What to keep in mind if the Sharks get Carey Price

For 20 years, Carey Price has belonged to the Canadiens. There have been times in those 20 years when Habs fans have wanted to take the Canadian goaltender out of the organization and start afresh.2010 is a good example. But it never happened. Price the longest-serving contracted player in town… even though he hasn’t played in the NHL on a regular basis for four years and hasn’t played at all since 2022. That could obviously change soon. And my fear is that it will be announced within minutes of my post. Oneclub to keep an eye on is San Jose. We’ve known for a long time that the Sharks are in a good position to get the Canadiens’ goaltender, who is now collecting his $5.5 million bonus. But there’s something to note about the Sharks: if they want Carey Price, it’s going to be a different discussion from the Penguins or the Blackhawks. Why? Because a club is entitled to 50 contracts. The Hawks (40) and the Penguins (46) have more than the Sharks, who have 49 contracts on their books, according to PuckPedia. So if the Canadiens, who have 43, want to send Price to California, the transaction will have to be different.

[content-ads]As Nicolas Cloutier mentions, Michael Misa could be the 50th contract. So picking up Price on top of that would mean the Sharks would have too many contracts, if nothing else changes. So concretely, what does it change?

  • If the Sharks get Carey Price, they’d probably have to give the Habs a contract. It could be an AHL prospect with no real chance of ever making the NHL.
  • The Canadiens should give the Sharks a pick or prospect who isn’t on the 50-man contract list. Giving away a prospect who is one of the 50 deals wouldn’t really be an option.

At the end of the day, it won’t prevent a trade if it has to happen. But it does complicate matters a little for a club that would benefit from Price. To be continued. [spacer title=’prolongation’]Let’s not forget that, even if the transaction would benefit the Habs more at first glance, having a $10.5 M out of pocket would make it easier for the Sharks (or any other club that gets his contract) to liquidate salary at the deadline… That’s an aspect not to be overlooked.

Samuel Montembeault in the top-12 in Canadiens history: possible as early as this season

Over the course of his NHL career, Montembeault scored 80 victories, nine of them for the Florida Panthers. Nine of those were with the Florida Panthers, so he logically has 71 with the Canadiens. It got me wondering: in the (very) rich history of the Montreal Canadiens, how well ranked is he in terms of wins? The answer: 16th.

(Credit: StatMuse)

It’s crazy, though, to note that less than two years after being named the club’s #1 goalie, Monty is already ranked 16th in the club’s history. He’s only just arrived in town… he didn’t play much at first… he was part of a ménage à trois… he played in a rebuilding club… that’s not so bad, is it?[content-ads]But above all, when you look at the whole picture, you realize that he only needs 20 wins to take the exclusive 13th spot in history. And with 33 wins, he’d overtake Georges Vézina for 12th place. Isit just me, or is that a lot?In reality, it wouldn’t take much (two seasons of around 25 wins or more) to move up to ninth in the history of the winningest franchise in history.Of course, at the top of the club’s history, there’s also a goalie under contract (for the time being) with the Habs. But let’s just say it’s a different kettle of fish. #CareyPrice

Montembeault has some big years ahead of him. He’ll want to keep his club winning to get back into the playoffs. He’ll want to qualify for the Olympics, and in the medium term, he’ll surely want to earn himself a new contract (two years left on his current deal) in town. It won’t be easy with the youngsters pushing, but he’s capable of doing it.[spacer title=’Overtime’]- To be continued…

September has arrived: Carey Price can now leave

It’s September 1st. You know what that means? It means, of course, that Billie Joe Armstrong has to go to sleep. I say that because, if the singer has to wake up when the month ends, he has to fall asleep at the beginning of the month, right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaZjH0_NUYo But for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens, September 1st means that a very important moment in the off-season has arrived: the arrival of Carey Price’s bonus.

Let’s not forget that Carey Price, who has a $10.5 million footprint on the Canadiens’ payroll until July 1, 2026 (until proven otherwise), is set to receive $5.5 million today. That’s a pretty hefty sum to be deposited in his account. If he feels like it, he’ll be able to take his family to Pacini’s tonight.# Andafter that, he’ll only have two million dollars left to collect in real money – some of it through insurance – within 10 months. Kent Hughes, who has no doubt been working on the file for some time, could be celebrating Labour Day by dancing a big coup: getting (Price’s contract) out of Montreal. We’ve been talking about it for a while, but it’s becoming more and more concrete.

