Matthew Tkachuk still hasn’t decided whether to undergo surgery this summer

In 2025-26, the Florida Panthers will attempt to win a third Stanley Cup in a row. The club has enjoyed a ton of success over the past three years… which coincides nicely with the arrival of Matthew Tkachuk. The club has reached the Grand Finals in each of Tkachuk’s three seasons in Florida, after all. That said, we know that Tkachuk plays a physical style… and that’s why he accumulates injuries. Last year, for example, he was injured during the 4 Nations Confrontation… and we wondered whether he’d be able to play in the playoffs. In the end, he made it… but we knew there was a good chance he’d need surgery over the summer. What we’re learning today is that not only has the forward not had surgery yet, he doesn’t even know if he will.He still hasn’t made up his mind.

[content-ads]According to Tkachuk, surgery would mean missing between two and three months of action. So there’s a world in which we won’t see him until December, for example… or even January, if he waits until the start of the season to make his decision.Remember that February is when the Olympics take place… and it’s safe to assume that Tkachuk wants to make sure he’s able to play then.If he hasn’t had surgery yet, it’s probably because the veteran believes he’s capable of recovering from his injuries without having to go under the knife. But the longer he waits, the more games he’ll miss… and that’s not ideal for the Panthers. On the other hand, as long as he’s fresh and available for the playoffs, that’s fine with the Panthers. In Sunrise, the real season starts in April,so we should have some news in the next few weeks, but we’ll have to see when Tkachuk undergoes surgery if he opts for this option. Benefit match: David Reinbacher keeps up form against Vinzenz Rohrer’s team

Since David Reinbacher was selected by the Habs in 2023, the kid hasn’t played a ton of hockey. Thegood news is that when he does play, he’s solid… but he still needs to play games if he’s to become a big part of the Habs’ blue line in the long term,so the 2025-26 season will be a big one for Reinbacher. He’ll want to get to camp and prove that he deserves to start the year in Montreal… even if it’s going to be difficult with the arrival of Noah Dobson. But for now, the kid is preparing as best he can… and today he played in a benefit game in Zurich, where he played on the second pair of defensemen for a top-quality team.

[content-ads]Obviously, Reinbacher’s team was far superior to Rohrer’s… and logic prevailed: the defender’s team won.The “Fiala selection” (Kevin Fiala organized the event) won 10-3.

Ofcourse, you really have to take it and leave it with these results. The guys are there mostly for fun and to keep fit… but also for a good cause. It’s worth noting that soccer legend Petr Cech saw some action as goalkeeper for the “Fiala selection”. For those who don’t know, he played a few years as a hockey goalkeeper following his soccer career.

So we’ll see what’s in store for Reinbacher (and Rohrer) over the next few weeks, but the defenseman will be especially spied on in camp. The best we can wish for him is to avoid injury this season. Because he really, really needs a full season, whether in Montreal or Laval.[spacer title=’Overtime’]- The Habs were never featured on the cover of the NHL game. P.K. Subban was a member of the Predators when he was featured.

– Ah well.

Stanley Cup: no, the Canadiens don’t have “just two years” to win it

The Canadiens have been rebuilding for several years now. The club has picked up a ton of talented youngsters… and the future is looking brighter and brighter in Montreal. At least, it hasn’t for a long time.Because, after all, the club’s core is clearly established. Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovský, Ivan Demidov, Lane Hutson, Noah Dobson and Kaiden Guhle form an extremely solid young base… so, in many people’s eyes, the Habs are likely to be competitive for a long time to come… but today, on BPM Sports, MC Gilles (who was on Richard Labbé’s show) had this to say:

The Stanley Cup for the Habs is two years away or nothing.

MC Gilles

[content-ads]Basically, his argument rests on one point: the fact that in two years, Lane Hutson and Ivan Demidov will no longer be on their entry-level contracts. Both will get huge salary increases, and that will handcuff the Habs a bit.Except… that’s not really the case.In a year’s time, for example, Carey Price ($10.5M) and Patrik Laine ($8.7M) will no longer be on the Habs payroll. There’s a world in which Laine signs a new contract with the Canadiens, but the chances of him earning the same salary are pretty slim. Then, in two years’ time (when Demidov’s second contract begins), Brendan Gallagher ($6.5M) and Josh Anderson ($5.5M) will be off the club’s books. Andwhen you add in the fact that the cap will skyrocket over the next few years, that means that Hutson and Demidov’s contracts… won’t really be a problem. Because, after all, in a few years, the Canadiens’ core players (excluding Hutson and Demidov) will have on average the same impact on the Habs’ payroll as Josh Anderson did this year.

