Paul Bissonnette recklessly suggests hurting Jake Oettinger

Former NHL player turned analyst Paul Bissonnette drew the ire of hockey fans everywhere for his over the top cheering of the Toronto Maple Leafs earlier this week, with many calling for him to be removed from the air for language that also included profanity and a vulgar phrase.

And now, he’s right back at it again with a truly stunning suggestion for the Minnesota Wild, who find themselves trailing in their Round 1 Stanley Cup Playoffs series against the Dallas Stars. As you may know, the Wild have been stymied by goaltender Jake Oettinger, who is quickly developing a reputation for being a clutch performer in the playoffs. So, what does Bissonnette think the Wild should do?

In his words, “take a run” at him.

Even if his comments were mostly in jest, it really is never a classy thing to suggest, even half seriously, of injuring an opponent in order to gain the upper hand.

Disturbing details emerge from Valeri Nichushkin’s incident as woman was found in danger

The Colorado Avalanche have been without forward Valeri Nichushkin for their last three postseason games against the Seattle Kraken due to, as they put it, “personal reasons”. Nichushkin was designated a late scratch prior to Game 3, and was reported to have gone to the airport and departed Seattle.

He also did not play in Games 4 and 5, and there’s no indication that he’ll be suiting up for tomorrow’s Game 6 when his Avalanche teammates will attempt to avoid being eliminated.

But now, more details have been confirmed surrounding exactly what took place in the incident, which is now being referred to as having been a “police incident” at the team hotel in Seattle.

Per Bennett Durando of The Denver Post on Twitter:

“The @denverpost can report Valeri Nichushkin was involved in a police incident at #Avs team hotel in Seattle, resulting in a woman who was found intoxicated in his room being transported to hospital for medical treatment. Nichushkin left Seattle that day.

There is no criminal investigation stemming from the incident, authorities told the @denverpost. Nichushkin has been away from the team since, with no timeline to return.

The team has not commented on Nichushkin’s whereabouts, who made the decision for him to leave Seattle that day or whether his absence is being considered disciplinary. Nichushkin is on the first season of an eight-year contract.”

According to team employees, the woman was found in Nichuskin’s room when they went to check on him. The woman, who hasn’t been named, told them that “she should never have come to the United States and that some guy took her passport and that he was a bad person,” according to the incident report.

Nichushkin appeared in 53 games for the defending Stanley Cup champion Avalanche this season, scoring 17 goals while adding 30 assists. He was a force in Colorado’s title run last season, tallying nine goals in 20 playoff games and helping the Avalanche to their first Stanley Cup since 2001.

Jon Cooper annoys Leafs with post Game 5 statement

Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper addressed the media after his team’s 4-2 win over Toronto in Game 5 of their first round series late on Thursday, and once again, he found the right words to get Maple Leafs and their fans going…

While Cooper explained how his players learned from their collapses against Toronto in Games 3 and 4, he added something that the Maple Leafs want nothing to do with : come back to Canada for an ultimate Game 7

“Let’s be honest. This game is so damn fun. You have two teams going at it. There are so many storylines. There are stars here.

Seriously, wouldn’t you guys have pissed off if this ended tonight? Let’s all be back here for Game 7.”

The Leafs, who have failed to advance in the post-season since 2004 and were eliminated by the Lightning in seven games last year. Toronto is now 0-10 since 2018 with a chance to eliminate an opponent.

Before Game 7 mentioned by Cooper who would love to return to Toronto for it, there will be a Game 6 on Saturday in Tampa where the Bolts need to stay alive.

We will see then if the Maple Leafs can improve that record or if Cooper was right about having some more fun in Toronto for Game 7.

Coyotes in full panic mode in latest arena vote update!

Not everyone is acting like NHL commissioner Gary Bettman when it comes to the upcoming public vote on the proposed Tempe Sports and Entertainment District that would keep the Arizona Coyotes in the East Valley city. Bettman has voiced more than once his support for an entertainment complex that would include a 16,000-seat arena and a practice rink.

The Tempe council voted 7-0 on Nov. 10 to allow residents to vote on the project during a special election May 16, if a sufficient number of signatures were generated requesting the referendum. The Coyotes estimate the district would generate $13.1 billion of new spending on site (an average of more than $435 million over 30 years).

But residents aren’t thrilled like Bettman is. According to insider Frank Seravalli, the team is getting so worried that they’re putting in some extra work to the community on their side.

“I’ll give you a little insight into how worried the Arizona Coyotes are about this arena vote that’s coming up that will determine their future: They have sent members of their front office door-to-door canvassing the last couple weeks,” the insider explained on Sportsnet 960.

The Coyotes have played their home games at Mullett Arena on the campus of Arizona State University this season and will continue to do so through the 2024-25 season, with an option for 2025-26.

If the vote doesn’t go through… the Coyotes could be homeless after 2026. Seravalli could see the Coyotes moving as early as next season if the Tempe vote goes bad…

Monster trade aborted between Penguins and Canucks!

The Penguins failed to reach the postseason for the time first in 17 years and that has to be the deciding factor in the new general manager making huge changes in Pittsburgh. Both president of hockey operations Brian Burke and GM Ron Hextall were fired at the end of the regular calendar, and the general manager’s first command will be to save whatever’s left of the roster in order to be a contender with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang putting up great numbers.

A few weeks ago, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman revealed how the Penguins were looking at acquiring Vancouver Canucks forward JT Miller, which would have been a monster trade this season. Miller remained in Vancouver at the trade deadline as it was reported that the Canucks wanted to secure a young centre as a replacement before considering moving him. They were also seeking two first-round picks in return for Miller -– or a first and a prospect. Miller’s 7-year, $56 million contract extension kicks in on July 1.

