Patrik Laine out of action for three to four months

This is it.

We know what’s in store for Patrik Laine. The forward will miss three to four months of action after undergoing surgery.

The Canadiens have announced that Laine has undergone surgery to repair abdominal wall muscles (sports hernia), which is unfortunate for him. We know how hard he’s had it in recent years…

More details to come…

All signs point to Jakub Dobes playing tonight

Ahead of tonight’s 7pm game against the Vancouver Canucks, we were wondering which goaltender the Canadiens would be sending into the fray.

Well, all indications point to Jakub Dobes getting the start tonight.

Samuel Montembeault practiced as an extra this morning, along with Marc Del Gaizo and Joshua Roy.

Details to come

Extension

Dobes would get his third start in four games, which makes sense given the recent performances of both goalies.

Dobes has been on fire, while Monty has been struggling since the start of the season.

Mike Matheson file: Kent Hughes will try to convince him to be reasonable

The Montreal Canadiens’ defensive brigade is currently in a very good long-term position, with all the major players under contract for several seasons.

Only two defensemen have no contract beyond this season, and I’m talking about Mike Matheson and Arber Xhekaj.

In Xhekaj’s case, it will surely be a small bridge contract, but in Matheson’s case, at the age of 31, he will surely want to sign the last big contract of his career.

The Québécois will certainly want to get as much money as possible to end his career on a high note, so it will be interesting to see if he gets along with the Canadiens.

The Habs clearly won’t offer him the moon, and they won’t take the risk of signing him too long-term for too much money, which could complicate negotiations.

Obviously, both parties want to come to an agreement, and it’s clear that Matheson wants to stay in Montreal, but for that to happen, there will have to be compromises on both sides.

Habs general manager Kent Hughes has stated that he will try to convince Matheson to be reasonable in his salary demands.

This is what the Habs GM explained in an interview with Jonathan Bernier of Le Journal de Montréal.

For Kent Hughes, it’s obvious that Matheson wants to win, and therefore, that his situation is different now that he’s with the Habs compared to when he was in Florida (rebuilding at the time) or Pittsubrgh (on the downhill slope).

If Matheson really wants to win, he’ll want to stay in Montreal, perhaps even at a discount, which would help the Habs be even more competitive.

As we saw with Hutson, the Habs’ #48 signed for less money than we would have thought in order to help the team win and be as competitive as possible.

Kent Hughes clearly hopes that Matheson will see things the same way, especially considering that he was his former client when he was still an agent, and that he still has a good relationship with him.

This will be a very interesting case to keep an eye on until the end of the year, when it’s clear that Kent Hughes will want to settle the matter as quickly as possible.

Matheson is off to a good start this season, with five points, including two goals, in nine games, and he’s also developed a nice chemistry with Noah Dobson.

In short, the Québécois is a cornerstone of the Habs defense right now, which will make negotiations much more difficult for Kent Hughes.

Alexander Zharovsky rolls at the same pace as Ivan Demidov in his KHL debut

Ivan Demidov has been blowing everyone away since the start of his rookie season, as he really shows off the full extent of his talent with some magnificent play.

We knew he’d be good, because we saw him develop and dominate in the KHL last season, and we just couldn’t wait for him to arrive in Montreal.

Demidov’s rate of production for an 18-year-old KHL rookie was mind-boggling, but now another Habs prospect is doing the same.

Alexander Zharovsky, drafted 34th overall by the CH in the last NHL Entry Draft, is easily matching Ivan Demidov’s pace in his first ten KHL games.

The 18-year-old Zharovsky makes Demidov’s exploits last season look normal and easy.

After ten games, Zharovsky has eight points, just like Demidov last season.

That’s really quite impressive, especially considering Demidov was producing at an extraordinary rate for his age, which even earned him Rookie of the Year honors.

Well, if Zharovsky keeps this up, he too could very well win KHL Rookie of the Year.

And for now, the Habs prospect shows no signs of slowing down, as he scored another goal today, when he scored a superb powerplay goal.

That gives him four goals and five assists, for a total of nine points in 11 games.

Zharovsky also had a good game overall, aside from that goal, playing just over 17 minutes in Ufa’s Salavat Yulaev’s 2-1 win over Nizhnekamsk’s Neftekhimik.

In short, the Habs really seem to have another diamond in the rough on their hands.

The Habs have pulled off quite a coup, drafting a player capable of producing so much at 18 years of age in the KHL in the 34th spot.

Obviously, I’m not saying that Zharovsky is as good or will be as good as Demidov, but I do think that Zharovsky is proving why the Habs believe in him so much and praised him so much at the draft.

In short, we’ll continue to follow Zharovsky’s performances closely, as he becomes more and more the centerpiece of his team, one of the worst in the KHL.

What’s even more interesting is that the Russian prospect has been playing center for a few games now, and he’s doing very well.

Isn’t he the Habs’ future second center?

And last but not least, with Demidov doing well in the NHL and Zharovsky dominating in the KHL, the Canadiens could very well have Rookie of the Year two seasons in a row in the two best leagues in the world.

