Top-5 : Ilya Sorokin credited with a goal thanks to Steven Stamkos

It was a very big hockey day yesterday in the National Hockey League, as we had the last big Saturday of hockey before the March 7 trade deadline,

And through the trades of Ryan Lindgren, Gustav Nyquist, and Seth Jones, we had some very nice highlights.

Here’s a summary of them.

1. Ilya Sorokin gets a goal thanks to Steven Stamkos

The game between the New York Islanders and the Nashville Predators gave us one of the most unusual goals in history yesterday.

In fact, as the Islanders were leading 6-4 at the end of the third period, the Preds pulled their goalie to try to close the gap.

The Preds were shooting from everywhere, and Ilya Sorokin made several great saves, including one that ended up on Steven Stamkos’ stick.

And that’s when he made a mistake, as he tried to pass the puck to his defenseman, he sent it into his own empty net.

The goal was therefore credited to Ilya Sorokin since he was the last to touch the puck on the Islanders’ side.

In short, a very funny moment that allowed the Islanders to go get a big 7-4 win over the Preds.

Sorokin even took the opportunity to tease his good friend Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers’ goalie, saying he knew he would score a goal before him.

2. A referee controversy ruins the end of the Stadium Series game

It was yesterday that the outdoor game took place in Columbus, as the Red Wings visited the Blue Jackets.

Early in the season, this game wasn’t exciting anyone, as it was expected to be an unimportant game between two non-playoff teams, but the two teams made it very important since they currently occupy the two wild-card spots in the East.

So it was a four-point game outdoors for both teams, which we had a very close game.

Unfortunately, it all ended in controversy, as Justin Danforth scored the winning goal for the Blue Jackets after clearly hitting Simon Edvinsson in the face with his stick.

We can clearly see that Danforth gets away after hitting Edvinsson, but it wasn’t called by the referees.

It’s a shame, and it’s frustrating for the Red Wings and their fans, but in the end, this 5-3 win for the Blue Jackets is good for the Montreal Canadiens.

The Canadiens moved within three points of the Red Wings and a playoff spot with their win last night.

3. A hamburger thrown on the ice during Andrew Hammond’s night in Ottawa

Do you remember the “Hamburglar”?

It’s the nickname that was given to Andrew Hammond, the Ottawa Senators’ goalie who carried the team to the playoffs in 2015 with 20 wins in 24 games after his recall from the American Hockey League.

Well, yesterday night, he was honored in Ottawa, as he was invited to drop the puck for a face-off.

And on the occasion, a Senators fan threw a famous hamburger on the ice, and Hammond picked it up.

In short, a beautiful moment that reminds us of a whole story from ten years ago.

As for the game itself, the Senators ended their five-game losing streak with a 5-3 win.

And during the game, Tim Stützle again embarrassed hockey by renewing his title as the best diver in the NHL by diving without being hooked.

Really pathetic…

4. Connor McDavid reaches 700 assists

The captain of the Edmonton Oilers already has his name all over the NHL history books, and he added to it yesterday night by becoming the 3rd fastest player to reach the 700 assist milestone.

He achieved the feat in 699 games, with only Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux being faster.

It’s crazy to think that even if we removed all of McDavid’s goals, he would still be a point-per-game player.

In short, it’s quite an achievement by McDavid in the Oilers’ 3-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

He’s really sensational, and he showed it again last night, including once against Jacob Slavin.

5. Matvei Michkov’s shootout goal

The Philadelphia Flyers won a big game last night, as they beat the powerful Winnipeg Jets 2-1 in a shootout.

These are two huge points for the Flyers, as they remain in the playoff hunt.

And let’s say they can thank Matvei Michkov, who scored the winning goal in a brilliant way in the shootout.

First sequence of four wins for the CH this season

After a win against the Sharks on Thursday, the Canadiens were back in action tonight in Buffalo.

Montreal wanted to win a fourth straight game for the first time this season.

Here are the lineups for the occasion:

No goals were scored in the first period.

In the second, the goals started to be scored.

First, Cole Caufield scored his 29th goal of the season. This is a personal record for him.

Another point for Patrik Laine on the sequence, who has been playing well since the return from the all-star break.

In his last four games, he has six points.

However, the Sabres replied twice to that goal.

First, Alex Tuch created the equalizer.