The Penguins did not want to part with Jason Zucker, and while the deal was too complicated and didn’t get close to materialize, some fans now wonder if the Pens’ new GM, whenever he is named, will revisit the option of a monster trade for Miller’s services.

Zucker is now set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1, and, given how well he did this past season, the veteran forward is likely to fetch a new contract with a higher salary cap hit than the $5.5 million he commanded the last five seasons.

However, the Penguins’ immediate future still revolves around Crosby, Malkin and Letang, and it might mean to pull a monster trade this summer and go all in in 2023-24.

Go big or go home, Pens?

The truth comes out on Connor McDavid and injury reports

Worries surfaced on Thursday after TSN’s Ryan Rishaug tweeted a video that showed Edmonton Oilers captain and superstar forward Connor McDavid favouring his leg at practice and noticeably labouring with what looks to be a lower body ailment.

Frank Seravalli was asked about the Oilers’ captain, who’s put up eight points in the five games played so far in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Los Angeles Kings, and addressed the rumours surrounding McDavid’s health on Oilersnation Everyday with Tyler Yaremchuk.

His update will probably have fans more relaxed ahead of Saturday’s Game 6 in Los Angeles.

“He (Connor McDavid) is not hurt. At least the last time I checked in, a couple of days, to ask that exact same question, “Is there something going on that I am missing” and the answer was no. I do not even have any evidence to point to anything in his game because he is still flying. I do not think anything is wrong with his hand, and obviously not his feet. I think their (LA Kings) game plan is to give the Oilers the perimeter. He (McDavid) can circle the perimeter as much as he wants because they believe he is much less of a threat, and I would say that is a very accurate statement. In many ways, I think what the Kings have done is similar to what the Colorado Avalanche did (in the Western Conference Finals last season).”

Seravalli also believes that if McDavid was hurt, he would not be taking part in practice and would be resting, as head coach Jay Woodcroft and the Oilers would not risk him getting worse in practice.

The Kings have up their game in the playoffs, having proven that they could keep McDavid at bay in the regular season, allowing him to record only three points. Last year in the series, the Kings failed to control McDavid, who put up four goals and 15 points in their seven game set, and now LA is focused on having the upper hand on the Oilers’ captain.

Who is, reportedly, healthy in this first-round series. Edmonton leads 3-2 with a chance to reach the second round on Saturday with a win in Los Angeles.

Jets’ Rick Bowness tears into his own players after playoff elimination

The Jets were ousted from the playoffs in Game 5 by the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday, prompting head coach Rick Bowness to rip his own players apart in a press conference that lasted just one minute after Winnipeg’s 4-1 loss.

“I’m so disappointed and disgusted right now, that’s my thoughts,” Bowness said.

“No pushback. But it’s the same crap we saw in February. It was. As soon as we were challenging for first place and teams were coming after us, we had no pushback. This series we had no pushback. Their better players were so much better than ours, it’s not even close.”

Bowness did not use the excuse of missing star players like Josh Morrissey and Mark Scheifele due to injury.

Instead, he added insult.

“We’ve got to push back. There’s go to be a pushback, there’s got to be pride. You’ve got to be able to push back when things aren’t going your way,” Bowness said.

It is expected to be a busy summer ahead for the Jets and unfortunately for the players, it kicked off with a brutal assessment by their own head coach.

Oilers deal with yet another trade scenario before Game 6

The Edmonton Oilers could put their first round series against the Los Angeles Kings to bed on Friday with a win in Game 6, but it won’t be as easy to end the ongoing trade chatter around the organization.

Amidst their playoff run, the Oilers have been phased with different trade scenarios and a new one emerged on Thursday ahead of Game 6.

According to Allan Mitchell of The Athletic, there is a strong possibility that forward Kailer Yamamoto has played his last game with the Oilers. The reporter believes the winger could be on the move, despite showing issues, “including coverage, a shooting slump and an inability to win battles” during the first round series against the Kings. Which prompted Mitchell to ask one more question to add to the pile of scenarios for this summer:

“Is Yamamoto playing his final games as an Oiler?”

Tough choices will be made in Edmonton. The Oilers will enter the offseason with $6.82-million in cap space, according to Cap Friendly, with RFA’s Evan Bouchard, Ryan Mcleod and Klim Kostin to ink to extensions. They also need to re-sign, or replace, Derek Ryan, Mattias Janmark, Devin Shore and Nick Bjugstad on the roster.

And to be honest, the Oilers have more readily available prospects that could replace Yamamoto.

And so, I would answer yes to Mitchell’s question : Yamamoto is playing his final games as an Oiler.

But first let’s see if tonight’s game shines a new light on him.

Leafs fan next to penalty box in Toronto causes trouble again!

That yellow-hoodie rowdy Maple Leafs from Game 1 of the first round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning was back at it again in Game 5 in Toronto on Thursday.

As Bolts enforcer Pat Maroon sat in the penalty box and there was the yellow hoodie, this time accompanied by an outfit matching friend, to get under his skin.

The fans started causing trouble again, though Maroon did not seem to bother by it this time around. Security walked over to make things didn’t get out of control.

Because we never know when Maroon is involved.

However, the Lightning forward was probably in a good mood, seeing that Tampa was able to hold on to its lead this time and force a Game 6 back in Florida on Saturday.

Can you imagine how many yellow sweaters we could see in Toronto if there has to be a do or die Game 7 in this intense series?!?

Lightning announce status of Erik Cernak for Game 6

The Tampa Bay Lightning have been without the services of Erik Cernak since Game 1 of their Round 1 Stanley Cup Playoffs series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was injured after a dirty elbow to the head from Leafs forward Michael Bunting, who was suspended for the subsequent three games.

And according to head coach Jon Cooper, the Lightning will have to make do without him for tomorrow night’s Game 6 at Amalie Arena.
