Toews can’t “stomach the struggle” of Blackhawks, talks about retirement

With Jonathan Toews on the IR the past month and a half and with Patrick Kane traded to the New York Rangers, the Chicago Blackhawks recently played their first game in 16 years without at least one of the two franchise icons in the lineup.

Indeed, it’s the end of an era in Chicago and it’s apparent to everyone around the NHL. Except to Toews himself, it appears.

Toews was asked last week about potentially retiring as a Blackhawk this summer and, honestly, he gave a pretty insightful answer:

“Regardless of what happens in the future this summer, it’s definitely on my mind that this could be my last few weeks here in Chicago as a Blackhawk.”

– Jonathan Toews

More from the captain:

Now, in a one on one interview with Blackhawks insider Mark Lazerus of The Athletic, Toews has admitted that he’s considering retirement and that if his body doesn’t tell him “Hell yeah!” for next season then the answer will be “Hell no!”

More from Lazerus:

“No idea whether I return to play for the Blackhawks next year, or play for another team, or I decide to move on to other things. I can tell the media wants to ask me about my so-called ‘pending retirement,’ even though I never said those words. But it’ll be a process of just feeling out what I truly feel inspired to do.

“But at this point, I’ve realized there’s no point in continuing to stomach this struggle. So if it’s not a hell yeah, then it’s a hell no.”

“There’s more to life than hockey, so it’s a weighing of my options and what feels right,” he said. “All these years, hockey’s been the One Thing. There hasn’t been much else in my life. And part of me is seeking some balance. So I guess we’ll see.”

– Jonathan Toews

Honestly, who would blame Toews if he walked away from the game this summer?

He’s a three time Stanley Cup champion, a two time Olympic gold medalist and one of the most respected players of his generation. His body is failing him and he has nothing to prove to anyone in the hockey world. Take a bow, Jonny… you’ve done well.

Still, it sounds like he’s still got some fire in him and I wouldn’t be surprised if he does move on to play with another NHL team.

“There’s no doubt I’d love to know what that feels like again, to play hockey on the biggest stage and enjoy the spotlight and have an entire city on your back,” he said. “When you’re going through something real with your teammates, where you’re pushing through a lot and working through things together and figuring out how to reach the peak of the hockey world together. Nothing replaces that. You always kind of long for that experience.”

– Jonathan Toews

What’s the plan, Jonny?

Canadiens issue a statement after one of their players opts out of celebrations tonight

Earlier this week the Toronto Maple Leafs hit the ice at Scotiabank Arena for Pride Night game against the Columbus Blue Jackets wearing rainbow coloured decals on their helmets/masks. All save for goaltender Ilya Samsonov who elected to not wear anything that promotes the LGBTQ+ community.

Incidentally, the Leafs did NOT wear a special Pride themed warmup jersey for the evening, but this wasn’t a change in their protocol as they’ve never worn anything other than their usual warmup jerseys.

Today, the Montreal Canadiens issued a statement after forward Denis Gurianov announced that he also will not partake in the team’s Pride celebrations this evening.

Another day, another silent protest in the NHL…

On Monday, the St. Louis Blues announced that they had changed their plans for Pride Night and had ditched the rainbow-themed warmup jerseys that the team was scheduled to wear. The Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks also elected to drop their own jerseys after concerns that their Russian born players would face legal problems in Russia for “supporting non-normal lifestyles”. The Russian government recently instituted new laws regarding LGBTQ rights and the promotion of what they call “alternative sexualities”. Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Ivan Provorov, San Jose Sharks goalie James Reimer, Eric and Marc Staal of the Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres blue-liner Ilya Lyubushkin and Vancouver Canucks forward Andrei Kuzmenko have all opted out of Pride celebrations citing religious and political reasons.

My thoughts on this matter have been well stated on this website. I believe that the NHL should do away with every ‘special interest’ evening, including Pride Night. That means Military Appreciation Night and Law Enforcement Appreciation night too. These causes, along with LGBTQ+ causes, have become too politicized and are just dripping with drama. To me, hockey is just hockey. Nothing more. I don’t tune into a hockey game or buy tickets so that I can be part of Pride celebrations or to witness the glorification of war. Just drop the puck and let’s smash some teeth already. Anyone else with me? Or am I just out to lunch like usual?

Bruins lose McAvoy in gutsy win over Leafs

In case you missed it earlier this evening, the Boston Bruins completed a gutsy OT comeback win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in a very entertaining game.

