“Maison”: Lane Hutson looks (really) happy to be in Montreal to stay

Lane Hutson has signed a long-term contract with the Canadiens. The defenseman, who is in the final year of his NHL entry-level contract, has signed an eight-year pact that will expire in 2034.Hutson is in town to stay… even if that was never really in doubt. And clearly, you can sense that the defenseman is really, really happy that it’s settled. He got a dose of love from his teammates at practice, and it made his coach happy. And Hutson, in the final minutes, used his Instagram account to highlight the good news: he posted a montage of his highlights (but also of the club and its fans in general), and simply put a house emoji. It says a lot about how happy he is to be in town to stay

[content-ads]You can tell that for Hutson, home is Montreal… and he’s happy to be there for the next nine years. After all, his contract won’t expire until he’s 30, which means he’ll be spending his entire twenties in the city.Unless there’s a deal in the meantime, of course… but we agree that’s a long way off.Lane’s little brother, Cole Hutson, also highlighted his brother’s new contract… but he also took the opportunity to give Ivan Demidov some love in the process.

In reality,Zachary Bolduc is likely to get a new contract before Demidov, given that the Québécois will need a pact for the next campaign, which is not the case for Demidov. But we also know that the young Russian will sooner or later follow Hutson’s lead and go for his big contract, and once he does, the club will really have almost its entire core under long-term contract. The only ones left will be Jacob Fowler, Michael Hage and David Reinbacher… but that won’t be for a few years yet.[spacer title=’Overtime’]- Great news for the Québécois… but also for my colleague Charles-Alexis Legault Brisebois, hehe.

– Enjoy.

“I like it almost more than a win”: St-Louis loved seeing his players congratulate Hutson

I was at the Canadiens’ practice this morning in Brossard, and after practice, a special moment happened on the ice: all the players jumped on Lane Hutson to congratulate him on his new contract. It madefor great pictures. And it proves just how tight-knit the guys are:

Martin St-Louis told Lane Hutson to go around the rink to share the news with his players. Because no, the guys weren’t aware of the situation before and during practice. The CH pilot didn’t want to talk about it because he wanted the team to be focused for practice. Obviously, the guys were happy for Hutson when they heard the news. St-Louis came back to that moment after practice and said he loved the way his players reacted. That sentence speaks for itself, after all:

I’m not surprised by the way the players reacted, and I like it almost more than a win. I think Lane was happy to go out for a spin, he likes to skate.

Martin St-Louis

The culture of the Habs has changed, and right now you can see how much fun everyone has in the organization. The guys get on the ice 30 minutes before practice because they like spending time together, they’re there for each other when there’s news like Hutson’s contract.it helps when there’s a nice environment within a team.

It’s also sure to be one less distraction around the club. The guys will never say it.and now that all that’s settled, it’s time to get down to business! [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Oh…

– What do we think?

– Wow.

VIDEO: A first goal for Heineman in New York and for Harris in Boston

Emil Heineman and Jonathan Drouin once played for the Canadiens, and now they’re on the same team on Long Island. What’s even better? They’re playing on the same line… and they did some good talking today. The Swede scored his first goal in an Isles uniform, following a fine pass from the Québécois:

What a shot, honestly. We know Emil Heineman has a quality shot and he really showed it today. It takes talent to shoot like that… and you can see from the velocity of the puck that it was a really powerful shot.A great goal for the former Habs player… and Drouin did well on the sequence too, finding Heineman, who was able to take advantage afterwards [content-ads]

While we’re on the subject of Habs alumni…

After spending a season in Columbus, Jordan Harris is back in his hometown. He signed a one-year contract with the Bruins in the off-season and made the club after a good practice camp. And today, he scored his first goal in the black and youthful Bruins uniform:

On the footage, you can see how happy he is. It shows in his celebration, after all, because you can see him jumping on the bay window with a lot of emotion. And it’s got to be special, scoring for your childhood team… The pity of it all? Heineman and Harris scored their first goal for their new team in a losing cause. The Islanders lost 5-2 to the Winnipeg Jets (Jonathan Toews picked up his first point since April 13, 2023 in his team’s win) and the Bruins lost 4-3 to the Lightning. At least Heineman and Harris had a chance to stand out… [spacer title=’Overtime’] – A nice welcome for Jacques Martin.

– I love it.

– Yikes.

– Indeed.

– Hehe.

Lane Hutson’s message to Kent Hughes: The Habs are close to the Stanley Cup

Lane Hutson wants to play in Montreal, which explains why he’s agreed to terms with the Habs onan eight-year contract extension that will pay him $8.85 million per season. That’s really the big news in town today, and it’

Hutson and Kent Hughes held talks over the weekend to come to a deal. The two sides have found common ground and everyone is happy(including Nick Suzuki) to know that the file is finally settled . That said, Hutson wanted to send a message to his GM during the negotiations that took place over the last few days, and it’s an interesting one. In the American’s eyes, the Habs aren’t far from having the resources to win one – and several – Stanley Cups in the next few years, andhe knows that the good times are coming to Montreal.