That would be truly impressive.

Top-4: Leafs lose to Sabres and stay clear of the Habs in the standings

There was very little hockey last night, with only four games played in the National Hockey League.

Eight teams were in action, including two from the Atlantic Division, closely watched by the Canadiens.

Without further ado, here’s what caught the eye last night.

1. Leafs in trouble, lose to Sabres

The Canadiens currently sit atop the Atlantic Division with a 6-3-0 record and 12 points.

It’s still early in the season, of course, but the three teams we’ve seen at the top of the division – the Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning – are off to ordinary starts.

The Habs have a cushion, and that cushion remained comfortable last night as the Toronto Maple Leafs lost to the Buffalo Sabres.

The two teams were battling it out for 3rd place in the Atlantic Division, and surprisingly, it was the Sabres who pulled off the upset, winning 5-3.

In the victory, defensive defenseman Mattias Samuelsson scored two goals.

In short, the Leafs lost an important game yesterday, much to the delight of the Canadiens, who hold a five-point lead over the Leafs with one more game to play.

2. Alex Ovechkin scores his 899th career goal

Several teams in the Metropolitan Division are off to a good start this season, including the Washington Capitals, Ovi’s gang.

At 40, Ovechkin may be in his final NHL season, but that hasn’t stopped him from continuing to be dominant.

Last night, in the Caps’ 5-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, Ovi scored two points, including his 899th career goal.

The Russian legend is now just one goal away from 900 career NHL goals, a plateau that has obviously never been reached.

Ovechkin has seven points, including two goals, in eight games this season.

3. Three-point night for Dougie Hamilton

The New Jersey Devils are one of the best teams in the NHL at the start of the season, and their first-place overall finish is proof of that.

Last night, they picked up their seventh win of the season in eight games, giving them 14 points, good for first place in the NHL.

The Devils’ 3-1 win over the San Jose Sharks allowed them to climb to the top of the NHL standings.

Thanks to Dougie Hamilton, who scored two goals and an assist in this game.

4. Eighth loss already for the Flames

From the best team in the NHL to the worst, the Calgary Flames are in last place in the entire NHL.

Last night, they suffered their eighth loss of the season and seventh in regular time, losing 5-3 to the Winnipeg Jets.

Nazem Kadri scored his first goal of the season in the defeat.

In short, the Flames have just three points after eight games, and it seems obvious that they’ll be fighting to get Gavin McKenna, the coveted first pick in the next NHL draft.

Lukas Reichel traded for a 4th round pick: the Habs may have missed the boat

The Vancouver Canucks have acquired Lukas Reichel, a 23-year-old player with great potential. He was never able to blossom in Chicago and wanted a fresh start, but the Hawks only got a fourth-round pick in return for the forward…

The question I have is: did the Habs miss the boat, considering the low price the Canucks paid in the deal? Reichel stands 6’0, weighs 170 pounds and was selected with the 17th overall pick of the 2020 Entry Draft. He’s struggled a bit since the start of his NHL career, but has also shown some really interesting flashes at the same time. For example? In 22-23, he collected 15 points (seven goals) in just 23 games in Chicago. And he had four points, including two goals, in just five duels since the start of the current season…

(Credit: Screenshot / HockeyDB)

[content-ads] Lukas Reichel is still young. He has time to blossom in the NHL because he’s already had his share of success at times in the big league. That said, on the Canadiens’ side… perhaps the idea of getting their hands on another “project” wasn’t appealing.Things are going well for the club at the moment, the forwards already in the line-up are hard to crack… and even if Reichel is loaded with talent, the Habs may not need him right now. That said, it would have been interesting to graft another really talented forward onto the current group. It wasn’t a huge risk, because the Canucks only had to part with a 4th-round pick… so it remains to be seen. But maybe the Habs – like 29 other NHL clubs – missed the boat on this one. spacer title=’Overtime’] – Oh.

– Yikes.

– Can’t wait to see how this turns out.

– Sick.

Patrik Laine and his wife finalists for Sports Personality of the Year award

Every year, the Conseil du sport de Montréal – a non-profit organization whose vision is to make Montreal a sporting metropolis – presents an award to the person who wins the title of Sports Personality of the Year. Last year, three women were finalists for the award: Audrey Leduc (athletics), Jacqueline Simoneau (artistic swimming) and Marie-Phillip Poulin.Marie-Phillip Poulin won

There are three finalists again this year: Luguentz Dort, who plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder and just won the NBA championship. Annie Larouche, who led the Montreal Roses to a playoff appearance in the club’s first year of existence. Ah, and there’s also Patrik Laine and his wife, who are nominated for the award. The gala will take place on November 20… but basically, it’s interesting to see Laine and his wife, Jordan Leigh, among the finalists

On the ice, Patrik Laine helped the Canadiens secure their playoff berth during the recent season. But we also know that Laine and his wife were involved in some off-ice activities. They organized a fashion show in Montreal in August – an event designed to raise public awareness of mental health issues – and it turned out to be a resounding success. So much the better, if Laine and his wife have been recognized as important contributors to the evolution of sport in Montreal.

