Practice: five forwards absent, including Patrik Laine and Kirby Dach

As you know, today’s habs practice was eagerly awaited. Why? Because the weekend changed a lot of things, and so there were, of necessity, a lot of issues to keep an eye on this morning. First of all, it’s worth noting that Joe Veleno and Owen Beck were present. Beck’s case is quite revealing under the circumstances, since he could easily go to Laval if the club doesn’t need his services.Otherwise, there were five absentees: Patrik Laine, Kirby Dach, Zachary Bolduc, Brendan Gallagher and Josh Anderson. We’ll worry about Bolduc, Anderson and Gally if we have more details… but it’s not ideal. Especially for the young Québécois. #AineKaiden Guhle… five forwards… the season is just beginning and the infirmary is overflowing.#

[content-ads]But obviously, Laine and Dach are different cases.

In Dach’s case, it’s becoming increasingly clear that it’s more than just a matter of getting his knee back in shape: he’s looking downright injured. And that’s not looking good. After all, Laine and Dach have been day-to-day since Saturday – and maybe even Friday, a day off for the Canadiens. It’s been several days now, and not seeing them skate, of necessity, creates concern. Is there a bigger situation with the two players at the end of their contracts than we thought? We’ll see in due course, when the Habs give details following practice. spacer title=’prolongation’]- Jakub Dobes is lining up to play tonight.

– Of course.

– Interesting.

Alexander Zharovsky’s coach wants to break the Canadiens’ prospects

Alexander Zharovsky is a great project for the Canadiens. A lot of people think he has what it takes to make it big in the NHL, including his coach When you read Nicolas Cloutier’s article on the young man, you realize that Viktor Kozlov believes in Zharovsky. But he doesn’t show it by singing his praises publicly, let’s say.

In an interview with TVA Sports, the coach of Ufa’s Salavat Yulaev mentioned that the club is busy reminding him that what he’s doing isn’t enough.

Honestly,

I expect a little more from him this season.

Viktor Kozlov

Why talk like that about a youngster? Because it’s part of Russian culture, because the youngster still takes unnecessary punishment… but also to protect him. The people around the coach feel that he wants to protect his young colt. Viktor Kozlov himself is a sixth overall pick of the Sharks in 1993 who had a long NHL career. He wants to prepare Zharovsky for what awaits him in North America, and the pilot is well placed to know what awaits the 18-year-old kid.

In other words? The former Sharks coach believes it takes tough love to get his youngster to the next level, to correct his shortcomings. So even if he benches him, sometimes he wants his youngster to respond.

I find it interesting that he can help me when I send him out cold in a game.

Viktor Kozlov

Obviously, everyone has in mind what Roman Rotenberg did to Ivan Demidov last year, which leads to mistrust. Time will tell if Zharovsky will get the same treatment by the time he arrives in Montreal, but if Zharovsky becomes a man in Russia and arrives ready in Montreal, Canadiens fans won’t be complaining. Five issues to watch for today at the Canadiens

It’s game day in Montreal, and even though it’s Monday, the Canadiens will be in action tonight. The Buffalo Sabres will be in town for their final duel at the Bell Centre before heading out West, and there are a few things to keep an eye on for the Canadiens today. For example? 1. The Habs will practice at 10:30 this morning at the Bell Centre. Will Patrik Laine and Kirby Dach, two forwards considered on a day-to-day basis, be present? It remains to be seen whether any other forwards will be absent. 2. Even if the injured were to practice, that doesn’t mean they’ll play at 7:30 tonight. We’ll be watching to see if Owen Beck makes it to practice or is traded to the Laval Rocket, because if he does, it’s likely (but not necessarily) that he’ll play tonight. After all, the Canadiens don’t like to have too many extras upstairs… and Beck was officially called up on Saturday. 3. We’ll also be watching to see if practice gives us any answers about the trios in place. After all, if Patrik Laine practices with Jake Evans and Josh Anderson, that might give us some clues for tonight. But if Brendan Gallagher were to be on that line…In fact, we’ll be keeping an eye on the lines in general. Will Martin St-Louis be stirring his soup?

[content-ads]4. Right now, a lot of people want to see Jakub Dobes play in tonight’s game. Will Martin St-Louis trust his #1 goalie against the mighty Buffalo Sabres?Facing Buffalo could help Monty regain his confidence, no?5. I don’t expect to see a player recalled to the blue line today. Logically, there will only be six defensemen at today’s practice, but we’ll see. But we’ll see.

In any case, the incumbent defensemen will have to learn to deal with their new reality, one without Kaiden Guhle. There are fewer guys sitting in the right chair without #21,and on top of that, a guy like Lane Hutson is going to be targeted more, as we saw on Saturday. How will he respond?[spacer title=’Overtime’]- It was a big game for the Blue Jays against the Mariners yesterday. There’s a Game #7 tonight to see who’ll face the Dodgers in the World Series starting Friday, and

– Change coming to Buffalo?