The two sides played some tight, physical hockey which gave the game a definite playoff feel. Again, it was a gutsy win for the Bruins but it came at a pretty big cost.

Defenseman Charlie McAvoy left the game in the 2nd period and did NOT return to action. The team announced heading into the 3rd period that McAvoy is out with an upper body injury.

McAvoy collided with teammate Patrice Bergeron in the 2nd period and went hard into the end boards. He came up appearing to favor his right shoulder.

This is obviously a HUGE concern given McAvoy’s injury history and his role on the Bruins’ back-end.

Following the game, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery calmed those concerns though, saying that pulling McAvoy from the lineup was, “just precautionary,” Montgomery said. “We don’t think it’s anything serious.”

Breathe deep, Bruins fans.

Red Wings officially eliminated from postseason contention

Despite two separate two-goal comebacks, the Detroit Red Wings were unable to defeat the Buffalo Sabres for what would have been the first time this season, and in doing so, their already razor-thin postseason hopes were officially dashed.

Their 7-6 shootout loss to the Sabres tonight at Little Caesars Arena combined with the New York Islanders securing two points officially knocked them on the outside looking in on the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. This means that their postseason drought has reached seven seasons following 25 straight trips to the annual dance.

Shane Wright’s career suffers yet another early setback

Shane Wright is an absolutely fascinating hockey player to me.

The 4th overall pick in this past summer’s 2022 NHL Entry Draft was the presumptive #1 overall pick for literally years heading into his draft year. Then he slowly fell to the #2 position following the emergence of Slovakian forward Juraj Slafkovsky. Then at the draft Wright didn’t go 1st, 2nd or 3rd… he went 4th overall to the Seattle Kraken in a pretty shocking draft day development.

Cut to Wright’s first training camp and it looked like he’d be a full-time member with the team given a strong early showing. As the early season unfolded though it was clear that head coach Dave Hakstol had no trust in the rookie and ended up using him very sparingly. Then he got sent to the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds and lit up the league with four goals in five games. Then he got called back up to Seattle where he did absolutely nothing…

Then he captained Team Canada to gold at the 2023 World Junior Championships. Then he officially got demoted back to the OHL for the rest of the season.

Up and down and up and down and up and down.

Well, tonight he’s back down once again.

The OHL’s Windsor Spitfires traded two players and seven draft picks to the Kingston Frontenacs in exchange for Wright… and tonight they blew it in the first round of the playoffs to the #8 seed Kitchener Rangers.

Yikes…

The good news is that he can now re-join the Kraken for the playoffs.

Lighting suffer devastating blow ahead of playoffs

While the Tampa Bay Lightning may not be quite as strong as they have been in the past several seasons that have saw them advance to the Stanley Cup Final three straight times, they’re still the team to beat in the Easter Conference. Simply put – if you want to advance, you have to go through Tampa.

The Lighting are once again gearing up to face the Toronto Maple Leafs in the opening round of the postseason that will get underway later this month, but they were dealt a bit of devastating news as the regular season schedule continues to wind down to a close.

Not only did they fail to take down the New York Islanders in last night’s game (while Toronto secured home ice advantage for their impending matchup), they lost forwards Pat Maroon as well as Tanner Jeannot over the course of the game. The latter was hurt after being taken down along the boards by Islanders forward Scott Mayfield. He was unable to put any weight on his leg and required assistance to be able to make his way off the ice and down to the dressing room; he would be ruled out for the rest of the game.

And needless to say, head coach Jon Cooper was concerned afterward.

As you may remember, the Lighting brought aboard Jeannot from the Nashville Predators in exchange for an absolute haul that included defenseman Cal Foote, a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, and a third-, fourth- and fifth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

If he’s unable to play in Tampa’s opening round series against Toronto, chalk that up as an instant advantage for the Leafs. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for any updates on his condition.

Minnesota Wild get terrible injury update

With the Stanley Cup Playoffs on deck, the Minnesota Wild will be needing all hands on deck if they’re to advance beyond the 2nd round of the annual tournament for the first time in 20 years. And while they got a huge piece of their lineup back today in the form of Kirill Kaprizov, they lost another.

