?#All this to say that Radkov, who had his head elsewhere at the rookie camp, will try to get out of it and return to Blainville as soon as possible. The fact that he played outside his country in recent years and that he only turned 18 last August are elements that work against him.

The Armada, who are also without their goaltender Jakub Milota (Nashville rookie camp), must be hoping that their Belarusian goaltender will be able to return as soon as possible to help the club… but above all to put the situation behind him. And let’s just say that the Habs must also be hoping that he’ll be able to return in the next few days and resolve the situation quickly. A big story to follow, then.[spacer title=’en rafale’]- Wow. Brendan Gallagher: teams interested in snapping him up

Let’s talk about Brendan Gallagher. This morning, on BPM Sports, Renaud Lavoie talked about the forward and his importance to the Montreal Canadiens as a veteran of the club. It happened in his second segment of the morning show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96ndicgJFhw Renaud Lavoie, who’s good at coming up with relevant information every morning on air with Anthony Desaulniers, Anthony Marcotte and Gilbert Delorme, talked a little about the veteran market. From what angle? He wanted to talk about the fact that a few months ago, Brendan Gallagher’s name had been circulating in the rumour mill. David Pagnotta had mentioned that the Habs had made Gally available on the market, and he said: “

There

s no way the Canadiens want to part with Brendan Gallagher. The organization’s respect for this guy is very, very high.

Renaud Lavoie

[content-ads]Desaulniers then asked him if there was really demand for a guy who doesn’t play up to his $6.5 million-a-year contract… and Lavoie told him: you’d be surprised. In other words? The #11’s reputation is good across the NHL, and if he were available, clubs would be sniffing around. I also have my doubts as to whether Gallagher could really be traded (even with a salary cap hit), but I have no doubt that he’s loved in Montreal and that the club doesn’t see the advantage of sending him elsewhere.

And he’s not just loved by management and the guys in the dressing room…

Since he’s a little pest on the ice and earns a lot of money, I really think his best value is here. And I don’t see why Gally, who loves the Habs and married a Québécois, would want to leave, now that the Habs are coming out of their rebuild. The young wolves have to rely on veterans in the dressing room and Gally is part of the equation. With Josh Anderson last year, they showed the youngsters the way despite injuries and bereavements. #Culture[spacer title=’Overtime’]- Excellent question.

Kirill Kaprizov: the Wild would ask the Canadiens for Ivan Demidov in a possible trade

The Minnesota Wild are currently in a, shall we say, delicate situation. Kirill Kaprizov, the city’s star player, has turned down an eight-year, $128-million deal… and all of this makes us wonder about his future.Remember that Kaprizov will become a free agent on July 1, andthe Wild obviously want to keep him, but above all they don’t want to lose him for nothing.Obviously, the Wild want to keep him, but they also don’t want to lose him for nothing,so the idea of trading him is gaining ground. And on The Shaun Starr Show, Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico wondered what it would cost the Habs if they wanted to stick their noses into the matter. D’Amico recalls that the chances are extremely slim… and when he started talking about what it would cost, he named a name: Ivan Demidov.

Because that’s the player the Wild would be targeting to send Kaprizov to Montreal. https://youtu.be/ZqYrcvhLH0s?si=o-fsjc5siPvejmK4&t=351 [content-ads]There’s reason to believe that the Habs would turn down Demidov pretty quickly (he’s probably, after Nick Suzuki, the most untouchable player in town). So, the most competitive offer the Habs could make would start with Cole Caufield or Juraj Slafkovský.And clearly, the club is going to have to add something extra: simply giving away one of those two players clearly won’t be enough. And considering that Kaprizov will want $16-17 million a year on his next contract, that’s starting to look like a lot of money. For the time being, though, the Wild don’t want to rush things. According to Pierre LeBrun, who provided an update on the file during the Insider Trading segment, the Wild aren’t ready to talk to other teams about a deal involving Kaprizov. And the offer of $128 million over eight years is still on the table.

But in reality, the Wild can’t be patient forever. If negotiations continue to stall, the club will eventually have to ask itself if it’s really ready to lose the Russian superstar on the free-agent market. That said, seeing him land in Montreal seems pretty unlikely.Spacer title=’Overtime’]Lane Hutson could hit that wall too.– Habs prospect Bogdan Konyushkov is dreaming of his first NHL game. Arber Xhekaj has put his car up for sale on Facebook

On the ice, Arber Xhekaj is a guy who likes to hit and upset opponents, and is known as a mean player who can also fight when the occasion arises. But… off the ice, we’re also talking about a guy who loves cars: in 2024, he gave his father a gift – with Florian’s help – by buying him his dream tank. And it’s clear that Arber’s passion for cars comes from his dad when we see the vehicle in question:

But we also notice that Arber loves vehicles when we see him selling one of his cars on Facebook (Marketplace).