[content-ads]Aside from the nostalgic aspect of seeing Price leave the Habs, we’re sure that John Sedgwick, who has had to deal with the contract for years, will be happy to see it leave the club’s books today, tomorrow or this week.Because yes, we’re pretty sure it’s going to happen soon.

Let’s not forget that many people have been talking this week about the doors that Price’s departure – and especially his contract – could open. Colleague Maxime Truman did so last Tuesday, a little before anyone else. Because without Price, the Habs will have more leeway on the mass, obviously… [spacer title=’en rafale’]- Eh boy.

The truth about Ivan Demidov’s blonde influencer career

Ivan Demidov and his wife Ekaterina Yakovleva are still getting used to their new life in Montreal. The couple arrived on Québécois soil last April and have been spending most of their time in the metropolis ever since. While Demidov has been practicing hard, Yakovleva has not been idle: contrary to what was reported earlier elsewhere, she has not given up on the influencer career she started in Russia before arriving in North America.

A little digging reveals that Yakovleva has deleted a lot of content from her Instagram and YouTube accounts and has been much less active on her social networks in recent months. However, the clean-up of her accounts on these sites is probably more to do with her status as the spouse of an NHL star (or future star) and a desire to limit access to her and Demidov’s private lives.

On the other hand, the influence is still very active on Telegram, a social network that is popular in Russia. Yakovleva posts content several times a week on this site, her most recent post being yesterday.

[content-ads] She shares a lot of content where she gives aesthetic advice on make-up, but the page still contains a lot more content about the Russian’s life and, by extension, that of the couple. In addition to make-up videos, Yakovleva shares a lot of images about her daily life, and even though we don’t often see Demidov, we can often tell what he’s been eating. It’s still surprising when you consider how much more streamlined her Instagram and YouTube accounts are.

What’s more, Céline, the couple’s dog, is the star of many posts. You can even see her certificate as an emotional support dog.On the other hand, while Yakovleva still devotes time to her career as an influencer, it’s questionable whether she can make it a full-time occupation with 818 people signed up to her account.

However, she has plenty of time to consider a change of direction if she wishes, and I really don’t think the couple are worried about their financial future. So no, she hasn’t given up her influencer career. The truth is, she simply chose to focus on her Russian audience. spacer title=’Overtime’] – Can the Caps still finish 1st?

Justin Barron on first pair: Roman Josi can’t be happy

It could be a long winter in the country capital, at least for hockey fans. After a disappointing season last year, in which the Nashville Predators finished 30th in the NHL, the team has been rather quiet during the festival season, so barring a major turnaround, the Preds are likely to remain in the bottom third of the standings.

Need proof of Nashville’s lack of depth at certain positions?According to the Daily Faceoff line-up, Justin Barron would play right wing on Nashville’s first pair of defensemen. I believe Barron has the talent to become a regular defenseman in the Bettman circuit.

However, I don’t think he’s currently ready to play in the top 4 of a National League team. If the Predators have to play Barron on the first pair of defensemen for more than 25 minutes a game, they’re in trouble. It just goes to show that the right side of Nashville’s defensive brigade is pretty weak.

What’s more, if the former Habs player plays the team’s best pair of forwards, he’ll be paired with Roman Josi, but the Swiss defender doesn’t like Barron to take risks up front, deeming it his primary role with the team.

[content-ads] If the two players are to play together in the coming campaign, the younger player is going to have to learn to be more conservative in his style of play.

And if Nashville gets off to a bad start this season, we can expect to see the team throw in the towel quickly and try to get rid of some veterans.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Predators start cleaning house as early as the end of November if the club isn’t thinking of making the playoffs. And the organization has a number of quality veterans who could be of interest to other NHL teams. However, this will depend above all on the Preds’ start to the season. Toronto journalist questions Mitch Marner’s harassment story

The story of Mitch Marner and the Maple Leafs really came to a head: booed after the Leafs’ Game 7 loss to the Panthers, Marner ultimately opted to sign with the Vegas Golden Knights, who had his rights in exchange for Nicholas Roy. The forward’s decision is understandable; Toronto is not an easy place to play, especially for a star with a lot of pressure and often very intense fans.