– Read on.

– Interesting angle on the Olympics.

Top-4: Finally, maybe the Habs should be afraid of the Wings…

It was a quiet Sunday in the NHL. The CH was not in action… and there were only four games presented in the four corners of the league. Let’s see what happened:

1: Finally, maybe the Habs should be afraid of the Wings….

The Red Wings are on fire. After losing to the Habs in their first game of the season, they were looking for a fifth straight win yesterday afternoon, as the Oilers visited Detroit. In the game, Emmitt Finnie – a 7th-round pick in 2023 – scored his first NHL goal:

Dylan Larkin is one of the reasons the Wings are enjoying success right now. The club captain scored two goals yesterday… and while his second goal of the game wasn’t the prettiest, it’s the result that counts:

Ah, and there’s one fan who must have regretted throwing his hat on the ice when he thought Larkin had beaten the goalie for his 3rd goal of the game.Oops!

The Red Wings won that game 4-2 and are now 5-1-0 on the season.

Finally, maybe the CH should be afraid of the Wings…

[content-ads]

2: Tom Wilson will never change

The Canucks were in Washington to take on the Capitals. And in the first period, everything was to the visitors’ advantage: the Vancouver outfit scored three unanswered goals to quickly take control of the game, with Tyler Myers scoring a somewhat… bizarre goal:

But what we remembered from the first period was Tom Wilson’s check on Filip Chytil.Remember: Chytil has had concussion problems in the past. And he never got back into the game…

Evander Kane joined the party by collecting his third point with his new club.Well done:

The Capitals tried to get back into the game afterwards.

They scored three back-to-back goals to give themselves a chance, but…

But it was too little too late.

The Canucks won by a score of 4-3… and can say thank you to Elias Pettersson, who sacrificed himself for his club late in the game:

[content-ads]

3: Victory in extremis for the Mammoth

Liam O’Brien and Mark Kastrelic had some fun… and a few slaps on the wrist:

David Pastrnak must play a big part in his club’s success this season if the Bruins are to make the playoffs.

And yesterday, he did just that… by scoring his team’s first two goals:

But these were the Bruins’ only two moments of glory in the game.

Clayton Keller tied it… and Dylan Guenther gave his club the win in the third period, and the Mammoth never looked back, winning the game 3-2:

It’s not going well for the Bruins at the moment. The Boston outfit have won their first three games of the season… but have also just lost their fourth in a row. It’s not ideal.

[content-ads]

4: Quiet game between the Hawks and the Ducks

We had to wait until the third period to see a goal in the game between the Hawks and the Ducks. It was Frank Nazar who scored it… and his celebration was perfect:

The Hawks seemed headed for a 1-0 win…. before Mason McTavish stood up to tie the game with 36 seconds left:

Overtime was needed to determine a winner between the two clubs.

In closing, we must mention Spencer Knight’s start to the season.

Because in reality, the goalie is really, really smoking so far:

Lane Hutson and Ivan Demidov met fans in Mascouche

The Canadiens’ young stars continue to make waves, even away from the ice. This Sunday, Lane Hutson and Ivan Demidov took to the road in Mascouche to meet fans at a public signing event. No staging, no official cameras: just two Habs prospects chatting, smiling and pleasing their fans. On the spot, the young (and not-so-young) left with signed jerseys, caps or pucks, all accompanied by a photo with the players as a souvenir.

There’s nothing remarkable at first glance, but on a team where young players receive almost more recognition than the regular season, these little moments mean a lot. Lane Hutson was generous with the public. He signed numerous articles and accepted several photos with the fans who came to meet him. The young defenseman, already very popular with Canadiens fans, clearly enjoyed the direct contact with those who have followed him since his NHL debut. Ivan Demidov, meanwhile, was enjoying one of his first signing sessions in Quebec since being drafted by the Habs. The young Russian forward seems to appreciate the attention he receives from Québécois and wants to give back to them. For many, it was the first opportunity to see him in person, and his presence obviously aroused a great deal of interest [content-ads] The event, held in a Mascouche business called Memorable Authentic, attracted several dozen people who came to meet the two young habs players. The atmosphere was convivial, and fans seemed delighted to be able to trade with two of the organization’s most promising young players. This kind of public appearance isn’t just a public relations exercise. It’s a way of maintaining the bond between the team and its fans, who turn out night after night at the Bell Centre to cheer them on, even when the team has fallen on hard times in recent years. spacer title=’Overtime’]- Tarik Skubal could join the Mets.