The HabsOnReddit account came across this great find: the Sheriff has put his BMW M3 (year 2003) up for sale and in the description, the defender mentions that it’s in excellent condition. The car is beautiful, too:

[content-ads] It’s funny, though, because buying a car from an NHL player, on Facebook no less… that’s got to be pretty funny. It makes for a good story, at least. And it sure makes it feel a little more special, driving around in a pro athlete’s old car. That said, you never know what you might find on the various social platforms when it comes to buying something, and this is a wicked good example of that. I wonder if Arber will find or has found a buyer for his vehicle… and if he’s happy with his acquisition, if he ever does.Hehe. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – It’s coming.

It’s going to take a lot for David Reinbacher to make the club

Is David Reinbacher ready to make the jump to the NHL? If it weren’t for his injury last year, Reinbacher would have made his NHL debut by now. And by camp 2025, he’d be closer than ever to a full-time spot in the sun. And while we suspect he’ll be playing in the NHL – barring disaster – at some point in 2025-2026, we don’t know if it’ll happen right away.

Obviously, there’s the aspect of space at the blue line that comes into play. That’s true for David Reinbacher and for Adam Engstrom, but the fact that there are six established defensemen who can’t go to Laval without avoiding the waivers (and that Lane Hutson won’t be going) makes it difficult for the youngsters.[content-ads]

Yes, the Canadiens WANT Reinbacher to be good enough so that he can, at camp, make his mark on the heels of sparkling performances (we’re not talking the same sparks as for Ivan Demidov, obviously) in exhibition games.

Reinbacher, who didn’t break a sweat in rookie camp, has a long way to go to reach the NHL. And I’m not just saying that because of the weekend’s rookie games. The Snake often says it: for what it’s worth, those games are worth it.But I say it mostly because Pascal Vincent made it clear that Reinbacher needs some AHL mileage to start the 2025-2026 season. content-ads]

The Habs don’t need Reinbacher jumping into the fray right now because of the guys in place. And the club, which strongly believes in his potential as a top-4 defenseman, will do everything in its power to put the Austrian in a winning position. Pascal Vincent, last month, didn’t hesitate to sing the Austrian’s praises. He’s loved in the organization.

His last two have been tough. And right in Montreal, it won’t be easy to eat minutes – especially if Lane Hutson plays there – if everyone’s healthy. Going to dominate in Laval wouldn’t be naughty… especially if he doesn’t dominate in practice camp. It would be the easiest solution, given the current situation [spacer title=’Overtime’]- Of note:

– I like it.

60 players invited to the Canadiens camp

Montreal is starting to smell like hockey again. The Canadiens presented their annual golf tournament yesterday, the rookie camp ended today… and tomorrow the team’s practice camp officially begins. The organization has also announced the identity of the players who will take part in this year’s camp.

This year’s camp will feature 34 forwards, 19 defensemen and seven goaltenders, 40 of whom have NHL contracts, and 16 who will be attending on AHL contracts.

[content-ads] What’s interesting to note is that there are only two junior players attending this year’s camp.

We’re talking about Hayden Paupanekis – who missed the rookie camp due to mononucleosis – and Owen Protz, who really impressed the officials in the two games at the Bell Centre last weekend. It’s interesting to see Protz get a better audition. And it would be cool too, to see him play a pre-season game… because he’s proven he deserves it in my eyes. Remember that the Canadiens will play six pre-season games this year. It will be..

  • Monday, September 22 against the Penguins (Bell Centre)
  • Tuesday, September 23 against the Flyers (Bell Centre)
  • Thursday, September 25 vs. Leafs (Bell Centre)
  • Saturday, September 27 vs. Leafs (Toronto)
  • Tuesday, September 30 vs. Senators (Quebec City)
  • Saturday, October 4 vs. Senators (Bell Centre)

Some players will be cut between now and the last pre-season game, and we’ll see some guys get cut along the way. Some youngsters will be worth keeping an eye on, others will have to fight hard to get a position or leave a good calling card in Montreal… and it’ll be especially interesting to see which players will be able to impress management. And it all starts tomorrow. Finally! [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Oh.

– Already.

– Logical.

– He can still give it.