However, we learned on Friday that in Marner’s case, the fans had really gone too far. In an interview, the Markham native said that angry fans threw objects onto his field, tried to enter his home and made death threats to the point that he feared for his family’s safety and had to hire a security team.

He no longer even felt safe walking his dog with his family. For Marner, this would have been the last straw, and ultimately the reason for his decision to leave the Leafs[content-ads]. However, Steve Simmons, in an article published in the Toronto Sun, questions this version of events. According to the journalist, Marner and his agent Darren Ferris have greatly exaggerated the situation.

The alleged harassment of the player, particularly on social networks, is similar to what we see with other sports stars, and the Maple Leafs’ security team, which handles this type of situation, looked into the matter and saw nothing to worry about.

Several fans also questioned Marner’s version on social networks.

Is the forward trying to make Toronto fans swallow the pill of his departure better? If so, I don’t think it’s necessary. Just from the booing at Game 7, it was pretty clear to everyone that he was done in Toronto. However, Marner has yet to respond to the reporter, and perhaps he’ll be able to back up his story when he does. In short, I think we’ll be hearing a lot more about this story.

Christian Dvorak at the center of the Flyers’ 2nd line: a Daily Faceoff projection

Since the end of last season, we’ve seen a few Canadiens players come to town, but two players from the 2024-25 roster changed addresses when the free agent market opened. Joel Armia is now a member of the Los Angeles Kings, while Christian Dvorak signed a (very) lucrative one-year contract ($5.4 M) in Philadelphia to join the Flyers. We can’t say we’re not surprised at the annual salary Dvorak signed this summer… Habs fans were happy to see his $4.1M salary freed up to sign an even more expensive contract elsewhere. In short, the Flyers seem to be pinning a lot of prospects on the left-handed center. And just for fun, I decided to take a look at the Flyers’ projected lineups by Daily Faceoff. And much to my surprise, the renowned lineup site has placed Dvorak at the center of the second line, surrounded by Trevor Zegras and Owen Tippett.

(Credit: Daily Faceoff)

[content-ads]Let’s just say that looking at the Flyers’ projected line-up, it doesn’t bode very well…Even Noah Cates, who is the third center in Daily Faceoff’s projection, isn’t a very good candidate to play center of the second line. And looking at the defense pairings, it’s not very glorious either.

(Credit: Daily Faceoff)

Flyers fans won’t have much hope in terms of success. At least, they can console themselves with the Gavin McKenna lottery. When a club pins its prospects on Christian Dvorak at the center of its second line, you can’t say it inspires confidence. Even Sean Couturier isn’t what he was in his heyday and isn’t a #1 center anymore. And when you look at the Chicago Blackhawks lineup, they can at least count on Connor Bedard on the first line and Frank Nazar at the center of the second line.

Even the San Jose Sharks seem to have a better chance of success than the Flyers, with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith as their one-two punch. If I had to make a prediction before the season starts, it would be that the Flyers will languish at the bottom of the overall standings for the majority of the campaign and finish last at the end of the season.

Obviously, anything can happen, but on paper, there’s not a lot to like about Philadelphia. spacer title=’Overtime’] – Zibanejad needs to have a better season, and the Rangers will need him at his best.

The Habs don’t see the start of the season as a deadline for improving their club

Although the off-season is drawing to a close and the Montreal Canadiens have yet to add a top-6 player, that doesn’t mean we have to wait until the trade deadline. We know that the majority of trades in the NHL are completed at the deadline or during the off-season, but when it comes to the Canadiens, that’s not entirely true.

Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton like to make trades during the season, precisely before the December trade freeze. The latest addition to our list is Alexandre Carrier, who was acquired on December 18, 2024, just before the famous trade freeze. And needless to say, it was quite an addition to solidify the defensive brigade. But there were also the acquisitions of Patrik Laine on August 19, 2024 and Sean Monahan on August 18, 2022. But as Jeff Gorton once mentioned to Marco D’Amico, the Canadiens don’t see the start of the season as the deadline for improving their club.

