Vinzenz Rohrer: “I didn’t expect to be cut back so soon”

If there’s one young prospect we really didn’t expect to see at the Montreal Canadiens’ latest practice camp, it was Vinzenz Rohrer. Having been drafted in the third round (75ᵉ overall) in 2022, Rohrer was never a name that stood out in the Habs’ prospect rankings, especially since he’s been developing in Switzerland with Zurich.

Despite all this, Rohrer arrived in Montreal for his first NHL training camp with great confidence, and left a very good impression. Indeed, the 21-year-old Austrian looked very good throughout the camp, which really put his name in the spotlight, even going so far as to talk about him as a candidate to start the season in Montreal. In the end, Rohrer was sent back to Switzerland a week before the end of the camp, which surprised many.

The Austrian himself said he hadn’t expected to be cut so soon.

[content-ads] This is what Rohrer explained in an interview with Maximilian Girschele of the LAOLA1 website.

The Habs prospect said he would have liked to stay longer in Montreal to gain more experience, but that in the end, he wasn’t too sad to return to Switzerland. Rohrer really would have thought he’d stay longer with the Habs during practice camp, especially considering he stood out, but the Austrian understood the reasons for his swift return to Switzerland:

“They told me I had a good camp and left a good impression, but they want to see me progress further. There’s no hurry, I’ve only just turned 21.”

Vinzenz Rohrer

Understandably, the Canadiens see Rohrer as a long-term plan, and therefore prefer to see him play a third season in the Swiss professional league, before bringing him to North America, either with the Habs or the AHL’s Laval Rocket.

The Austrian just turned 21 on September 9, so he remains an interesting prospect for the Habs, as he’s an energetic player, quite comparable to Brendan Gallagher. We could see Rohrer taking Gally’s place one day, when the latter reaches the end of his contract,so it’s an interesting case to follow, as so far Rohrer hasn’t scored a point in four games since joining the Zurich Lions.

Lane Hutson deal imminent: Elliotte Friedman doesn’t believe in it

The hot topic right now with the Montreal Canadiens is certainly star defenseman Lane Hutson’s next contract. Everyone is anxiously awaiting the Habs’ #48 to sign his next contract, because we’re all anxious to learn that Hutson will be a Canadiens player for a long time to come (if he signs long-term, of course).

We’ve been on the edge of our seats since yesterday, when Jonathan Bernier claimed that a deal was imminent between Hutson and the Habs. It’s big news, but in the end, it may just be a false rumour.

Why do I say that? Because the NHL’s most trusted and connected tipster, Elliotte Friedman, has said he doesn’t believe it.

[content-ads] Indeed, that’s what Friedman said on the latest episode of The FAN Hockey Show podcast.

The renowned tipster didn’t elaborate on the subject, but he was clear in explaining that from what he hears, there’s nothing imminent in the Hutson case. However, Friedman recalled the Mason McTavish file, when nothing was imminent, on the contrary, and finally, a phone call changed everything.

So, a new contract for Hutson could also fall through at any second, but for now, if the most reliable person in the hockey world is to be trusted, there’s nothing imminent.

The sooner Hutson signs, the sooner he’ll be ableto concentrate on playing hockey and doing what he does best: flying on the ice.

Lane Hutson contract: her father’s involvement complicates negotiations

After just two games into the new 2025-2026 season, 13 Montreal Canadiens players have already registered at least one point, leaving just five players who have been blanked from the scoresheet so far – Josh Anderson, Jake Evans, Patrik Laine, Kaiden Guhle and Lane Hutson. Yes, you read that correctly – surprisingly, Hutson has yet to register a point this season.

While there’s nothing to worry about, given that he’s playing good hockey despite a few mistakes, one has to wonder if Hutson’s contract negotiations are playing in his head.Last I heard, the Habs’ #48 would have liked to have his contract extension signed before the start of the regular season, but lo and behold, nothing is completed after two games.

Negotiations are more complicated than expected between the Hutson clan and Kent Hughes, with several factors at play. And one of those factors is the involvement of Hutson’s father.

[content-ads] Indeed, as tipster Chris Johnston stated on his latest episode of The Chris Johnston Show, Rob Hutson is very involved in contract negotiations, as he wants to make sure his son signs the best possible contract for his career.

A father wants the best for his son, and clearly, Rob Hutson doesn’t let his son flinch at the Canadiens’ demands, which adds tension to the negotiations.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that Hutson has a father who is very involved in his career, as we saw when he said that his son could very well play for Canada at international level[content-ads] Now, still according to Chris Johnston, the Hutson clan would like to obtain a six-season contract extension, while the Habs would like to sign their young jewel for eight years.

The two sides have yet to come to an agreement, but the latest news is that a very constructive meeting took place between Hughes and Hutson’s representatives recently, with journalist Jonathan Bernier saying that a deal was imminent. In short, let’s hope that this matter is settled as quickly as possible, so that Hutson can move on with his life and focus on his season.