Then, Jiri Kulich gave the first lead to his team in the game.

In turn, Montreal scored two goals.

First, Josh Anderson brought everyone back to square one.

Andy has become the 11th player on the CH to score 10 goals this season. Montreal is the club with the most scorers with at least 10 goals this season.

Before the end of the period, Alex Newhook, with less than three seconds left, gave the visitors the lead again.

3-2 after 40 minutes of play.

The Sabres played much better in the third period, but they never had any real chances to thwart Jakub Dobes.

Jake Evans sealed the outcome of the meeting in an empty net. He is one goal and one point away from tying his career highs in both categories.

Final score: 4-2 Canadiens, who win a fourth straight game for the first time this season.

And with this victory, Montreal finally gains ground on the last playoff spot, now just three points away.

Martin St-Louis’ team will face the Sabres again on Monday, this time at the Bell Centre.

Overtime

— Too bad for Connor Hughes, but the Rocket still wins.

— He didn’t let himself get intimidated.

— Will he be traded?

— Well said, Félix.

— Christian Dvorak gained some value: he played a whole game.

— Yes.

Contract extension: Mikko Rantanen should not make a decision before Friday

The Carolina Hurricanes may be in a playoff position and could make a good run in the series, but the team could still be a seller at the trade deadline.

Why? Because there’s a certain Mikko Rantanen who isn’t unanimous in Carolina. With the Canes, the Finn has only five points in nine games. We saw him against the Canadiens at the Bell Center: he seems uninterested in the game.

And now Elliotte Friedman has brought some information that will complicate the file even more. According to the informant, the forward shouldn’t make any decision about his future before the trade deadline (Friday, March 7).

So, the Hurricanes’ GM is facing a big dilemma: trade Rantanen or keep him, try to win the Stanley Cup and/or sign him, and potentially lose him for nothing.

Because if he doesn’t sign before Friday, Carolina could lose him for nothing on July 1st. Let’s say that wouldn’t be ideal…

Eric Tulsky paid Martin Necas, Jack Drury, and two draft picks for the Finn’s services (and Taylor Hall)… That’s a lot, and it wouldn’t be worth it for just twenty games from the player.

Of course, if Carolina wins the Stanley Cup, it would be worth it, but for now, we’re far from that possibility…

Meanwhile, Necas has 13 points in 12 games with Nathan MacKinnon and the Avalanche. Drury, on the other hand, has more goals than Rantanen.

In a hurry

– The Blue Jackets win the away game.

– Nice.

– Why am I not surprised?

Contract extension for Jake Evans: Renaud Lavoie still believes in it

The Canadian will not have managed to agree with Jake Evans this week. Does this mean he’s leaving?

It remains to be seen.

The one who has only one goal in his last 23 games has not been contributing offensively lately, but defensively, I have nothing to say. As the days go by, the chances of him leaving the city are increasing. However, Renaud Lavoie still believes in a contract extension. This is what he mentioned during the pre-game show on TVA Sports.

In recent days, Tony Marinaro provided details on Evans’ demands and according to him, the center is asking for five years/four million dollars per season. Looking at the comparisons across the NHL (Jean-Gabriel Pageau $5M, Alex Kerfoot $3.5M, and Dakota Joshua $3.25M), it feels like four million is not necessarily too much to ask for.

But in the latest news, the two camps are very far from an agreement.

Maybe the negotiations will be more intense after the trade deadline (March 7). Kent Hughes may just be waiting to see what other teams could offer for his fourth-line player.

Still during the pre-game show on TVA Sports, Maxim Lapierre brought up a good point about Evans. The former CH player, who wants to keep him, said that all teams want a player like the 71 in their team. So, why not keep him and not look for another one for four or five years?

The entire panel of the show wants to keep Evans in the city. The entire panel, except for Félix Séguin, who, after his argument, mentioned that he would focus on describing the game, because “that’s what he does best”.

Will you give Jake what he wants, considering that the salary cap will increase by several million dollars in the coming years?

In a nutshell

– It’s nice to see.

– What do you think of the transaction?

– Still.

– Good news.

– Great.

Christian Dvorak and David Savard : “I would be surprised if they were traded”

The Canadian is in Buffalo tonight and including this game, there are only three left before the trade deadline (Friday, March 7).