Obviously, in a world where the Habs are capable of being competitive within two years, having Hutson and/or Demidov on an entry-level contract gives the club more flexibility, no one’s questioning that. But to think that the Canadiens won’t be able to compete once Hutson and Demidov sign their second contracts simply doesn’t hold water. In fact, there’s an even greater chance that the club’s window will really open at that point, when the core will have matured quite a bit.[spacer title=’Overtime’]- Joel Kiviranta signs new contract with the Avalanche.

– Great idea.

Sun Life Pro-Am: Steven Stamkos and Zachary Bolduc will be present in Quebec City

The 17th edition of the Sun Life Pro-Am, a hockey event organized in support of children’s health and well-being, will be held at the Centre Vidéotron in Quebec City on August 14, and the 2025 edition will pay tribute to the Quebec Nordiques, who left the NHL 30 years ago.

And for the occasion, a number of important NHL players and alumni will be in attendance, including Québécois players David Savard, Marc-Édouard Vlasic, Philip Danault, Mavrik Bourque and two newcomers to the Montreal Canadiens, Joe Veleno and Zachary Bolduc.

Jonathan Marchessault will also be present, and his presence is all the more important as it will have enabled the arrival of two of his teammates with the Nashville Predators, Steven Stamkos and Roman Josi.

[content-ads] These are two very big names in the National Hockey League, and it’s a nice gesture on their part to have agreed to follow their teammate Marchessault in this Québécois event.

Stamkos and Josi will be present at the Centre Videotron, wearing jerseys in the colors of the Quebec Nordiques, which should make for some great images:

“Steven Stamkos in a Nordiques uniform, I think it’s going to be a flash!

Patrick Couture, one of the event’s organizers

Please note that next Thursday, there will be two games, one at 6 p.m. featuring several alumni, including Patrice Bergeron and Simon Gagné, and another at 7:15 p.m. featuring the NHL players named above.

I’ll leave you with Mikaël Lalancette’s excellent article for all the details and names of the players who’ll be there. Getting back to the Habs players who’ll be there, well, in Bolduc’s case, it’ll be a reunion with the Quebec City crowd, where he won the triple crown with the Rempart de Québec in 2023, so it’ll be a great moment for him.

Note that many tickets are still on sale, so here’s the link for those interested.I’ll also leave you the detailed description of the event right here.spacer title=’En Rafale’] – It’s really beautiful to see!

– Very cool.

– It’s going badly.

Connor McDavid: 3-4-year contract extension to be signed by practice camp

All that’s missing from the career of the best player in the world today, Connor McDavid, is the ultimate accomplishment of winning the Stanley Cup. After losing two finals in a row to the Florida Panthers, 28-year-old McDavid may decide to reconsider his commitment to the Edmonton Oilers, especially with only one season remaining on his contract.

Moreover, with no contract extension in his case, one wonders if #97 is thinking about his future. It’s a possibility that he decides to leave the Oilers, but rest assured, Oilers fans, it’s not likely to happen.

On the contrary, the latest news is that a contract extension should be signed by training camp, according to Jim Matheson, who has covered the Oilers for countless years.

[content-ads] Indeed, Matheson explains in one of his recent articles for the Edmonton Sun that it’s highly likely that the matter will be settled in the coming weeks.

What’s more, the journalist reports that there will be no bickering or squabbling between the two sides in the negotiations for this next contract, as McDavid will decide everything, and the Oilers will simply say thank you.

He’ll decide on the number of years and the salary, and the Oilers will accept directly. We also have an idea of what McDavid’s contract, which will start in 2026-2027 when signed, will look like. According to Matheson, #97 will sign a 3-4-year contract with an annual value hovering around $18m. [content-ads] McDavid would therefore not sign a long-term deal, in order to keep himself a certain freedom to leave the Oilers in a few years’ time if things haven’t gone according to plan.

If he signs a four-year extension, McDavid will be 33 when his contract expires in five years’ time, so he could decide to continue his career elsewhere. But for now, there’s no question of McDavid leaving his good friend Leon Draisaitl, whom he joined on his honeymoon, alone in Edmonton. The two are very close, and Draisaitl has signed a new eight-year deal at $15 million a year.