Sidney Crosby in Montreal: Frank Seravalli goes the extra mile

There’s a rumor in Montreal that’s been growing for a few months now. We started hearing about it last year, but recently, several experts are adding to it. The rumour is that Sidney Crosby could end his career with the Montreal Canadiens, his childhood team. This week, Renaud Lavoie made a link with Mike Matheson, who would be a good reason for Crosby to eventually land in Montreal.

Darren Dreger also mentioned that the Habs would do everything in their power to get their hands on the Penguins’ superstar. There are several other experts who have linked Crosby to the Habs(such as Michael Russo), but now Frank Seravalli has added to the list during his latest appearance on the Big Show.

According to Seravalli, the fact that Crosby has said in the past that he always liked the Habs when he was younger and that the team is starting to be complete are good reasons for him to ask for a trade to come and play in Montreal.

[content-ads]However, Seravalli adds a nuance to this. First of all, it will be up to him. If he’s traded, he’s the one who’ll ask the Penguins to send him to the Canadiens, not the Penguins who’ll ask him. What’s more, Seravalli mentions that it will have to be a special scenario. He remains evasive, but points out that Crosby’s love for the team, which goes back to his childhood, and the ovation he received at the 4 Nations Confrontation are worth a lot in the equation. That doesn’t mean, however, that #87 will be coming to Montreal for sure, as Seravalli points out. A transaction like this never comes easily. There’s a lot to discuss before an agreement is reached, and Crosby’s case is a special one, since he’ll be the one to decide his fate for the rest of his career. Although the Habs aren’t a contender yet, the multiple injuries to the Florida Panthers and some other aging Eastern teams could certainly benefit the Habs. adding a Crosby to this line-up would only solidify the group. It would bring stability to the center (he’s effective in the face-off circle, left-handed, experienced and very talented) and the Habs certainly wouldn’t be a team to overlook. Just imagine Crosby at Ivan Demidov’s center (and whoever else is second winger)…. Demidov would be much better surrounded and the powerplay would be extremely dangerous. The next question would be the price to pay to acquire a Crosby. And since Crosby has the big stick, that would handcuff the Penguins GM to accepting less than he’d like. One thing’s for sure: Crosby would be welcomed like a king in Montreal. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – No players were submitted to the waivers this Sunday afternoon.

18.2% on the powerplay: The Habs need to make changes

If there was one thing Montreal Canadiens fans were really looking forward to seeing this season (newcomers aside), it was powerplay success… You’ll understand that there’s not much powerplay success so far this season with the massive attack. As of today, the Habs have only an 18.2% success rate with the man-advantage, and that’s far from what fans were expecting. Of course, we can’t say anything about Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, either at 5-on-5 or on the power play. Lane Hutson has also done a great job so far, with four assists in six games. Zachary Bolduc is one of the newcomers and has had an incredible start to the season. He’s also inherited the role of bumper on the first wave of the powerplay and he’s made the most of it with two points in that situation. On the other hand, many seem to think that seeing Ivan Demidov on the 2nd wave is a waste rather than a luxury.

On the latest episode of The Starr & D’Amico Show, the two hosts discussed this after a listener left a comment on the subject.[content-ads]It’s not complicated, it’s not working right now, changes need to be made and Ivan Demidov is quite possibly the solution. He always creates scoring opportunities every time he touches the puck. He has incredible vision and hands that put opponents to sleep. Why not put him on the first wave? In the most recent series, we’ve seen him used on the first wave, but he’s never had the opportunity to be there this season… I’m willing to believe that the addition of Bolduc since the playoffs has changed things a little. Bolduc or Slafkovsky must be sacrificed for Demidov, but I’d go for Bolduc even if he performs very well. Slaf needs to be a presence in front of the net and Bolduc needs to be in the bumper. By keeping Slaf on the first wave, his presence in front of the net, which is very good, allows the players to be better utilized[content-ads]Moreover, by putting Demidov on the first wave, he would obviously be on the right flank, which would allow Juraj Slafkovsky to be in front of the net, where he’s most useful. Suzuki would return to the bumper, Caufield would stay on the left and Hutson on the point. This would allow for much more circulation and better utilization of the players (especially Slafkovsky, who has no business on the right flank for a number of obvious reasons). It would also allow for a good second wave with Bolduc in the bumper (rather than Dach before his injury, a role in which he is not the most effective). Brendan Gallagher could remain in front of the net, something he does very well. Dach would be on the right flank to feed everyone. Patrik Laine (healthy, of course) would be on the left. Noah Dobson would be the quarterback. I don’t know about you, but it makes a lot more sense this way, and changes need to be made anyway. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – It’s such a shame to still see comments like this…

– Very interesting.

– They’re comical, them.