Naturally, at the CH, we will have to keep an eye on Jake Evans, Joel Armia, Christian Dvorak, and David Savard, all of whom are unrestricted free agents.

Who will leave and who will stay? According to Renaud Lavoie, Savard and Dvorak will stay. At least, he would be surprised if they were traded. That’s what he mentioned during the first period.

Several teams could be in the running for Savard.

After all, even if he has slowed down, he remains a good defensive defenseman, and on a third pair, a contending team could acquire him at a good price.

But it’s not at any price that Kent Hughes will get rid of his Quebec defender. After all, for a fourth-round pick or worse, it’s just as well to keep him and help the team in its playoff run. And maybe at a good price, he could stay in Montreal for next season.

He’s a good veteran, a good teammate, and a guy who doesn’t hurt anyone. At worst, he would be the seventh defenseman next year… He won’t ask for the moon.

As for Dvorak, I don’t think he’ll find a taker before next Friday either. If so, Hughes risks keeping part of his salary (he can still do so for a player until June 30, 2025).

A Dvorak transaction with 25% of his salary for a fifth-round pick is the best Montreal could have, in my opinion.

The center earns $4.45 million until the end of the season, and the problem is not keeping salary or trading it for a distant draft pick, but rather team spirit. Indeed, he is a good teammate and a good friend to Cole Caufield, among others, and without Kirby Dach and potentially Jake Evans, Dvo would be important for the team’s center line to make sense…

In a hurry

– He can’t wait to come to North America.

– What a tweet!

– Wow haha.

– Big trade in the NFL.

– His counterpart also did well.

Jake Evans has one goal in his last 23 games

When thinking of Jake Evans, one thinks of a guy who is mainly there to excel in a support role. And once again this year, he accomplished this mission with brilliance, being a force in several areas, including being strong when his team is at a numerical disadvantage.

He is one of Martin St-Louis’s trusted players, and for good reason: he takes pressure off the shoulders of his teammates.

That being said, what is particular this season is that the forward has found a scoring touch. After all, at the beginning of 2025, he already had 10 goals, a very solid harvest for a guy who doesn’t even play on the power play.

However, what’s noticeable two months later is that Evans’ scoring touch has… visibly disappeared.

In fact, the Canadiens’ forward has only one goal since December 31. That’s a sequence of 23 games.

At the end of December, Evans had scored a goal in five consecutive games. He was scoring on about 30% of his shots, a ridiculously high percentage that was bound to come down… and it has come down spectacularly since.

It’s interesting to see that a good part of this drought occurred during the absence of Emil Heineman, his linemate.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Evans has become useless, far from it. He continues to be an important piece of Martin St-Louis’s team… but it’s still true that if we extrapolate this sample of 23 games over a 82-game season, we’re talking about a pace of less than four goals per season.

And in the context where he is reportedly asking for $20 million over five years, that doesn’t look very good, as good as he is defensively.

But despite all I’ve just said, I still think the following: the Canadiens wouldn’t make a bad decision if they didn’t trade Jake Evans before the trade deadline. I’m not saying Kent Hughes must absolutely keep him if he’s offered the moon for Evans, but the latter, even without a long-term contract as of yet, has value in town that’s superior to another draft pick.

In the best-case scenario, time will bring Evans and the Canadiens closer together in negotiations (especially since Evans’ recent offensive drought shouldn’t give his agent many arguments right now), and the two parties will agree on a long-term deal to keep a loved teammate and a support player developed by the CH in town. In the worst-case scenario, he will have been a “rental player” who helped compensate for the loss of Kirby Dach by not putting too much on the shoulders of the Tricolore’s young players.

– The better he is, the less pressure the CH has to sign Evans.

– A serious audition for Owen Beck.

– Wow!

– The emotions we’re experiencing right now.

– What a machine.

– David Pastrnak in 2025: 22 games, 19 goals, 19 assists, leading the NHL in goals and points. Even with the slow start, he’s still on pace for 101 points.

– Gary Bettman wants an outdoor game in Utah.

Bettman reiterates the NHL’s working with Utah on getting an outdoor game in the not-too-distant future.

Away game: Blue Jackets players arrive dressed “like Johnny Gaudreau”

Since the sad passing of the Gaudreau brothers last summer, the hockey world has made sure to honor the memory of the two men as best as possible. The family has touched a ton of people in the community, and we don’t want to forget the two men.