In short, McDavid will be with the Oilers for a few more seasons, it’s all but assured. It’s only a matter of time before we know what his next contract will be, so we can forget for the moment the folly of a Los Angeles podcast, which believes and dreams that McDavid will follow in Wayne Gretzky’s footsteps by making the jump from the Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Absolutely incredible.

– Indeed. Very ordinary of him.

If the Bruins want to trade Pavel Zacha, the Canadiens have to call Boston

Where are the Bruins headed these days? The current administration may say they want to make the playoffs and win, but for the past few months (since the 2025 trade deadline), they’ve been acting as if a rebuild were on the way. It’s like a club that doesn’t want to admit to itself that hard times are ahead.Which means that, if need be, this team could listen to what other organizations have to offer in terms of transactions for some of the club’s established players. Of the lot? Pavel Zacha. His name isn’t currently circulating as such. But Jimmy Murphy brought it up on yesterday’s Sick Podcast when asked about a potential option he sees among the top-6 centers who could change addresses. He mentions that this is speculation on his part. But when hipsters speculate, it (sometimes) hides something bigger than a simple idea out of nowhere.[content-ads]We can have our doubts about whether Zacha is better on the wing than at center. However, if the Bruins really want young assets for Zacha, the Canadiens must be thinking about filling their second-center spot, even if a trade between the two rivals would be special.Zacha is 28 years old and under contract for two more years. The sixth overall pick of the 2015 auction earns an average of $4.75 million a year, and at his best, he produces like a second center.

(Credit: Hockey DB)

Once again: we don’t know if the Bruins really want to say goodbye to him. Nor do we know if the Canadiens have what it takes to pay the Boston club to get Zacha, who can say no to a deal with eight clubs. But that’s something to keep in mind, isn’t it? [spacer title=’Overtime’]- Of note.

– Well done.

– Interesting.

– Hey boy.

Mason McTavish: how do the Canadiens compare with other teams?

The Canadiens are keeping an eye on Mason McTavish. Jimmy Murphy of RG Media wrote about it recently. The Canadiens, like the Hurricanes, want to be kept in the loop, but in reality, they may have a slightly slimmer chance than the Red Wings… if McTavish is ever traded, that is.Why is that? Because, if McTavish is ever traded, there are two important aspects to consider: the price to be paid to the Ducks and the price to be paid to the player. How does the Canadiens compare to other teams in all this? In terms of the price to be paid to the Ducks, we know that the Ducks would like a young, first-rate right-handed defenseman. For the Red Wings, that would mean Axel Sandin-Pellikka. What about the Canadiens? I don’t see the Canadiens trading Reinbacher. Jimmy Murphy and Tony Marinaro, who chatted about the subject yesterday on the Sick Podcast, didn’t say anything to lead us to believe that the Habs want to do that either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joueqjlyv6g [content-ads]I’m not surprised. Reinbacher vs. McTavish would be like robbing Paul to pay John. The Canadiens have a lot of faith in Reinbacher, and I don’t see the club giving up on the project for a #2 center, no matter how young and good he is in Anaheim. Why shouldn’t the Red Wings? Because time is running out in Detroit, where Steve Yzerman’s plan isn’t working. Bringing in short-term reinforcements could help save his job. Because yes, even though he’s a legend, he’s under more and more pressure, according to Murphy..

[content-ads]And the other aspect is money. Even if the Canadiens, who could get rid of Carey Price’s contract in September, want to get McTavish, they can’t offer him too big a contract right now. The Habs are currently $4.8 million over the cap.

(Credit: Cap Wages)

Remember that a club can exceed the salary cap by 10% during the off-season. The cap is currently $95.5 million, which means that a club can have a cap of $105.05 million during the summer. The Canadiens still have $4.72 million left. But…[content-ads]

  • Mason McTavish, who wants a long-term contract (unlike the Ducks, who want a bridge contract), would ask for more money than $4.72 M per year.
  • Despite the potential departure of Carey Price, the Canadiens would have to comply with the $95.5M cap once the regular season begins.

All of which means that, while it’s not impossible to imagine the Habs trimming the fat elsewhere, the arrival of McTavish represents, in the short term, a huge challenge.Especially since the Ducks aren’t keen to trade him. Andwith the Ducks’ wage bill and the Canadiens’ lack of monetary freedom, don’t hold your breath for a hostile offer sheet from Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton. To be continued [spacer title=’en rafale’]- What a lack of respect.

