The late stages of Game 1 against the Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers and we’ve got a controversial goalie interference call at TD Garden.
The Bruins appeared to go up 4-1 with just over 3 minutes left against the Panthers but upon review it was clear that Bruins forward Garnett Hathaway smacked the puck out of Panthers goaltender Alex Lyon’s glove and into the net.
Check it out:
No goal. Pretty clear cut to me, but you just know the Bruins faithful won’t be happy about that one.
We’re midway through Game 1 at TD Garden between the Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers the the Bruins faithful is absolutely GIVING IT to Panthers netminder Alex Lyon.
Bruins fans are currently jeering Lyon’s name after this stinker of a goal:
YIKES…
That’s a weak one, indeed.
Lyon is now being serenaded with chants of, “LYOOOON! LYOOOON! LYOOON!
Right now, the Toronto Maple Leafs and general manager Kyle Dubas are preparing to do anything and everything in order to finally break through and win their first postseason series since 2004. Should they fail in that endeavor, there will almost certainly be major changes in the organization, and that could potentially include Dubas losing the gig as Leafs GM that he’s held since 2018.
But is there a bit of a power struggle taking place behind the scenes in Toronto? And could it potentially lead to him joining a bitter division rival, especially if the Leafs were to falter in the postseason yet again?
According to Frank Seravalli of The Daily Faceoff, there’s a rift between Dubas and team president Brendan Shanahan. What’s more, Dubas could depart this summer for the Ottawa Senators if Pierre Dorion is shown the door.
Take a look at what Seravalli had to say during the latest episode of The Daily Faceoff Rundown:
“I think everything is on the table for the Leafs. There’s been a real power struggle there between Kyle Dubas and Brendan Shanahan, and they’ve done a great job of keeping it lower case and lower key. But, who at the end of the day is holding the keys and who has final decision making power? Brendan Shanahan has it and he’s leveraged it on multiple occasions. I think that relationship has been stressed is the best way to say it. How does that play out? If the Leafs win…if they don’t…I mean, the fact that Kyle Dubas doesn’t have a contract would probably indicate to you what might be coming next in that Brendan Shanahan did ask the board for an extension for Kyle and wasn’t granted one last summer. Yeah, who knows/ Everyone has been saying Kyle Dubas and Pittsburgh and I think people draw lines that may or may not be there. I wonder what happens with the Ottawa Senators. Like, I think that could be a team that could be a destination for Kyle Dubas if he ends up leaving.”
“Pierre Dorion was talking this week like he was going to be the guy, but I think there’s a greater than 9 in 10 chances that he’s not.”
This just in, the Toronto Maple Leafs have made an emergency recall from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies this morning, calling up goaltender Erik Kalgren to serve as the team’s 3rd string goalie tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
It’s expected that Kalgren will act as the team’s 3rd man in goal behind Ilya Samsonov and Joseph Woll for the duration of the playoffs. There’s no timeline yet for Matt Murray’s return but… even if he were healthy enough to play, would you want him in goal over Samsonov or Woll? Unlikely…
In case you missed it last night, Dallas Stars forward Joe Pavelski left his team’s Game 1 loss to the Minnesota Wild after suffering an absolutely brutal hit from Wild defenseman Matt Dumba.
Pavelski appeared to be out cold on the ice and then when clearly woozy when coming to…
After the game, Stars head coach Peter DeBoer provided an update on Pavelski’s health stating that Pavelski is “Ok” but isn’t certain for Game 2:

Scary situation in Dallas this evening in the opening game of the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild opening round playoff series with Wild defenseman Matt Dumba absolutely CRUSHING Stars forward Joe Pavelski.
Pavelski admires his pass and gets crushed hard by Dumba.

And more angles of the hit:
Dumba was initially assessed a five minute major penalty, but it was reversed to a minor upon review. The real damage for Pavelski seems to come as a result of smacking his head off the ice.
In case you missed it last night, the Edmonton Oilers just messed themselves in Game 1.
The Oilers dropped a 4-3 OT decision to the Los Angeles Kings last night in the opening game of their first round Stanley Cup Playoff series by first coughing up the lead with 16 seconds to play, then having a game winner called back in OT, then eventually relinquishing the OT winner to Kings forward Alex Iafallo. That’s a long, looooong way of saying the Oilers absolutely blew it in Game 1.
Here was the scene in Edmonton’s Rogers Place last night when Iafallo popped off:
Yikes… that is one unhappy crowd.
In fact, things turned ugly pretty quickly. The moment after Iafallo scored, Oilers fans started littering the ice surface with trash.
Check it out:
Come on now… have some common decency. I get that you’re upset, but behavior like this is so childish. Seriously, either grow up or give you pricey playoff tickets to someone who can conduct themselves properly in a public setting.
The Minnesota Wild have upset the Dallas Stars in the opening game of their first round Stanley Cup Playoffs series, and it’s thanks to a player who appeared as though he would have to leave the game due to injury.
Forward Ryan Hartman, who was seen visibly laboring on the bench during overtime with television commentators expressing doubt as to whether or not he could even return to action, proved them all wrong by burying the game winning goal at 16:20 of double overtime:
Tensions are high in Dallas this evening with the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild currently playing period #5, otherwise known as double overtime, when it looked like things might have been all over.
The Stars had the best opportunity of the night to seal victory but it was snatched away from them thanks to an incredible diving save from Wild rookie Brock Faber.
UPDATE: NHL Player Safety will NOT be handing out supplemental discipline to Minnesota Wild defender Matt Dumba for his hit on Dallas Stars forward Joe Pavelski in Game 1 of the two teams’ opening round playoff series.

According to TSN insider Chris Johnston, the NHL made a change to their rules, allowing the Leafs to call up Kallgren.
Check it out:
So… while we’re making up new rules, can the Bolts get some sort of freebie too?
You know what though, maybe it’ll even out because if you believe in officiating bias, the Leafs will have their backs up against the wall this evening.
Wes McCauley will be calling Game 1 action this evening, which is always interesting but well… there’s a lot more at play happening when McCauley refs a Leafs game than most fans could ever know. For those not in the know, let me lay it out to you in a bit of detail.
First off, trigger warning for any survivors of sexual abuse out there.
Okay, surely we all remember the David Frost and Mike Danton scandal, right? David Frost was a former junior coach turned NHL player agent who was accused of sexually assaulting a number of underage hockey players, including Danton. Frost was acquitted of the charges and Danton was subsequently arrested and convicted for conspiring to murder Frost.
Okay, stay with me…
Danton and Keefe are lifelong friends. The two grew up playing hockey together and were teammates on a junior team coached by Frost when the alleged abuse took place. Fast forward to Danton’s trial and it was Keefe who was on the stand testifying against Frost.
So… how does this all relate back to McCauley and tonight’s game?
Well, Frost and McCauley are brothers-in law and are reportedly very close.
I’m not saying that this is a conflict of interest but… well… maybe that’s exactly what I’m saying.
Remember when Keefe was fined for shouting at McCauley? Yeah, makes sense now doesn’t it?