Even recently, at the 4 Nations Confrontation, the fans chanted “Johnny Hockey” at the end of the game during the final. It was a beautiful moment.

But of course, in Columbus, they’re making a special effort in that regard. Johnny Gaudreau played with the Blue Jackets, after all (he had decided to sign there as a free agent), and he was extremely loved in Ohio.

The club even invited his mom on the team’s mothers’ trip this week.

And today, as the Blue Jackets face the Red Wings in an away game, the team had an excellent idea: the guys decided to all dress up “like Johnny Gaudreau”.

And with the Gaudreau family leading the players’ entrance into the stadium, it makes for some really nice images.

The players are all dressed the same way, and instead of just wearing Gaudreau’s jersey, the guys decided to dress like Gaudreau usually dresses in everyday life.

Boone Jenner, the team captain, notes that they were dressed with “Johnny’s signature outfit”. I like it.

Let’s remember that the game between the Jackets and the Wings will start at 6 pm tonight at Ohio Stadium, the football stadium of Ohio State University (or Ohio State). We’re talking about a stadium that can accommodate… over 100,000 fans.

This will be something.

That being said, seeing Johnny Gaudreau and his family being honored in this way during an away game, it shows once again how well the Blue Jackets (and the rest of the league) do things.

Hats off.

In rafale

– When Steven Stamkos gives a goal… to Ilya Sorokin.

– Nice gesture.

– The Lightning is on fire.

– Really?

Matvei Michkov: since the resumption, he is the only one who is ahead of Nick Suzuki in the NHL

Matvei Michkov’s season in Philadelphia has been, shall we say, quite particular so far. The talented forward has had some very good moments… but he has also had a few run-ins with John Tortorella.

And before the Four Nations Showdown break, Michkov looked like a guy who was struggling. Points were no longer coming easily, his ice time was decreasing, and he looked like a guy who needed a break.

The big question, then, was how he would bounce back from all this… and the answer is very, very encouraging. In fact, since the resumption of activities, Michkov has played three games… and he has amassed three goals and eight points during this sequence.

This is exactly the same production as Nick Suzuki… and the two guys are leading the NHL in points per game since the resumption. Clayton Keller (9) and Jason Robertson (8) are also racking up points, but they have played one more game than Suzuki and Michkov.

And since the month was shortened, seeing him have such a strong sequence means that Michkov has been named Rookie of the Month in the NHL.

Of course, for the Flyers, seeing the young forward come back strong like this is encouraging. He seems to have developed very good chemistry with Sean Couturier, and it shows in Michkov’s production.

After all, in Montreal, we can see how unstoppable Suzuki has been for three games. In Philadelphia, we see the same thing… from a rookie player.

The sample size is obviously very small, so we need to be cautious. That being said, it doesn’t change the fact that with his recent successful sequence, Michkov has returned to the top of the Calder Trophy race.

Because after all, he has caught up with Lane Hutson in first place among rookie scorers in the NHL this season.

(Credit: Screenshot/NHL.com)

With Macklin Celebrini continuing to play great hockey (except when Cole Caufield has his say) and Dustin Wolf still solid in the Flames’ net, we really have a four-way race for the Calder Trophy right now… and this race could go on until the very end of the regular season.

But if Michkov continues to score points at an incredible rate, the other rookies will have their work cut out to keep up.

In a rush

– Talking about young Russian forwards.

– Alex Ovechkin’s 884th career goal.

– Gustav Nyquist officially joins the Wild. The Predators, who retain half of the salary, get a second-round pick in 2026 in return.

– Well done.

Josh Anderson will face the Sabres tonight

It’s been a while that Josh Anderson has been playing while injured. The Canadiens’ forward, who is a source of inspiration for the team right now, is clearly bothered by something (his back?), but he’s still showing up to play.

He hardly ever practices and seems to get re-injured during games, but he still finds a way to contribute.

We were wondering if Anderson, who traveled to Buffalo with the team, would face the Sabres tonight…

And in the end, we have the answer: he will be there.

Anderson spoke to the media today, a pretty clear sign that he would be playing tonight… and in an article by RDS, it was confirmed that he will be in uniform.

More details to come…