[content-ads] To see him sign such a contract is great news. And it must be encouraging too after being ignored by the American team this summer. Reminder: the defenseman wasn’t invited to the U.S. Olympic orientation camp, and it’s safe to say he was disappointed…That said, Lane plans to celebrate this news in a rather simple way… by playing tomorrow night at the opening game in Montreal:

Hutson sees the core getting better every year and understands that the Canadiens are likely to be really good for a long time. And it’s clear that played a part in his decision to sign an eight-year contract. He wouldn’t have done it if he didn’t believe in the team… and he wouldn’t have accepted less money either in that context. All’s well that ends well, then. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Good point.

– This is important.

– Well done.

– Hehe.

Lane Hutson offered more money (but agreed to take less)

Lane Hutson is a guy who likes to win. He wanted to sign a big contract in Montreal because he sees himself lifting the Stanley Cup with the Canadiens. And to do that, he decided to take less money when he signed his new contract.

offered

Lane Hutson could’ve gone for the big money. He could’ve told Kent Hughes that he wanted as much money as possible to secure his future financially and he could’ve been greedy in his demands. But that didn’t happen and the culture in Montreal is one of the reasons why. When you see guys like Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky doing the same, it also helps… [content-ads] In the end, it will give Kent Hughes more room to maneuver.

The Canadiens’ GM will have more money to improve his team, and by seeing Hutson take less money, it also sends a message to the rest of the group: we’re not here to fool around. That’s the right attitude, and it also shows how much Hutson is a guy who takes his team’s success to heart. I’ll repeat the first sentence of my text: he likes to win. And he went out of his way to help the club at that level because he knew he could get more money. Good for the Habs, honestly.

It could also dictate what happens next for guys like Zachary Bolduc and Ivan Demidov, who will have to sign a new contract at some point. That said, Hutson isn’t the first to accept less money in order to stay in town. And he probably won’t be the last either… [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Me too.

– Oh yeah?

– I love it.

– Oh.

Nick Suzuki is pleased with the contract signed by Lane Hutson

Does Lane Hutson at $8.85 million a year sound like a bargain to you? I guess so.Of course, if the Canadiens ever have a good season, you have to wonder if Kent Hughes will have a chance of winning GM of the Year, and he’s the one we’ll have to sign for the long term one day, as Maxim Lapierre put it.

Seeing the negotiations come out on social networks affected the case, but Kent Hughes managed to get the defenseman at his price. It just complicated things, and no doubt delayed the matter, considering Hughes wanted the contract signed before the start of the season. It’s just a week too late.

[content-ads]Finally, at $8.85M, Hutson earns more per year than Suzuki. That said, if we get out our calculator, we realize that in the first year of Suzuki’s contract and in the first year of Hutson’s contract, the captain has an advantage. What is it? In 2022-2023, Suzuki’s contract ($7.875 million, signed by Marc Bergevin) represented 9.5% of the salary cap. And in 2026-2027, with an estimated cap hit of $104 million, Hutson will represent 8.5% of the cap. Suzuki may earn less than Hutson per year for years to come, but taking into account the cap and the percentage at the time of signing (a technique often used in modern NHL negotiations), the captain is above the American defenseman. Using the same logic, Cole Caufield (9.4% in 2023-2024) is also above Hutson. However, this season, Juraj Slafkovsky is below Hutson: the Slovak is at 7.9%. But in the end, even if he didn’t necessarily have a say in the negotiations, Nick Suzuki is happy to see that Hutson took a discount to stay in town and help the club win.

Kent Hughes, for his part, isn’t ready to say whether his defenseman took a discount or not. In his eyes, the market has been hard to read for the past few months, but hey: Hughes has to run his club and make it work. And clearly, on this one, he succeeded. spacer title=’Overtime’]- The guys are happy for Lane Hutson.

– Well.

– Interesting.

The vast majority of Lane Hutson’s contract in bonuses | A small no-trade clause

It’s done: Lane Hutson is in Montreal to stay. On this Thanksgiving Day, the American defenseman saw the Habs make official an eight-year contract at $8.85 million per season. The contract will take effect next summer, and clearly, fans will be cheering him on tomorrow. #Toconvince the defenseman to sign at his price, Kent Hughes worked hard. First, he tried to sign him to a deferred-money contract, but the kid wouldn’t go for it. Or his father didn’t? Or his agents didn’t?

But what made the difference was that the Canadiens agreed to give the American the vast majority of the contract ($55M out of $70.8M) in signing bonuses.