[content-ads]It should be pointed out that the additions of Laine and Monahan were types of transactions that will most likely not happen in the coming months: acquiring a contract to lighten another team’s load.

Right now, the Habs are nearly $6 million over the salary cap, which would mean they’re certainly not looking to add a big contract to relieve another club’s financial burden. Obviously, placing Carey Price on the long-term injured list would put the Habs back under the salary cap, but to give themselves more wiggle room, the Habs could certainly trade Price’s contract to a team close to the floor.

And if that were to happen, it would be very soon, as my colleague Mathis Therrien recently mentioned, at which point the Montreal club would look deeper into adding a second center.Let’s wait and see how the market evolves to find out what happens next in Montreal. Adding a 2nd center: the Habs are waiting to see how the market develops

The off-season has been a little quieter than expected, with Mason McTavish and Luke Hughes still on the books and the trade market seemingly dead for the time being. But that doesn’t mean the Montreal Canadiens have given up on their plans to add top-six forwards, specifically at the center of the second line. But according to this article by Marco D’Amico, the Canadiens are waiting to see how the market evolves in the coming weeks, if not days.

“I’ve heard the Habs are watching a few cases, suddenly teams change their minds between now and the December trade freeze.”

A knowledgeable NHL source

[content-ads]The market is very quiet right now and that has restricted executives from making trades to improve their clubs, hoping that some will change their minds on their coveted player. And we know that if the off-season ends, that it’s not Kent Hughes’ style to stop working on a trade until the trade deadline. He has a tendency to make additions just before the start of the season, or well before the December freeze, as he did with Alexandre Carrier. As my colleague Mathis Therrien mentioned in an article yesterday, everything could come together for the Habs as early as tomorrow, since that’s the day Carey Price will receive his final signing bonus. That bonus is $5.5 million, and once it’s paid, teams will be more inclined to add Price’s contract to receive one or more assets. And once Price’s contract is released, the Habs will have more leeway to add that famous #2 center. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this, and D’Amico’s source recently mentioned it to him as well. In fact, here are the teams most likely to acquire Price’s contract starting tomorrow. In short, we’ll have to wait until tomorrow (at least) before we see the Habs make a move, but it shouldn’t be long now. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – J.T. Nick Suzuki surprised Lane Hutson wasn’t invited by Team USA

Although the Canadiens will aspire to make the playoffs for a second consecutive season, Montreal will have one of the NHL’s youngest teams this year, and with the retirement of David Savard and the departures of Joel Armia and Christian Dvorak, it will be up to the team’s young veterans to make up for any loss of leadership.

Particularly for Savard, who occupied an important place in the dressing room and was a great help to the club’s young players, including Lane Hutson in his first season, as we learn in an article by Marc Antoine Godin published on Radio-Canada.

However, the young defenseman isn’t worried about the leadership issue and believes that players like Nick Suzuki, but also Cole Caufield, are ready to take on this role and that both lead by example.

If we’re more accustomed to hearing the captain’s name among the team’s young leaders, it’s also good to see Caufield taking on this role more and more with the club. The American will already be entering his fifth full season in Montreal, and he’s a veteran among the organization’s core of young players.

And beyond leadership, Suzuki and Caufield are also role models for Hutson.

[content-ads] What’s more, although he’ll be playing in only his second NHL season, it wouldn’t be surprising if Hutson also began to take on more of a role in the team’s dressing room.

Without being a veritable verité, his actions on the ice and his role with the Habs give him a certain say, and Suzuki says he’s surprised the young defenseman wasn’t invited to Team USA’s practice camp for the upcoming Olympics.

Although Team USA boasts an excellent defensive brigade, the captain believes that Hutson at least deserved an invitation among the many players taking part in the camp. Suzuki hopes that this will serve as motivation for his teammate as he embarks on the coming season.

However, the 21-year-old defenseman isn’t too worried about it and prefers to focus on the upcoming season and hope to relive the playoff experience.[spacer title=’Overtime’] – Verdict draw in Toronto.
