Top-4: “Nobody cares (about my performance), we’re all going to die”

Last night in the NHL, there were only four games on the schedule.

Here are the results and highlights:

1. “Nobody cares (about my performance), we’re all going to die” – Devin Cooley

In Buffalo, the NHL’s worst team was visiting.

The Flames visited the Sabres and downgraded them at home. Final score: 6-2.

It was Devin Cooley’s first win of the season.

He was sensational, stopping 28 of 30 shots.

In fact, he’s the NHL goalie with the best save percentage.

After the game, he was very honest with reporters.

He said that people don’t care about his performance and that everyone’s going to die anyway.

I guess that’s one way of looking at it…

2. This is one of the reasons you won’t be going to the Olympics, Evan

Evan Bouchard is a good player on the power play.

Other than that, he doesn’t bring much to the table, in my opinion. Defensively, he’s a big zero, and he showed that again yesterday. Ryan Leonard totally undermined him.

This is one of the reasons why he shouldn’t participate in the Olympics and represent Canada.

Playing against the best players in the world, his defensive shortcomings will become even more apparent.

As far as the game was concerned, Washington made short work of the Oilers. It all started early with a goal from Aliaksei Protas in the opening minutes.

Alex Ovechkin continued his streak of games with at least one goal with three.

He now has 904 career goals.

Darnell Nurse scored two goals in the first half.

But obviously, it wasn’t enough to keep his team in the game.

Final score: 7-4 Caps.

3. 42 saves for Jesper Wallstedt

The Wild got hot, but held their own against the Hurricanes.

Despite a great comeback by Carolina, Minnesota won in a shootout to improve its record to 5-0-1 over the last six games.

Thanks to a 42-save performance from Jesper Wallstedt.

He was sublime throughout the game, but here he stole a goal from Andrei Svechnikov.

Afterwards, Matt Boldy scored the winning goal in the shootout.

With 1:05 to go in the game, the visitors forced overtime.

In the victory, Mats Zuccarello scored his first goal of the season.

Finally.

4. Already a 10th win for Lukas Dostal

In the final game of the evening, the Ducks hosted the Boston Bruins.

With a 4-3 victory, Ducks goaltender Lukas Dostal has reached the plateau of 10 wins this season already.

He was one of the main contributors to this victory.

He stopped 36 shots, including this one from close range.

Anaheim led 3-1 into the game, but Boston never gave up and came from behind to tie the game.

But with just under four minutes left in the game, Ian Moore scored his second of the season. Final score: 4-3.

Habs need a spark: Adam Engstrom deserves a callback

The Habs are still searching for their identity, especially on the defensive side of the puck. With the long-term injury to Kaiden Guhle, the Habs’ six defensemen have no support.

This leads to a lot of mistakes and inconsistent performances.

The last two games have been better, but we’re far from satisfied. There are also problems scoring goals, and Lane Hutson seems to be the only one capable of generating them.

Which begs the question: when will Adam Engstrom be recalled? BPM Sports host Anthony Marcotte posed the question on X a few hours ago.

As Marcotte describes it, Engstrom is the Rocket’s best defenseman, but he doesn’t think the Habs are in a position to give him ice time right now.

I beg to differ. It’s not like the Habs have a great defensive brigade right now. Yes, all six are NHL-calibre, but it’s not true that the unit couldn’t be better.

The arrival of a player like Engstrom could ignite a competition that could benefit everyone. Jayden Struble and Arber Xhekaj are very comfortable in their roles, perhaps a little too comfortable.

Engstrom has three goals and five assists in 16 games. He added a gem tonight, scoring on a superb run. Unfortunately for him, the Rocket lost.

He almost scored a second with a beautiful maneuver.

The Swedish defenseman could add some nice mobility wouldn’t hurt on a third pair, especially in the hopes of reviving the Habs offensively. I also don’t buy the theory that he wouldn’t be useful playing less than ten minutes. Because of Matheson’s presence, Engstrom can’t come in through the front door.

Overtime

– Interesting question.

– It won’t be easy tomorrow night.

– Tough loss for the Islanders.

VIDEO: Samuel Montembeault’s mask for his McDonald’s ads is sick!

Samuel Montembeault is the Canadiens’ McJoueur of the Year.

The goalie has his poutine named after him, and I’m not sure how good it is. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet… and maybe that’s because I’m not the world’s biggest poutine fan. But hey. I’m escaping.

In his ads with McDonald’s, we see Monty dressed in his goalie gear. It’s a little less noticeable, but the details on the helmet(the work of Jordon Bourgeault) he’s wearing are simply magnificent.