As Eric Engels says, his base salary will very often be a million dollars (or a little more) a year. This is increasingly common – and will be limited in the next collective agreement.

[content-ads]Note that in Year 6 of his contract, i.e. when he would have obtained full autonomy, a partial no-trade clause (10 clubs where he can refuse to be traded) comes into play. Eric Engels also reported this. Note that according to Pierre LeBrun, it was really at the end of the week that the file really picked up speed. From Saturday to Sunday, there was progress in negotiations. And that led to the contract.

[spacer title=’en rafale’]- Practice: everyone has arrived ahead of time and the extras are lined up to stay the same.

– Must read.

– Absolutely.

Lane Hutson signs an eight-year contract for less than $9 million a year

Lane Hutson and the Montreal Canadiens have agreed on the terms of an eight-year contract valued at $8.85 million per campaign. The $70.8M contract will begin in 2026. It’s done.

It always made sense to have Lane Hutson sign under Noah Dobson ($9.5M per year) because he wasn’t exactly close to full autonomy. But under the $9M mark, that’s a nice touch. Once again, even though it was choppy for a bit, Kent Hughes was patient and he got his prize. To have the Calder winner at less than $9M a year for the long term is a great coup, so the kid can concentrate on hockey. content-ads]Behind Carey Price (10.5), Noah Dobson (9.5) and P.K. Subban (9.0), Hutson has just signed the fourth-biggest contract in franchise history. No forwards in the bunch, by the way.Details to follow…

Zachary Bolduc contract negotiations: “I don’t think it’s started at all”

Let’s take a look at the Canadiens’ salary situation for next season by looking at the guys who are at the end of their contracts within the organization. In 2026-2027, many contracts will be up for renewal. Among the unrestricted free agents, the files of Patrik Laine, Mike Matheson, Kaapo Kahkonen, Alex Belzile, Marc Del Gaizo and Nate Clurman are worth keeping an eye on, butnot at the same level. Matheson and Clurman won’t get as much attention, of course, but many players will also be restricted free agents. Sean Farrell, Joshua Roy, Riley Kidney, Jared Davidson, Luke Tuch, William Trudeau and Gannon Laroque are among them, but Kirby Dach, Joe Veleno, Zachary Bolduc, Arber Xhekaj and Lane Hutson are the names to watch out for in the NHL. There’s a lot of talk about Lane Hutson, but increasingly, Bolduc is reminding us that he, too, could earn himself a nice contract for next season. His start to the season is helping him, anyway

[content-ads]Obviously, it’s still very early to get into the details of a new contract for Bolduc. After all, we’ll have to give him time to see if he’ll be able to maintain a good cruising pace over the long term. But if we could talk about a potential contract this summer, we can still do so once the season begins. Accordingto Renaud Lavoie, it would be very surprising if Pat Brisson started negotiating with Kent Hughes, who has his hands full with a small defenseman at the moment. He spoke about it on BPM Sports this morning, saying he doesn’t think it’s started at all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eepqYeZggI But it will. But why? Becausea guy who can score goals like Bolduc is capable of doing, that pays off in an NHL organization. And the player’s clan knows that. [spacer title=’en rafale’]- Note to interested parties.– Arber Xhekaj is good in his role. [BPM Sports] – Interesting.

Patrik Laine’s wife anxious about the couple’s future in Montreal

Being a hockey player’s wife can’t be easy. After all, you never know when your husband might be traded. You never know if your husband’s club might simply decide not to offer him a new contract. With kids or not, that brings uncertainty to a couple. And right now, that’s the case for Patrik Laine’s wife, Jordan. In response to a question about how she feels on the heels of the final year of the Canadiens’ #92 contract, she replied that she feels anxious all the time.

Honestly, I feel anxious all the time because it’s obviously a major event in my life that’s totally out of my control.

Jordan Laine

[content-ads]She asserts, however, that everything in life happens for a reason, and that what must happen will happen. She’s also very proud of Patrik for the mentality he’s adopting right now and for his efforts, but despite everything, she’s at the mercy of what’s going to happen. Patrik Laine has made no secret of the fact that he wants to sign a contract extension to stay with the Canadiens beyond the 2025-2026 season.

We don’t know how far the Habs are willing to negotiate with him(it was in the plans at some point this summer, but we don’t know if it actually happened), considering he’s not off to a great start this season.

In fact, we suspect that the Habs can’t be in a hurry to talk to Laine. The Habs are having trouble finding a role for him right now – as expected – and he’ll have to learn to be more than just a powerplay specialist if he hopes to stay in town. But we don’t know if we really believe that… [spacer title=’en rafale’]- The Blue Jays lost last night.– Does Pat Brisson want to be a GM?[JdeM] – À lire.

– Why not start the ceremony two minutes earlier?

– The Habs will practice at 10:30
