Canadiens fall apart in third period, lose to Edmonton

The Canadiens continued their trip out West on Thursday, taking on the Oilers in Edmonton. Samuel Montembeault had the chance to get his season back on track after looking poor in his last few starts. Here’s the Canadiens lineup:

Here’s the Oilers lineup:

The Canadiens were the first to strike in this game. Lane Hutson headed a shot on net and Alex Newhook took care of the scoring on the return.

Canadiens fans were happy to see Ivan Demidov finally get his spot on the powerplay. Except it was another rookie who scored the next goal. David Tomasek unleashed a powerful shot that bounced off Newhook before finding the back of the net.

It was Tomasek’s first NHL goal, and after 20 minutes of play, it was tied 1-1. [content-ads] It was a roller-coaster second period. Adam Henrique started the job by redirecting a floating shot that got the better of Montembeault.

Let’s just say the Québécois goalie already looked better. Andrew Mangiapane added to Edmonton’s lead just three minutes later.

That’s when the Habs woke up. Josh Anderson got things started with his first goal of the season to close the gap.

Then, a minute later, Cole Caufield accepted a beautiful pass from Noah Dobson to tie the game.

But it wasn’t over yet! Caufield added to it with his second goal of the game.

Montreal scored three goals in less than two minutes of play! After two periods, the Canadiens were leading 4-3. [content-ads] The third period got off to a great start for the Canadiens. Alex Newhook scored his second goal of the game to give his team a two-goal cushion.

Oliver Kapanen’s pass was probably the best part of the goal, but the game was far from over. Leon Draisaitl took advantage of a powerplay to score his fifth goal this season.

Nothing to lift Montembeault’s spirits, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins created the tie less than a minute later.

The third period was one to forget for the Habs. Vasily Podkolzin restored the Oilers’ lead with barely a minute to play in the period.

It was this goal that gave the Oilers the 6-5 victory, meaning the Habs lost after two straight wins.

Montreal continues its road trip away from home on Saturday, when it faces the Vancouver Canucks [spacer title=’Prolongation’] – Ivan Demidov finally gets his chance on the first powerplay.

Michael Hage played injured for most of last season

Michael Hage had quite a rookie season in the NCAA in 2024-25. His 34 points in 33 games earned him Rookie of the Year honors in the NCAA’s Big Ten division. He accomplished this feat while injured. That’s what his head coach with the University of Michigan, Brandon Naurato, explained in an interview with Sportsnet’s Mike Koreen.

😅

So that means Hage was able to be one of the best in the league while being maganaged. Normally, a player who plays injured is slowed down, but in this case, Hage was able to continue his development by forgetting about the pain. This great resilience of the Canadiens’ prospect probably bought him time in his development. Hage’s development is going wonderfully well. We feel he’s taken a step forward since the start of the season. Playing healthy certainly helps, but he’s definitely better. His 13 points in seven games speak for themselves, and Hage picked up two points in his most recent game on Thursday. The University of Michigan Wolverines won 4-0 over the Western Michigan Broncos, and he came on strong to score his team’s second goal and set up Adam Valentini’s goal in the third period.

A healthy Michael Hage all season could stay in the running for the Hobey-Baker Trophy awarded to the NCAA’s top player.

A full healthy season could also allow him to develop sufficiently to join the Canadiens at the end of the campaign or the beginning of the next. spacer title=’Overtime’] – Zachary Bolduc’s arrival hasn’t helped Patrik laine’s playing time.

– Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton are seventh.

Here’s what it will take for Patrik Laine to talk contract with Kent Hughes

Mike Matheson is the Canadiens’ next contract priority, but would Patrik Laine like to be in that position? There’s every reason to believe so, given that he openly stated this summer that he wanted to sign a contract extension. But… Clearly, at the moment, the Finn hasn’t put himself in a position where he can afford to go to the GM and ask him to sign a new contract with the Habs. Yesterday, David Pagnotta spoke on the subject.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1469&v=vu7ZXuNSWLw&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailyfaceoff.com%2F&source_ve_path=MjM4NTE [content-ads]On behalf of DFO, he mentioned that the Habs and Laine had held talks this summer, and that there was even some renewed life in the talks during the preseason. But since then? Nothing. What Pagnotta is saying is that in order to bring the talks back to the forefront, Laine will have to produce (especially at five-on-five) in order to get back to the negotiating table. But since Laine is waiting for a second opinion after a difficult camp and after a start to the season that didn’t live up to expectations…Between you and me, even if Laine were to come back with a vengeance soon, I have a hard time seeing a world in which Kent Hughes is eager to give him a new contract.