Michael Hage is on fire: he scores two more goals tonight

It’s Friday night, so it’s the night when many of the Habs’ prospects are in action in the AHL and NCAA, as is the case with Michael Hage, who is off to a great start to the season so far with seven points, including two goals, in just two games with the University of Michigan.

Well, the player picked up where he left off with another solid two-goal performance tonight. His first goal came early in the first period with less than two minutes to go when Hage, after receiving a beautiful pass from Nick Moldenhauer on the zone entry, deftly foiled the opposing goalie with a beautiful deke. Tyler Duke also picked up an assist on the play.

Then, the Habs prospect did it again in the second period when he made himself look like Patrik Laine by unleashing a quick shot near the face-off circle to score on the power play.

[content-ads] Hage also had five shots in the game as the Wolverines defeated the Providence College Friars 5-1. This was already Hage’s eighth and ninth points in just three games this season.

That’s already more than a quarter of his rookie-season output, when he scored 34 points, including 13 goals, in 33 games. And for those wondering, the NCAA single-season points record belongs to Tony Hrkac, who scored 116 points in 48 games.

For his part, LJ Mooney also had a good night, earning an assist on Brodie Ziemer’s goal in addition to scoring in the shootout.

So far, the diminutive forward has one goal and two assists in four games with the University of Minnesota.[spacer title=’Overtime’] – Interesting.

Loss to the Habs: Todd McLellan picks up the Red Wings

Yesterday, the Canadiens won 5-1 against the Red Wings, who were playing their opening game of the 100th anniversary celebrations. With the exception of the first five minutes, the Wings didn’t really look the part last night as they struggled to keep up with the Habs.

Coach Todd McLellan didn’t take kindly to this performance, criticizing his players in his post-game comments:

👀

According to him, his club didn’t play to win the game and didn’t give themselves a chance. McLellan really didn’t like his players’ preparation and their effort on defense having allowed too many overhits to the Canadiens.

Entering his first season with the Red Wings after replacing Derek Lalonde last December, is McLellan already feeling the pressure to win? The problem in Detroit is that fans are getting really impatient after nine seasons of not making the playoffs.

[content-ads] It’s all the more difficult given that the club has been part of the spring ball for 25 consecutive years, winning the Stanley Cup four times.

Detroit fans are used to better things, and Steve Yzerman’s rebuilding plan, the Yzerplan, is taking a long time to produce results, while the Red Wings have been in the mix for the last 4-5 years, knocking on the playoff door but not making it. We’ve been going around in circles for a few years now. Yesterday, to be honest, I thought the Red Wings played soulless hockey, an empty performance. Nights like that can happen in a season, but when it’s in your season opener and at home, it can indeed be worrying. And if the results aren’t there this season and Detroit were to miss the playoffs for a tenth year in a row (the second-longest drought in the NHL after the Sabres), we could well see a major housecleaning in the organization.

Zachary Bolduc: we can already look forward to a 30-goal season

Two games don’t make a season, but Zachary Bolduc is off to a great start with the Habs.

The forward has already scored two goals, has a good physical presence in front of the opposition’s net and complements Brendan Gallagher very well(who, this morning, was the NHL’s leading even-strength scorer). Anthony Marcotte discussed Bolduc on BPM sports and believes not only that the Québécois will have a long NHL career, but that he could eventually score 30 goals in his career.

Personally, I think Bolduc could score 30 goals as early as this season. hot take? Maybe, but let’s not forget that he scored 13 goals in the last 24 regular-season games in St. Louis after Jim Montgomery took over the bench. Over 82 games, that’s a 44-goal season. And since Bolduc is used on the first wave of the powerplay, I think he’ll be able to pick up some of the production that Patrik Laine had last year.

What’s more, if he continues to perform well on the team’s second line, he’ll get some quality playing time, which should help his offensive production, so I think a 30-goal season is possible for the Québécois forward this season.

What’s certain is that his start to the season will help fans forget the loss of Logan Mailloux, who had a difficult first game with his new team.

[content-ads] If Bolduc continues to fill the net regularly, he could quickly become a crowd favorite, as George Laraque tells BPM Sports.

Not to mention we haven’t seen him hand out any good checking yet. What s more, Bolduc understands the realities and peculiarities of a market like Montreal, and as Anthony Martineau explains to The Sick Podcast, the 22-year-old forward has the mentality to deal with the pressure of such a market.

Anyway, here’s hoping he can keep the momentum going for a while [spacer title= En rafale’] – That’s not bad!

“I’d give Mike Matheson the same contract as Jake Walman”

Mike Matheson has been the subject of countless trade rumors in recent months. The defenseman, who is in the final year of his contract, will have one last opportunity to break the bank next summer… but in Montreal, it would be hard to justify such a big contract. The club already has big contracts on the blue line (Noah Dobson and Kaiden Guhle), and Lane Hutson has yet to sign. And while there are plenty of good young defensemen in town, Matheson is playing some great hockey right now. The pair he forms with Noah Dobson is off to a great start, and it’s hard to imagine trading him to a team with playoff aspirations this season.