The result is well done.

You can see fries with bits of chicken and bacon… but you can also see the McDonald’s logo all over it. The straps that tie his helmet back are made of bacon… it’s sick.

Honestly, it’s a really special creation:

The attention to detail on the mask is great.

It looks different, but I’d like to see Monty wear it for an official National League game.

I mean, if it would help him regain his confidence and get back on the winning track…

All kidding aside, it takes talent to make a mask like that. It must have taken hours and hours of work to create such a piece of equipment, and the video above shows just how well done it is.

Congratulations!

Jakub Dobes: expect the Capitals to taunt him tomorrow

The Habs take on the Washington Capitals tomorrow night for the first time since last spring’s playoffs. The highlight of that series was undoubtedly the battle between Tom Wilson and Josh Anderson.

Water has passed under the bridge since then, but it all started with Jakub Dobes taunting the Caps from the bench.

When Samuel Montembeault was injured, things escalated on the ice.

As Félix Séguin put it on Jean-Charles Lajoie’s show, expect the Capitals to taunt the Habs goaltender, even though he won’t be the starting goaltender tomorrow.

Why do you ask? Yes, because of his emotional reaction after a match.

Dobes, for his part, will be staying away from Capitals players. In an interview he gave to Séguin, he made that clear.

“I think I’ll make it next year. In the playoffs, everyone insults each other. It was nothing personal. I was trying to help my teammates” – Jakub Dobes

I really get the impression that the Caps players won’t mind talking to him about it during commercial breaks, and that’s fair enough. We’ll see how he reacts, but it’s bound to be interesting.

For now, his focus must be on his performance on the ice. With those of Samuel Montembeault, he has a place to win. He needs to come back with a signature performance, and that could be enough to make him the team’s number 1 goaltender.

The rotation is set for now, but I really have a feeling that the next goalie to win is going to save the net for the next game. It’s up to Dobes to win now. He has a 4.34 goals-against average and a 0.813 save percentage in November.

– Adam Engstrom shines.

Bryce Pickford: the Habs prospect has already sent the Red Wings packing

At the last draft, the Canadiens selected defenseman Bryce Pickford 81st overall. We’re talking about a defenseman who was actually in his second year of eligibility for the NHL draft.

He was unclaimed in 2024.

And clearly, that motivated the kid, who really improved during the 2024-25 season. That’s why the Habs gave him a chance in the third round… but he might never have made it.

Because following the 2024 draft, Pickford was invited by the Red Wings to their development camp. And that clearly didn’t sit well with Pickford, as he explained to Nicolas Cloutier(TVA Sports).

He responded to the invitation by saying he wasn’t going to show up, because if the Red Wings liked him that much, they should have drafted him. Nothing less.

It was obviously a great source of motivation for Pickford, who practiced hard in the months that followed. And what we understand is that the young man is clearly not one to shy away from a challenge.

And in a market like Montreal, that’s a great quality to have.

Pickford may not be the club’s best prospect, but we’re still talking about a defender who has 11 goals and 21 points in 19 games this season. And above all, we’re talking about a right-handed defenseman, a position where the Habs don’t have a ton of depth.

That means he has the potential to be a long-term factor… and if he does end up playing for the Habs, the club can count itself lucky to have seen him have enough guts to turn down an offer from a division rival, hehe.

Less than 40%: Alexander Zharovsky is a force to be reckoned with in the face-off circle

Alexander Zharovsky is enjoying a fine season in the KHL. He’s slowed down a bit in recent games, but he still has 15 points in 19 games so far.

For an 18-year-old, that’s quite a feat.

That said, what’s interesting is that we’re seeing more and more of Zharovsky playing center. He really seems to enjoy playing that position… which is interesting, given that the Habs are looking for a top-6 center.

However, there’s one thing that worries me: when you look at his performance in the face-off circle, it’s… not ideal.

He’s won 39.5% of his duels this season, and today he lost all five of his face-off encounters.

Consider that Zharovsky hasn’t always been a natural center, so he’s still learning. There’s reason to believe that, over time, he could develop his technique and win his duels more frequently.

Especially if the Habs are willing to coach him when he arrives in America to help him improve in this area.

That said, it’s also logical to ask whether Zharovsky can really aspire to play center full-time in the NHL if he’s taking so much in the face-off circle in the KHL. If he’s getting it right now, it’s likely to get harder when he arrives in America, where the level will be higher.

