Ilya Samsonov yanked after allowing six goals in Game 1

Ilya Samsonov earned the starter’s role for the Toronto Maple Leafs between the pipes to start their crucial first round postseason series against the Tampa Bay Lightning. And unfortunately for him and the rest of the team, the first game didn’t go remotely according to plan.

The Lightning jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals from Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Anthony Cirelli and Nikita Kucherov. While the Leafs were able to battle back with a pair of power play goals in the second period to cut the deficit to one, postseason assassin Brayden Point would tally twice while veteran Corey Perry scoring one of his own, making it sox goals on the scoreboard for the visiting Bolts.

That would be it for Samsonov, as he was pulled after the second period in favor of Joseph Woll. He would finish the night having allowed six goals on 29 shots against by the Lightning.

Red Wings’ Robby Fabbri delivers crucial health update

The Detroit Red Wings lost forward Robby Fabbri last month during a game against the Chicago Blackhawks to what was clearly a lower body injury; that was especially concerning given the fact that Fabbri has suffered a torn ACL at multiple points during his career. In fact, he missed the first half of this season while recovering from offseason surgery to correct the torn ACL he suffered nearly a year ago.

It wouldn’t be long afterward that the team would announce that Fabbri would be finished for the remainder of the regular season. The organization and fan base are certainly hoping that Fabbri will be healthy enough to start next season.

The good news is that according to Fabbri himself, that shouldn’t be a problem at all.

“For sure, ready for Day 1 in camp,” Fabbri said. “This is a little quicker rehab for sure.

“I’m back training right now. We’re just slowly ramping everything up. Obviously, there’s no rush in the rehab process right now with having the summer here but we’re slowly ramping it up in the gym, doing everything – upper body, lower body, biking – and the knee’s feeling good, so we’re in a good spot.”

Fabbri also explained that if Detroit were in the playoffs, he’d be playing.

“I can definitely tell you if playoffs were starting this week, I’d be playing one way or another.”

In the 28 games that Fabbri played in this season, he lit the lamp seven times along with adding nine assists and 22 PIM. In 330 career NHL games split between the St. Louis Blues and Red Wings, he’s racked up a total of 80 goals with 88 assists.

Originally acquired from the St. Louis Blues in November of 2019 in exchange for checking forward Jacob de la Rose, Fabbri just completed the first season of a three year, $12 million extension he inked to stay with the team.

Dylan Larkin has good news for Red Wings fans

The Detroit Red Wings have completed the fourth year of what they like to refer to as the “Yzerplan”, named for beloved former team captain and current general manager Steve Yzerman. And while the good news is that the team did make progress in the recently completed 2022-23 NHL season, the bad news is that they once again finished outside of the postseason, making it seven straight years of being unable to compete for the Stanley Cup.

For captain Dylan Larkin, who was re-signed to a lengthy eight year contract extension by the team earlier this year, he believes that they’ve set the wheels in motion for a return to postseason play next year.

“There was a lot of new this year, a lot of new players coming in, a lot of us trying to build chemistry, everyone trying to figure each other out, figure out where they are on the team and in the lineup,” Larkin said. “We had injuries to start camp and hopefully next year we won’t be in that position, and we can really push each other and have a great camp and start the year great.”

“We heard a lot now about Steve’s plan and the direction this is going, where this wasn’t really the year and he wanted to make moves for the future,” Larkin said. “It was very difficult after the trade deadline. We took 4-5 guys out of the lineup, had key injuries.

“But there were plenty of times I felt with the younger players and guys we brought in in the summer, this thing is headed in the right direction. As much as you think about next year you think with the young players coming into our lineup, it’s a much better environment for them to succeed. That’s what I’m really excited about.”

Because Detroit will have had a full season of getting used to playing in head coach Derek Lalonde’s system, Larkin believes that they’ll be able to have an even quicker start to the year next season.

“Newsy’s been saying it to us the last couple weeks, we’re going to start on the 50-yard line and we’re going to be familiar with each other, familiar with the system, and I think that’s huge.”

Leafs get boo’ed off the ice following disastrous 1st period

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before…

The Toronto Maple Leafs are struggling in the 1st round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Only this time, they’re struggling nice and early.

Unlike last post-season when the Leafs put up a 5-0 victory in Game 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning, this time around the Leafs are doing things the hard way. They’re down 3-0 to the Lightning through just one period and were officially boo’ed off the ice by hometown fans when the buzzer went after 20 minutes.

Yikes…

Things can only getter better from here on out, right Leafs fans? Right!?!?!?!?!?

Ilya Samsonov admits the truth after brutal Game 1 performance

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov had himself a particularly brutal night in net during last night’s opening game of his team’s Eastern Conference Run 1 postseason series opener against the defending Eastern Conference champion Tampa Bay Lightning.

After allowing six goals through the first 40 minutes of play, Samsonov was yanked from action in favor of Joseph Woll; he would watch the rest of the game from the bench. And he knows that he must be better in Game 2 Thursday night if the Leafs are to have a chance to finally break their lengthy postseason drought.

“I will be better. I played like s**t today,” Samsonov said, per TSN’s Chris Johnston.

The good news is that Samsonov had himself a strong regular season in his first year with the Leafs, posting a record of 27-10-5 with a 2.33 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. The bad news is that the setback dropped his postseason record to a less than spectacular 1-7, with an inflated 3.45 goals-against average and .895 save percentage.

Game 2 between the Maple Leafs and Lightning is tomorrow night from Scotiabank Arena.

Tavares blames the refs for Leafs’ loss in Game 1

We’ve had a bit of everything this evening in Game 1 between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Big goals, big saves, big hits and… surprise, surprise… a cheap shot from Leafs forward Michael Bunting.

Bunting earned himself a major penalty and a game misconduct for this elbow on Lightning defender Erik Cernak when the Leafs were down and out in the 2nd period:

The Lightning would go on to run over the Leafs in a chippy affair, putting 7 goals past them for an easy 7-3 victory.

The Leafs struggled to remain disciplined and took several ill advised penalties, which was honestly to be expected given the fact that Wes McCauley officiated the game. McCauley and Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe have a very long, very personal history that has provided some fireworks on the big stage. Tonight, it resulted in a big loss for the Leafs… or at least that’s the way Leafs captain John Tavares sees it.

After the game Tavares appeared to blame the officiating for the result, saying essentially that the Lightning get the benefit of the doubt over the Leafs from the officials.

Check it out:

Come on, Johnny…

Chris Kreider sets Rangers history in Game 1 win

The New York Rangers put together a true top to bottom dominating performance in Game 1 of their opening round Stanley Cup Playoffs series against their bitter rival New Jersey Devils tonight. By the time that it was all said and done, the Rangers had put four pucks past Devils goaltender Vitek Vanecek en route to a 5-1 victory and 1-0 early series advantage.

And it was a longtime Rangers forward who left his mark not only on tonight’s game, but also etched himself into the team record books. Chris Kreider tallied two goals, giving him a total of 36 in his playoff career. He’s now the leading playoff goal scorer in Rangers franchise history, an incredible accomplishment considering New York’s long history as an Original 6 NHL team. The feat moved him ahead of Rod Gilbert:

As if that weren’t enough, he’s also the all-time Rangers leader in power play goals with 14.

However, Kreider kept the spotlight on goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who made 27 saves in the victory.

“More often than not, he’s our best player,” Kreider said in the dressing room afterward. “He’s making those big saves and making them look easy. Just instills a lot of confidence in your group when he’s playing like that.”

The Rangers and Devils will get back at it in Game 2 of their series on Thursday night from Prudential Center before shifting back to New York’s Madison Square Garden.