So all of a sudden, the idea of him signing a contract extension is starting to become popular again. And on Tony Marinaro’s Sick Podcast, Éric Bélanger said he’d be willing to give Matheson the same contract Jake Walman signed in Edmonton. We’re talking a pact worth $7 million a year… for seven years.

[content-ads]Such a contract would see Matheson under contract until the age of 39… and that’s kind of the problem with that idea: it would be a very, very long time. From the standpoint that the Habs already have a lot of resources invested in their blue line, it’s hard to justify such a contract, no matter how good Matheson is.But on the other hand, if he reaches the free-agent market, you have to expect that at least one team will be willing to give him such a contract. Vladislav Gavrikov received such a contract last summer with the Rangers, for example: a big top-4 defenseman on the independent market is worth his weight in gold.Considering that Matheson loves playing in Montreal and doesn’t want to leave, it’s debatable whether he’d accept a little less (whether in money or in years). But one thing is clear: if Kent Hughes wants to keep him, he’ll have to be prepared to pay… possibly for many years to come.I have a feeling we’ll be talking more and more about this issue once Lane Hutson’s case is settled.Speaking of the wolf,

– We’ll be watching this!

– Let’s hope it lasts, now.

Avalanche unveils first images of Nordiques uniform

This summer, we learned that the Avalanche would be unveiling a new uniform for the 2025-26 season. The club would retain its usual uniforms, but would add an alternative uniform to its wardrobe. And we were talking about a retro Nordiques uniform.in the past, the club has worn a uniform similar to that of theNordiques, but in the colors of the Avalanche. That was as part of the Reverse Retro series, but this time the club wanted a Nordiques uniform… in Nordiques colors. And today we finally got our first look at the uniform in question. We can’t see it in its entirety, but we can see some of the elements that make it up.And we can very clearly see the Nordiques logo, as well as the team’s famous blue.

[content-ads]We still don’t know when it’ll happen, but we expect to see the uniform used in real games this season. No, they won’t just be used for practice, obviously, and inevitably, then, we have to wonder whether the club will want to use them when they face the Canadiens. We know that the Habs will be in Colorado on November 29, while the Avalanche will be in Montreal on January 29, so itssafe to assume that they’ll be worn at home (that’s often the case with special uniforms of this kind), so I have a feeling we’ll have to keep an eye on the November 29 date.I’m also anxious to see how the uniforms will be received by the public. When you read the comments under the Avalanche’s post, you get the feeling that a lot of people are a little uneasy about the whole thing.Especially since this year, the Avalanche are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their team… and therefore of the Nordiques’ move…

Sharks owner wants nothing to do with Gavin McKenna

Do you know Hasso Plattner? We’re talking about the owner of the San Jose Sharks… who, however, is used to staying well away from cameras and public statements.Yes, that’s quite normal if you don’t know him. But that’s about to change.Quite unexpectedly, Plattner gave an interview to local media in San Jose. As Sheng Peng(San Jose Hockey Now) reports, Plattner talked about a number of topics, including Gavin McKenna… and clearly, he really, really doesn’t want to select the top prospect in the upcoming draft:

I told Mike [Grier, Sharks GM], I don’t want [Gavin] McKenna here!

Hasso Plattner

[content-ads]Plattner explains that he feels his club already has enough talented youngsters and seems keen to see his team take a step forward this year. He doesn’t see his club making the playoffs, that said… but he doesn’t seem to want to end up in the cellar for all that (and we can think of the fact that he wants to start seeing people in the stands again). But obviously, Plattner wanted to bring out the bad guy. He also took advantage of his interview to put quite a few people through the wringer. Whether it was Erik Karlsson (who wasn’t a good team player), Thomas Bordeleau (who is a bust in his eyes), Timo Meier (who was a good riddance given that he’s not a player you build your team around) or Doug Wilson Jr. (who was paid too much to draft poorly), the club owner didn’t hold back.

Clearly, then, Plattner had a field day with the media. But despite it all, he’s optimistic about what’s being built in his organization, and the now-retired Plattner intends to be around San Jose more often.Spacer title=’Overtime’]As long as it works!

– Indeed.

Canadiens: RDS announces it will remain the official French-language broadcaster for several years

Next year, there will be 84 games per club in the NHL. But for the Canadiens, it was still unclear how many games would be on which channel, and now the answer is in: RDS has announced that it will remain the official French-language broadcaster for the next several years. And 45 Canadiens games will be on RDS – instead of 60.

TSN, on the other hand, will have 50 Habs games. Why the five-game difference? The question arises, but it’s safe to assume that some of these duels will end up on a broadcast platform. Why? Because Geoff Molson has said that “the vast majority” of games should be broadcast on cable. Does this mean that the five games of difference could be on a platform? Maybe. We don’t know. [content-ads]Let’s remember that 39 other games, at least 34 of which are national rights games, are still on the market. Will TVA Sports and/or Amazon get them? We’ll see.

Several weeks ago, our colleague Félix Forget talked about this drop in RDS games. It remains to be seen whether everyone involved in broadcasting Canadiens games on RDS will also be back in 2026-2027. spacer title=’Overtime’]- One game for Jonathan Drouin.