Center Joel Eriksson Ek has been listed as week to week by the team earlier today, a devastating blow with the postseason right around the corner. Additionally, gritty forward Oskar Sundqvist is also out, though he’s listed as day to day:

He suffered the injury after he was struck by a slap shot from Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin during last night’s 4-1 loss at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.

So far this season, Eriksson Ek has tallied a career-best 38 assists and points (61) in 78 games played.

Mitch Marner not happy about Sheldon Keefe’s decision

With the Stanley Cup Playoffs on deck for the Toronto Maple Leafs and their opponent already known, you can bet that head coach Sheldon Keefe is going to do everything possible to make sure that his lineup is fully healthy later this month when perhaps the most critical series in their organization’s recent history finally gets underway.

And to that end, he’s practicing a bit of what has become known as “load management” within the circles of the NBA. And it was forward Mitch Marner who was not in action against the visiting Detroit Red Wings, which would ultimately turn out to the a 5-2 victory for them.

And while Marner appears to understand the decision, it doesn’t mean that he had to like it. Based on his comments, he sure didn’t appear to agree with it.

“It sucks… sometimes we got people in here that do all the stats and all the stuff, that I guess, that’s what they’re paid for and (they) make sure that we’re trying to look at a bigger picture,” Marner said of being sat on Sunday night. “Definitely a tough one, but there’s bigger things.”

Marner was ultimately joined in the press box by teammates Mark Giordano and Jake McCabe, both of whom were also rested for Sunday’s game by Keefe.

With 28 goals and 67 assists, Marner is only five points away from eclipsing the century mark, which would be a career first for him should be be able to accomplish the feat in Toronto’s five remaining regular season games. Meanwhile, he’s only two points away from tying his career high of 97 points that was set last year.

Golden Knights goaltender Robin Lehner being sued for fraud

The Vegas Golden Knights lost goaltender Robin Lehner for the entire 2022-23 season after he underwent hip surgery. His varying health status combined with his inconsistent play in net since coming to Sin City have many questioning why the team acquired him at the 2020 NHL Trade Deadline despite having the beloved veteran Marc-Andre Fleury in net.

Not only did Lehner file for bankruptcy this past December, but now, a new wrinkle has been added to the situation. According to a recently released report, the Golden Knights goaltender has now found himself facing fraud claims from Aliya Growth Fund, a creditor in his bankruptcy case.

Lehner, who listed $5.2 million in assets and $27.3 million in liabilities in his bankruptcy case in December, is also facing fraud claims from American Express on outstanding credit card bills up to $95,000 they say he incurred when he hired a bankruptcy attorney; they also claim that $60,000 of that amount was spent in “tropical fish stores” in both Nevada and Florida.

Per the report via The Athletic

“Aliya’s lawyers wrote that the Lehners solicited and received significant sums of money from AGF “by making materially false and misleading representations.” The alleged untruths concerned the Lehners’ alleged failure to disclose litigation, other loans, the truth about their assets and intent and ability to repay the loan.

Specifically, Aliya listed 24 separate loans, totaling $21 million, that the Lehners allegedly did not disclose in their loan application, as well as 11 different litigation matters (many of which were closed at the time) and unpaid taxes.”

As if that weren’t all, the company owned by Lehner’s family known as Solarcode is being sued for allegedly failing to repay a business loan to the tune of a cool $3.9 million.

And as you may remember, it was Lehner who bought $1.2 million worth of exotic snakes and reptiles from the late reptile breeder Ben Renick in 2017; Lehner allegedly hasn’t completed those payments, leading to further litigation against him.

Former NHLer charged on multiple sexual assault allegations

Last year former NHLer Mike Ribeiro  was arrested and charged in Texas with allegedly sexually assaulting two women in the summer of 2021.

The Dallas Morning News reported that Ribiero was charged with two counts of sexual assault on April 13th, 2022 in Franklin County, Texas.

According to papers filed in court, Ribeiro allegedly assaulted two women on June 23rd, 2021 “using his finger in his assault of one woman and his sexual organ on the other.”

TSN lead investigative reporter Rick Westhead now reports that Ribeiro is facing an additional charge of attempted sexual assault and will have his case heard in August.

From Westhead:

Needless to say, this is a serious criminal offense and Ribeiro is looking at time in prison if convicted.

This, of course, isn’t the first time that Ribeiro has been alleged to have sexually assaulted a woman. In 2012, Ribeiro was sued by his family’s former nanny who alleged that he sexually assaulted her while she was in the care of his own children.