– She won’t be playing in Cincinnati.

– Wow.

– Of note in Toronto.

– Doesn’t change much for those who listen to hockey in French, anyway.

Victoria Mboko is champion of the National Bank Open in Montreal

For those of you who follow tennis, you’ve probably noticed that Victoria Mboko is a very talented player. The Congolese-born Canadian has been surprising everyone at the National Bank Open since the start of the women’s tournament in Montreal. In the round of 16, Mboko faced the world’s second-ranked racket, Coco Gauff. She won easily in two sets, 6-4, 6-1. She also eliminated Elena Rybakina, ranked 12th in the world, and tonight, in the grand final, she had to defeat Naomi Osaka. The young tennis player, only 18 years old, finally beat Osaka in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Incredible.Mboko became the first Canadian to win the OBN in Montreal. Need I remind you that she’s only 18 years old? This victory perfectly highlights the start of a career. And what better way for Mboko to break into the world top-25 than with this victory.

[content-ads]Interestingly, as RDS reports in this piece, Osaka was Mboko’s childhood idol. When it comes to fairytales, this is one of them.

Unfortunately, Osaka didn’t do a very good job, not even taking the time to congratulate Mboko…

While it’s a shame for the Canadiens, since she’s her idol, Mboko can leave with a smile on her face and the pride of having defeated all those big names in her path. Watch the victory trade below, and more importantly, the young player’s reaction.

Osaka seemed unbeatable recently. She appeared confident and few believed Mboko could beat her, but with what she’s shown us throughout the tournament, she couldn’t be overlooked. Leading the final set 5-1, she trailed 40-15, but pulled off a sublime shot to start the comeback.

No, but, what an incredible shot.

Decidedly, this win in front of Canadian fans will do her a world of good and will clearly give her a lot of confidence going forward. The way she was playing, this certainly isn’t her last title. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – These are good choices.

No, Max Pacioretty would not fit in Montreal

The Canadiens have been on the move this summer, but not via the free agent market, as both Noah Dobson and Zachary Bolduc have been acquired via trade. Noah Dobson and Zachary Bolduc were both acquired via trade, while Kent Hughes’ summer is not over, as his team is still linked to several names, including Max Pacioretty. The former Habs Captain

Michael Traikos put the question to guest Drew Shore and Shore said yes, he thinks he could be an important addition. He reminded people that he can still be useful to a team.Ryan Kennedy believes that Pacioretty is the Dead Pool of hockey, because despite all the injuries, he always comes back in top form.In 37 regular-season games, Pacio had 13 points, and in the playoffs, he had eight in 11 games. Could he be a good fit in Montreal? Personally, I don’t see his usefulness, and I don’t see how it could work, seeing as how it ended the first stint [content-ads]. I understand that it’s not the same direction, but anyway, the attack already looks well-stocked.Caufield-Suzuki-SlafkovskyLaine-Dach-DemidovBolduc-Newhook-AndersonBlais-Evans-GallagherWhere could we insert the former Habs captain into this starting lineup?

“Alex Newhook is a fourth-line player”

In 82 games this season, Alex Newhook collected 26 points, including 15 goals. In the absence of Kirby Dach, Newhook played almost exclusively on the second line. He’s not a bad player, but he was put in a difficult position. In 2025-2026, if there are no injuries, he’ll probably be on a third line, but Eric Macramalla would put him on a fourth line. In any case, he said on The Shaun Starr Show that he’s a fourth-line player.Macarmalla likes his speed, but he believes his legs are too fast for the rest of his body. He is, in his opinion, a turnaround machine, especially in precarious zones. This is one of the reasons why he believes Newhook is a fast fourth-line player who can offer good flashes from time to time and be a good “F1” [content-ads] Well, the fourth line seems a little harsh on him, but it’s true that Newhook doesn’t have the hands and vision to match his skating stroke. It’s a shame, because he’s got the speed.

After 26 points in 2024-2025 and an average playing time of just over 15 minutes, could the center eclipse that mark next season? Yes, he’ll be better surrounded, but let’s not forget that he won’t have the opportunities and ice time of last season. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – They’ve got quite a club.

– What do you think?

– Sidney Crosby is exceptional. [The Athletic]– And certainly not as an outfielder.

– Too bad.