If you read between the lines of Pagnotta’s comments, you’d think that the chances of Laine and Hughes signing a contract that would suit everyone are pretty slim. The gamble was worth it a year ago, and it helped get the Canadiens to the playoffs. Spacer title=’Overtime’]- Ridiculous.– Really?– Yes

Nick Suzuki well placed in the race for the Selke Trophy

Offensively, Nick Suzuki is off to an excellent start to the season, his 11 points ranking him fifth in the entire NHL. Offensively, he’s excellent. Defensively, he’s one of the best forwards in the NHL, at least that’s how Renaud Lavoie sees it. During his appearance on TVA Sports’ JiC show on Thursday, Lavoie praised Suzuki’s performance with a little allusion to the Selke Trophy.

Renaud Lavoie talked not only about Suzuki’s 11 points, but also about the fact that he has a +6 differential, which ranks 13th in the entire NHL and ninth among forwards. And that differential doesn’t count powerplay goals. Lavoie did the math: when Suzuki was on the ice in the first eight games, the Canadiens scored 14 goals and conceded just three, giving them a strong case to lead the race for the Selke Trophy. For now, Renaud Lavoie has noted two other players who are also in this race since the start of the season. Suzuki also has five blocked shots so far this season. That’s one more than Marner and Eichel. Last season, Suzuki stood out by completing the campaign with a +19 rating, and was voted 13th for the Selke Trophy.

This season, the Canadiens’ captain could do even better than his +19 from last campaign.

And going like this, we can expect him to finish higher in the Selke voting standings than last season.[spacer title=’En rafale’] – Emil Heineman is doing well with the Islanders.

Patrik Laine has no knee injury, says Kent Hughes

Patrik Laine’s injury arrived suddenly and what was supposed to be a day-to-day assessment quietly became more serious. No one knows exactly what the injury is, but Kent Hughes has revealed that his forward doesn’t have a knee injury like last season. This was reported by Jonathan Bernier in a Journal de Montréal text on Thursday.

Kent Hughes explained that this is something completely new in Laine’s case.It was already known that Laine had sought a second opinion for his injury assessment, which wasn’t necessarily a good sign. The Finnish forward did not accompany the Canadiens on their trip out West.More details to follow.

Mike Matheson is the NHL’s best defensive defenseman, according to Dany Dubé

Since his arrival with the Canadiens, Mike Matheson has established himself as an offensive defenseman capable of playing long minutes in a game. This season, with the arrival of Noah Dobson, his role has been called upon to change. He has become a more complete defenseman, and we feel that he is better defensively than he has shown in recent years. In his column on TVA Sports’ JiC , Dany Dubé took everyone by surprise when he said that Matheson is the best defensive defenseman in the entire National Hockey League.

I don’t think anyone expected such a statement today. What Dany Dubé likes is to see Matheson defend well, block shots and get involved in the physical game. Mike Matheson is effectively 10th in the NHL this season for blocked shots, which is excellent. As for turnovers, Matheson has been the victim of 11 this season, according to moneypuck.com, which places him 20th in the entire NHL. Dubé is right to say that Matheson is an important player for the Canadiens. But is that enough to say that Mike Matheson is the best defensive player in the NHL?

[content-ads] Dubé puts Matheson at the top of the list for his all-round game, and gives him a lot of credit because few defensive defensemen in the NHL are as capable of collecting points. The Habs’ defenseman has already collected five points after eight games. Best defensive player in the NHL or not, Matheson remains one of the most important defensemen in the Canadiens’ brigade. Overtime] – Michel Goulet is a big fan of Ivan Demidov.

– It’s going to be beautiful.

Samuel Montembeault and his difficulties: Kent Hughes is not worried

Samuel Montembeault’s performance is the talk of the town at the moment, and we all know why. The goalie hasn’t had a great start to the season, and that’s why goalie management is getting a lot of attention in Montreal. For example? Yesterday, the Habs decided to trust Jakub Dobes against the Flames (and it worked). In the eyes of José Théodore(98.5 FM), this shows a lack of respect for Monty… because he’s the one who took the Canadiens to the playoffs last season. But Kent Hughes isn’t panicking when he sees his #1 goalie struggling. In an interview with Jonathan Bernier of Le Journal de Montréal, the Canadiens’ GM said it out loud: he’s not worried about Samuel Montembeault right now. I’m not

worried about Sam,

really.

Since I arrived in Montreal, he’s always been a consistent keeper.

Kent Hughes

And in fact, Hughes is right. Note that the JDM article was also published on the TVA Sports website.