That’s not to say it’s impossible, far from it. On the other hand, he’ll have a lot of work to do if he wants to be at the heart of a top-6 NHL team in the long term. And what’s certain is that, right now, it’s far too early to assume that he will.

Overtime

– Fair enough. I don’t see him making a panic trade, though.

– It’s true.

– Indeed.

Martin St-Louis admits it: There’s starting to be competition between Dobes and Monty

If we follow logic, Samuel Montembeault is still the Canadiens’ #1 goaltender.

He’s the one who took the Habs to the playoffs last year, and he’s the one who started the season as #1 goalie. But at the same time, we know that the Québécois has been struggling since the start of the campaign.

Jakub Dobes, on the other hand, has shone for a while… but it’s been more difficult of late. Whatever the case, it’s all the same at the moment: the Habs have won just one of their last seven games, and without saying it’s all the goalies’ fault, we can’t rule out the fact that they haven’t been getting the job done lately.

Martin St-Louis, for the first time, spoke of a certain competition between Dobes and Monty this morning after practice.

He admitted to reporters on the spot that we’re “maybe there yet”… and that says a lot, in a way, about how he sees things.

Eric Engels wrote about it (Sportsnet):

The important thing now is to find the guy the Habs can trust.

If it’s Monty, it’s Monty. And if it’s Dobes… it’ll be Dobes.

After all, the Canadiens aren’t at the stage where they still have to ask questions. The club has the talent to win games, and we saw an example of that at the start of the season when the Habs were unbeatable or close to it.

But if the two guys in front of the net can’t make the important saves, it hurts. And that’s what’s happening right now.

So, what’s next is going to be… interesting. At the same time, I’m afraid it will put added pressure on both goalkeepers… and we all know that, at times like these, it can be hard for a goalkeeper to stand up and be confident in his or her abilities.

May the best man win (or play), to put it another way. And I wonder which goalie will be able to do it…

The Habs are also open to the idea of acquiring a winger (according to Pierre LeBrun)

The Canadiens are looking to make a deal. It’s no longer a secret.

They’re one of the aggressive teams on the market right now, but therein lies the problem: there aren’t a ton of guys available in the four corners of the National League on said market.

As a result, the NHL is rather quiet when it comes to transactions.

We know that the Habs would like to get their hands on a center because it’s been on Kent Hughes’ wish list for some time. But…

But the Canadiens are also open to the idea of acquiring a winger, according to Pierre LeBrun in a recent text. And that’s interesting on several levels.

It’s interesting because we know that the Canadiens’ “problem” is in the middle.

But it does show one thing: Kent Hughes wants to improve his club, no matter what. The Habs GM wants to bring in some help, and many say that the timing is perfect with the team’s recent failures and the injuries that are starting to pile up on the forward line.

We shouldn’t necessarily expect a major coup, however. Eric Engels believes(Sick Podcast) that Hughes could make a move for a proven NHL veteran.

A bit like we saw with Alexandre Carrier last year, basically.

Ideally, it would take a center… because the Habs probably won’t be able to rely on Oliver Kapanen, Jake Evans and Joe Veleno to get the club to the playoffs. Dach is injured for at least a month… and Newhook is likely to return to action in the final stretch of the campaign.

On the other hand, adding a player who can help (whether on the wing or in the middle) right now could be a solution. Especially if the market for center players continues to be so explosive…

Overtime

– Wow!

– That’s right.

– Of note.

Barbecue accident: burns prevent Eetu Luostarinen from playing

Bad news in Florida.

The Panthers, who have already suffered several injuries since the start of the year, will have to cope without the services of Eetu Luostarinen for at least a few weeks.

Why? Because of a barbecue accident.

Paul Maurice has announced that his player will not be able to play (he is evaluated on a weekly basis) because he has burns related to his barbecue accident.

This is… unexpected news.

Obviously, when a player has to miss an event that has nothing to do with an injury sustained in the course of his duties, there’s a reaction.

But these guys are just like any other, when it comes down to it. Accidents happen.

Obviously, the fact that this is a second injury in a few days in the NHL, related to an event that has nothing to do with hockey, is causing quite a stir. Let’s not forget that Jack Hughes recently cut himself during a team dinner.

These are events that get people talking more than a regular injury.

Can you imagine if a Canadiens player, under the current circumstances, had been injured while eating or using his barbecue? That would clearly be the talk of Montreal in droves.

And not for the right reasons.

In the end, if Luostarinen has to miss several games because of a burn, it must really hurt. And that’s not counting his pride injury.

It remains to be seen how soon he’ll be back.