But at the same time, it’s going to be hard not to vote for Luguentz Dort… who won the NBA championship and put the city of Montreal on the map with a truly exceptional feat.If I had to vote, at least, it would be for Luguentz. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Nice list.

– For me, it’s MacKinnon.

– I love this.

Another tough match for Laval

After losing 6-2 to the Belleville Senators on Wednesday, the Laval club lost to the Americans in Rochester tonight by a score of 4-0.

Unsurprisingly, it was goaltender Kaapo Kähkönen in net, while Jacob Fowler had a rather ordinary game, giving up six goals on just 28 shots against the Sens.

And once again, the lack of resources on the Rocket’s defense as the home team threw no less than 38 times at Kähkönen, who gave up three goals and was often left to his own devices. On the other hand, the Lavallois only threw 19 times at opposing goaltender Devon Levi, who was perfect. Let’s just say that the offense didn’t help Kähkönen much either.

[content-ads] Pascal Vincent’s club is without the services of David Reinbacher and William, who have yet to play this season due to injury, plus Marc Del Gaizo who was recalled by the Canadiens for their trip out West.

That’s three major absentees on the blue line, and while Adam Engstrom is good, he can’t do it all on his own. One really has to wonder whether Jacob Fowler could have done a better job in front of the net in such a situation.

Moreover, so many defensive absentees is hardly an ideal scenario for a developing goaltender, especially if his confidence isn’t high. As long as the Rocket’s defense doesn’t play better and continues to give away a lot of shots and scoring chances, we can’t expect Fowler to perform miracles in front of the net, and a string of tough outings could undermine his confidence.

Perhaps, while waiting for injured or recalled players to return, Laval is better off giving the net to Kähkönen to protect its young keeper. spacer title=’Overtime’] – A little massage?

– No points tonight for Micheal Hage.

– Jays tie the game

– His first in his hometown.

Cole Caufield leads NHL in goals

This morning, there’s a bit of negativity surrounding the Canadiens. Refereeing and the Samuel Montembeault situation are at the heart of it, as you know. But it’s not all negative. In fact, with his two goals yesterday (which were very important at the time they were scored, late in the second period), Cole Caufield now leads the NHL, tied with a few other players, in goals with seven.

Seth Jarvis, Mark Scheifele, Shane Pinto and Pavel Dorofeyev are the other seven-goal players in the NHL right now. We knew Caufield could score, but his start to the season is quite promising. After all, not only does he play 200 feet and score a lot, but he does it in important moments most of the time.

[content-ads]But it’s still interesting to note that, looking at the stats on the NHL website, it’s visually easy to see several CH members well placed among the best in their profession.

Jakub Dobes, for example, has the best average in the NHL this morning – among guys who have played more than one game.

(Credit: NHL.com)

Among defensemen, we see that Lane Hutson is the league’s second-best player in terms of points. Cale Makar is at nine, meaning he has one more point than the CH small defenseman. Nick Suzuki leads the NHL in assists with 11. Among rookies, Ivan Demidov and Oliver Kapanen have six points, as does Zeev Buium. Only Matthew Schaefer and Emmith Finnie have more points than them: they have seven. So no, yesterday’s setback doesn’t take away many of the positives we’ve been seeing around town all season. [spacer title=’en rafale’]- Sick.

– To read.

– Will he be traded?

The Habs’ defensive brigade has the most points of any NHL club

The Canadiens’ defense has done a good job in general since the start of the season, notably by limiting the quality chances offered to their opponents five-on-five. However, in addition to its good play in its zone, the Canadiens’ blue line is also contributing offensively, currently leading the NHL in points with 25.

It’s been a long time since the Habs have counted on a major forward contribution from their defensive brigade. Let’s just say we’ve missed Andrei Markov and P.K. Subban on the blue line for quite some time. The offensive contribution of the defensemen helps the production of the first line and takes some of the pressure off them to score. Lane Hutson tops the list with eight points in just nine games. Finally, the second-season jinx doesn’t seem to be affecting him too much. Tied for second place are Mike Matheson and Noah Dobson, each with five points so far.

[content-ads] When I look at this list, what I’m thinking is that the acquisition of Dobson is giving exactly the results we’d hoped for: he’s bringing offensive production thanks to his mobility and vision, while stabilizing the Habs’ entire defense by forming a solid duo with Matheson.

Hutson remains our most spectacular defenseman, who should accumulate the most points, and the quarterback of the first power play, but we can use him in situations that are more advantageous to him, since he’s not on the first pair.

Let’s just say that, for the time being, it’s pretty much the ideal scenario for all three players, and one also wonders what contribution Kaiden Guhle will make to our top three and to the Habs’ entire blue line, which should be solidified upon his return to action.

In short, for the time being, we’re mostly hoping that our defense continues its good work on both offense and defense.[spacer title=’Overtime’] – He retires Ohtani to start the game.