[content-ads] Would Kent Hughes publicly plant his goalie? Of course not. He’s not the type to do that, and while he must want to see more from his #1 goalie, openly criticizing him would have led to… absolutely nothing.but by reiterating his confidence in Monty, it could also help the Québécois find his rhythm again. Sometimes, that’s what it takes for a player to be able to get back into the game. Montembeault knows that the organization loves him and cares about him – and he also knows that he has to give more to help his club on the ice. It’s up to Montembeault to get back on track. He’s got a good test tonight against the Oilers, and it’s by having a good outing that he can regain his confidence. The ball is in his court. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – 4-3 CH tonight. What’s your

VIDEO: Scott Wedgewood’s mask in Nordiques colors is sensational

Tonight, the Avalanche and Hurricanes will face off in Colorado, or should I say, the Whalers and Nordiques will face off in Colorado. The Avalanche will be wearing their old Nordiques jerseys, and the Hurricanes will be playing in their old Whalers jerseys. It’s going to be a special moment. Scott Wedgewood will have the job of stopping the mighty Carolina team, and he’s had a special Nordiques mask made for the occasion. And in fact, his mask is simply… sensational. The result is truly magnificent, with the Nordiques sign on both sides of the mask… and fleur-de-lys all over the helmet.

[content-ads] But it doesn’t stop there either.

For tonight’s game, Wedgewood will also be sporting new pads, a new mitt and a new old sch0ol-styleshield. We got a glimpse of what the goalie will look like tonight at the Avalanche’s practice of the day… and I think his style is spectacular. I’m sure I won’t be the only one, though:

One thing’s for sure, the Avalanche goaltender won’t go unnoticed on the ice tonight against the Hurricanes. Will he have a big game and help his team to a sixth win in nine duels this season? Overtime] – Oh.

– He’s right.

– Yeah!

Renaud Lavoie: “If you wait until June to sign Mike Matheson, good evening… he’s gone”

The Canadiens have won six of their eight games so far this season, and now sit atop the Atlantic Division… and 4th overall in the National Hockey League. That said, some of this success has to be attributed to Mike Matheson, who has been playing some really great hockey so far. The Québécois is an indispensable part of the team’s formation, and he’s fulfilling his role to perfection. Yesterday again, the #8 had a big game. He spent 25 minutes and 26 seconds on the ice, was excellent in his zone throughout the game… and it was he who gave his club the win in overtime. He was really excellent.

[content-ads] Matheson was really excellent… and has been since the very beginning of the season. That’s why Martin St-Louis doesn’t hesitate to use him as much as possible: Matheson may be playing too much at the moment – and we know he tends to make more mistakes when that happens – but the results are there. and if the results continue to be this good, you have to wonder what that will mean for his next contract. Because let’s not forget: the defenseman is in the final year of his deal and will be eligible to test the free agent market on July 1 if he hasn’t signed by then. And without saying that time is running out, Renaud Lavoie shared a sobering phrase this morning on BPM Sports

if you wait until June to sign Mike Matheson, good evening… he’s gone.

Renaud Lavoie

The journalist is right: the longer the Canadiens wait, the more Matheson’s value will rise if he continues to perform like this. He’ll be one of the few quality defensemen available on July 1, and if he’s not under contract by then, there will be teams who are really interested in him – and who will probably be ready to shell out the big bucks to try and convince him to sign.

It would be a dangerous game for Kent Hughes and the Canadiens, and right now, the Habs don’t seem to have the luxury of losing an important player – both on the ice and in the dressing room – like Mike Matheson. Especially with Kaiden Guhle injured more often than not…This is an issue that needs to be resolved. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Connor McDavid sends flowers to the CH.

– Of note.

– A great night for the former QMJHLer.

“I can’t create offense”: The Habs really discouraged Dustin Wolf

The Flames were unable to score more than a single goal against the Habs last night, but Jakub Dobes was outstanding in net. The rookie goaltender – who is eligible for the Calder Trophy – stopped 36 of 37 shots and had quite an outing in Calgary. Except for the Flames, the result is frustrating. Because all season long, the team simply hasn’t been able to score… And now, after yesterday’s game, Dustin Wolf is getting fed up. The 24-year-old goalie criticized his club’s offense and threw his teammates under the bus, saying that he’s doing his job, but he can’t create offense for his team. But in reality, it’s not like Wolf has been spectacular this season. He has a 1-5-1 record, a .875 efficiency rate and a 3.61 goals-against average…Maybe he should have saved himself a little embarrassment.

[content-ads] At the same time, maybe that’s what it takes to whip the Flames.

They’re off to a truly atrocious start to the season: they’ve won just one of their eight games this season… and that’s truly awful when you consider the fact that they’ve scored a paltry total of 13 goals (you read that right) so far this campaign. It’s obviously not enough. To win games – whether in the NHL, MLB, NBA, NFL or MLS -… you have to be able to produce offensively. It takes points on the board to win, and that’s really not what we’ve seen in Calgary since the start of the season. Wolf’s exit is justified in that sense. But then again, for a guy who’s having such a hard time right now, maybe the timing wasn’t quite right to come out and say it publicly. I wonder what the guys in the room think. We’re talking about a 24-year-old goalie with 78 games of NHL experience who just signed a $52.5 million (seven-year) contract with the Flames… [spacer title=’Overtime’] – That’s cool to see.

– Oh yeah?

– He’s on fire, really.

– Sick.