Brendan Gallagher wants to learn French for his daughter

Since marrying Quebecer Emma Fortin and fathering a baby daughter, Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher has taken on a new challenge that has nothing to do with hockey: learning French. Yes, the same Gallagher who has been charging headfirst into the opposing net for over ten years in Montreal is now tackling irregular verbs. All under the supervision of his wife, Emma. She wanted their daughter to grow up in a bilingual home, and she didn’t want Brendan to be left on the linguistic sidelines. As a result, the Gallagher-Fortin household sometimes resembles a small classroom, as the Canadiens’ veteran player talks to journalist Jean-Nicholas Blanchet. Gally, true to form, puts his shoulder to the wheel, even if it’s not always easy for a guy who, at school, preferred numbers to conjugations:

“I make a lot of effort with my in-laws. They tell me I’m good, and they encourage me. Even when I was young, I didn’t like languages. I liked maths better.”

Brendan Gallagher

And it’s not just a matter of studying: it’s a matter of the heart. The Habs’ number 11 wants to be able to talk to his in-laws, understand his daughter, and trade more naturally with the fans who have supported him since his NHL debut. Because let’s face it: in Montreal, French is more than just a language, it’s an identity. When a Canadiens player makes the effort to learn it, it doesn’t go unnoticed. The fans feel it. It creates a stronger bond between the team and its base, between the dressing room and the city. It’s not a contractual obligation or a press line. It’s a gesture of respect, a sign that a player understands what the logo on his uniform represents. In an organization as symbolic as the Habs, that counts for a lot [content-ads], as does another Habs player. Young Ivan Demidov, a newcomer to the organization, recently confided that he too was starting to speak French so that he could speak directly to the fans. The two players aren’t the same age, but they share a common goal. At heart, Brendan Gallagher remains true to himself: a guy who never gives up. Even when it comes to mastering past participles. Samuel Montembeault is one of the NHL’s worst goaltenders this season

Samuel Montembeault proved that he can help the Canadiens. Without him, the Habs probably wouldn’t have made it to the spring dance last season… because the Québécois was generally solid in front of the net.He was able to steal games single-handedly, and it showed in the end.But Monty has been struggling since the start of the campaign. He’s not the dominant goaltender we saw at times in 24-25, and it’s showing in his numbers. Of all the goaltenders who have played at least three games this season, Montembeault ranks 33rd (out of 36) in efficiency at .857. But there’s more to it than that too… Because Monty is one of the worst in terms of saves above expected with his -4.4 rating:

[content-ads] In four games so far this season, Montembeault has won twice – and allowed 13 goals.

But it’s a good thing his forward was there to save him in the 5-4 win over the Kraken: if the Canadiens hadn’t scored five goals, they’d never have won that game.Never. We know the pressure’s on the Québécois goalie. He’s got a good club ahead of him, expectations are no longer the same in Montreal… and there’s also the fact that he’s got the next Olympics to think about. He’s got a chance to make the club, and maybe that’s playing on his mind too. Should we automatically press the panic button? Not necessarily, no. Monty has already proven himself, after all, and he’s capable of bouncing back. On the other hand, he’ll have to get back on his feet to better help the Canadiens and his bid for the next Olympics. He’s the Habs’ #1 goaltender and he deserves to play tomorrow against the Sabres in that context… but on the other hand, Jakub Dobes seems ready to take on more because he’s been excellent not only since the start of the season, but also since the start of practice camp.So it’s up to Sam to step up. And yes, I have confidence in him for tomorrow’s game against a club like the Sabres. He’s got to pull out a big one, though… [spacer title=’Overtime’] – He’s off to a good start.

Matvei Michkov: benched for the third time in five games this season

Matvei Michkov is a good hockey player. You don’t score 27 goals and add 37 assists in your first season in the National Hockey League if you don’t have the talent to succeed. ButMatvei Michkov also has a reputation as a guy who doesn’t always give his all on the ice. We saw it last night… when he made a simply atrocious retreat into his own territory. The result? The Wild scored, and Michkov wasn’t even in his zone yet.

The result was that Rick Tocchet, the Flyers’ new coach, was… fed up again. Because, in reality, Michkov was once again benched by his head coach. He missed time in the third period and didn’t see a single second of action in overtime either. It’s already the third time this season that Tocchet has treated him this way. And… for context, the Flyers have played a grand total of five games since the start of the campaign.Yikes

[content-ads] The best players on a team have to be able to lead by example. They can’t look like they c****** on the ice and they can’t show their teammates that they look like they want to be somewhere else. That said, these things are learned over time, sometimes. Matvei Michkov is only 20 years old: he’s young and perhaps doesn’t fully realize how much of an influence he can have on his team’s outcome in the defensive zone. He will have to learn, however, to become more committed on the ice. Rick Tocchet is trying to send him that message right now, and it was the same with John Tortorella on a few occasions last season. But that message has to get through, too. And clearly, it doesn’t seem to be working right now…[spacer title=’Overtime’] – He’s on fire.

– Great news. We’

– Come on!

– Great game.
